We had lunch there two days in a row and the meals were consistently good and the best we had in our two days in Taormina. There seems to be a good social media buzz about the place. Let's start with seating. As all the reviews convey, there are no reservations; first come first served and always a line to get in. For lunch, when we arrived at 11:45 for the line, we were able to get an inside seat when they opened at 12 noon. In the second day we arrived at 11:40 and were able to get a prized outside seat. My observation for lunch is that if you arrive between 11:50 and 12:00 you may risk not getting in the first seating and I heard the staff communicate it would be up to an hour or 90 minutes before the second round of seating. For the food, on the first day we ordered bruschetta (a single piece is complimentary on the house but if you want more should order off the appetizer menu): fresh tomatoes, basil, garlic, olive oil. One of the best bruschetta's I have had. We also ordered caponata which had whole garlic cloves and traditional elements; would also recommend. Ordered a bottle of the house white which was solid. We both had the braciola (rolled meat) because my wife had a recipe for it from her grandmother and we wanted to compare; it was a good portion and hearty for lunch. We shared a tiramisu for dessert, very rich and creamy and we like that the lady finger cookies still had a bit of a crunch. Next to us a couple from California had the grilled sardines and tuna which they said they really enjoyed. On the second day, we both ordered spritzes (Aperol and Limoncello) and started with the fried calamari; it had a good taste and was very lightly battered and fried. I was expecting something with a bit more batter and maybe more crunchy but glad we tried it. We also ordered a fennel and orange salad which was the highlight of the lunch - so refreshing and a perfect balance. For entrees, I had the spinach and ricotta ravioli which I would absolutely recommend and my spouse had the pasta with a ragu sauce - equally delicious. We decided to hold on dessert and save room for granita later in the afternoon. While sitting outside, many passers by commented to their companions that "this is the place to eat in Taormina". It was our first night in Taormina and after walking around looking for a restaurant, we were drawn to the music playing from the restaurant front. While perusing their menu outside from a good distance, a man came running to open the door and greet us. It was Gianluca, the owner. After being seated we were met with an enthused speech from Gianluca in which he told us how excited he was to have us there and how passionate he was about serving food to the public that was organic, authentic, and delicious. This was CLEARLY a lie. First, we tried ordering several different bottles of wine on the menu that we were then told were not available. While this was odd, it was only our first problem, so it wasn't too much of an issue. The real issues began when we ended up ordering. Amongst the four of us, 3 ordered pizza and 1 ordered salad. Immediately upon ordering our meals, Gianluca's temperament changed. He asked in an annoyed tone if we would like to get a starter, and we politely declined. It wasn't until we got our food that we reached the point of being appalled. The 3 pizzas were disgusting. They weren't fully cut, they were undercooked, and honestly resembled diarrhea. Additionally, specific key ingredients like basil and oregano that were supposed to be included on my pizza were not included (one single leaf was as you can see in the picture). We were all shocked when the salad that was ordered by one of us came out and was completely inedible, and clearly vegetables from a jar. After receiving our food, we were not checked on once more. For such a personable and attentive owner at the beginning of our meal, it was like a switch was flicked inside of him after we chose not to order any of his "daily specials" or other pricier items on the menu. We were completely ignored. It was not until we asked for the check that anyone came by again. We received the check and immediately paid it in Euros. We waited on our 13 Euros in change for about 10 to 15 minutes until finally one of us went to ask for our change back. She was greeted with a surprised "oh..." before they finally gave us our money - we had never said anything about wanting them to keep the extra Euros. To top it all off, on our way out of the restaurant, one of us tripped. The chef proceeded to call her a whore not knowing that she spoke Italian. I have never been so horrified and embarrassed by a restaurant experience. I wish I could describe the level of unprofessionalism that both the owner and chef displayed, and I was truly embarrassed for the people of Taormina that this joke of an owner and restaurant are trying to sell this place as "authentic, organic, and locally sourced Italian food." I am from the southern United States and have never had any Italian food there or anywhere else in the country that was as bad as this. Bonus if you made it this far: the bottle of wine we finally settled on (after the 3 bottles we asked for first weren't available) was amongst the worst red wine I've ever had, the white wine tasted like fermented apple juice, and the free bread was stale. I recommend this restaurant if you are looking for the worst dining experience in Sicily. Otherwise, stay far away for the owner is simply looking to make money by selling terrible, slimy food to unsuspecting tourists. This restaurant and its reviews are proof that reviews can be bought. I encourage you to peruse these yourself so that you can get a better grasp on how fake of an establishment this is. He also told us in his enthusiastic opening speech that the restaurant had only been open for a year, when the first yelp review is 2015... Definitely a scam artist.

Sicily had long been on our travel wish list, and the recent White Lotus TV show only heightened that desire to check out this beautiful island. Just like the characters in White Lotus, our main base was in the resort town of Taormina (although we didn't stay at the exact same Four Seasons hotel, we were very happy with our choice of Hotel Villa Ducale with breathtaking views of the coastline and Mount Etna). It was truly a wonderful summer trip of beach club, wine tasting in Mount Etna and other stops in Noto, Siracusa and Ragusa following our stay in Taormina. On the other hand, maybe it was we were in mostly touristy areas or my faulty research but it is hard to say we had a truly memorable meal in some of the restaurants we had visited in Sicily. One restaurant we did like a lot (thanks to the recommendation of the hotel we were staying at) was Osteria RossoDiVino in Taormina. We visited the restaurant on our second day in Taormina after a full day at the beach club. The food was mostly delicious with one standout item that Jun and I can't stop thinking about. The restaurant is located away from the touristy center of Taormina in a hidden alley. Just like a typical Sicilian restaurant, the menu is focused on seafood, and our server brought a giant plate of fish that were caught that day. If there is one item that you absolutely need to try at RossoDiVino, it is the fried anchovies with white mayonnaise. Jun doesn't even like anchovies that much but the ones at the restaurant were rather large and fried to perfection. We would've been perfectly happy eating just these without anything else for the rest of the night. We also opted to split one of the pasta specials on the blackboard, linguine all'astice with lobster. It was somewhat pricey at 40 euros (especially with a rather modest portion) but a pretty solid dish. Among the catch of the day options, we chose a bigeye fish cooked Sicilian stew style using tomato broth that was simple yet well-executed. Since we were in Sicily, we felt compelled to try some cannoli with ricotta cheese and RossoDiVino's dish was not disappointing, especially with a glass of fortified Sicilian wine of marsala. The restaurant's outdoor space is not large so if you want to book for prime-time dinner during a busy touristy season, making a reservation in advance is highly recommended (the restaurant doesn't seem to have reservations available via one of the restaurant reservation websites but if you are staying at a hotel, you can ask them for help in securing a reservation by phone like we did). Sicily's wines have been getting worldwide recognition for a while and RossoDiVino's selection from a variety of regions in the island is excellent for exploring the versatile terroir of these wines. Thanks to the restaurant's location, we didn't feel like we were dining at a touristy trap and it was great to have a relaxing summer meal in a charming outdoor seating without all the noise coming from the main street of Corso Umberto. As beautiful as Taormina is as a vacation destination, its food scene may not be what you would the best from Sicily, but if there is one restaurant that is worth checking out, I would say RossoDiVino is one such place.

We also had a glass of wine which wasn't a house wine but essentially picked based on our preference. We ended up getting the raw starter which included raw shrimp, langastinos, oyster, amberjack carpaccio and white tuna tartare. Then we had a seafood pasta with finally a fillet of amberjack served with broccoli and some mashed potatoes. All in with wine the bill came to about $150 euro. Also the bread was excellent and freshly made in house, it's charged to the table but honestly worth the $3 per person.

Then comes the bill at the end....not sure why but they tacked on a $6 cover charge for the table and they also charged as water (we asked for tap water!!!) I would not have minded if they had informed us beforehand but given the experience, it just felt like they were trying to rip us off. Overall, a terrible experience and I would not recommend.
