I went to two Orthopedic surgeons who both said I needed rotator cuff surgery. A few people (two in the medical field) told me to have Dr. Schofield do my surgery, so I went to him expecting to make a surgical date. He looked at my MRI, did some manual tests on my shoulder movements which were very limited and said that I don't need rotator cuff surgery and that I have a frozen shoulder and to increase my PT. I was shocked and thrilled that I sought a third opinion. My shoulder is getting better with increased intense PT. Sadly, the nerve damage in my shoulder which is affecting the use of my dominant hand might need surgery and Dr. Schofield is helping me find the right surgeon for this unusual surgery as there's no one in Sarasota that does it. Dr. Schofield is kind, soft spoken, explains things well and listens to my questions and concerns. His staff are all very nice, and the only negative is that you can't leave a voice message. If they're answering another call the recording says to call back and then disconnects.

This is going to be a long story, but I hope this could help someone…read more My ankle was broken with a ligament issue, and I was referred to see a specialist. The main office couldn't figure out the referral form from my primary doctor for 3 days, while telling me to call them to send the right paperwork, when I didn't even know what that was. After I told them I'd find another surgeon, they magically sorted it out. (Btw, this doc doesn't know how to use any modern tech. I was at 1st appt for over 4hrs). I got my surgery scheduled with Dr. Bright very soon. I had a plate and screws inserted into my ankle, which took about 2 hours. My main issue with care was that I was not given any pain medication but told to take Tylenol, although I have no history/issue with it. I had to call the next day and plead for medication while crying in pain. Also, I kept falling during my rehab, which my PT reported to the surgeon. His note should've raised a red flag, but my surgeon or office never called. When I went to see him, he briefly looked at my X-ray and my ankle and recommended removal surgery. I ended up getting surgery from a different doctor, and he said that my ligament was torn, and this should've been easily seen from an X-ray when I was injured at the beginning, and this should've been fixed during my first surgery. Why should you have a surgeon who barely listens to you, reads your charts or notes before coming into your room, or checks your updates from PT? I'm still suffering 2 years later after 2 surgeries; this may be permanent. Do not get close there.

I've been a patient for…read moreabout 8 years, but am now looking for alternatives as it is very hard to be a patient here - you have to put up with a fair amount of "attitude" from the office staff. (I have been using the Potter Park office, but recently moved and will probably try another of their offices/MDs.) On the plus side: I did like my MD - and I need someone local just for those times I might need an antibiotic. The annual check ups are quite brief. Some blood work, a look in the eyes, ears, listening to the heart, and a bit more. Never more than 15 minutes, but that is pretty much the norm it seems, unless you go to a specialist for an extensive work up. The nurses are nice, but you can expect to be on hold for ten minutes or more every time you call. It took me 19 minutes this morning to reach a nurse for some information. I had left instructions for them to leave the info in my voice mail - but that is apparently too much to ask. It's been like that for all 8 years. And they don't seem to keep their files well organized. Trying to get documents from another specialist, even one of their own in another office, into your file for permanent storage is sketchy and unreliable. Example - a few years ago they had a really tough time getting a copy of my colonoscopy results, even though it was done by another doctor in their group. Good thing I saved my copy and brought it in. Having an out of town doctor send paperwork in to them sometimes got in my file, sometimes not. The office staff seems to regard it as a huge inconvenience. They did switch to a new computer system a few years ago, and it seems to have improved things, but I wouldn't rely on them to keep critical paperwork. The group has expanded over the years - they have their own blood center apparently - and I guess they have figured out how to work the system to maximize insurance payments and minimize costs. In short, don't expect too much and you won't be disappointed.

Discharged Without Notice -- Serious Communication Failure…read more I was very disappointed with Intercoastal Medical Group, Beneva Road. My doctor discharged me without any notice, even though I am 80 years old, and had been on prescribed medication from their office for a long time. Without renewal, there is a risk of serious health consequences. Communication was also difficult, and when I tried to discuss my concerns, I was told they don't share email contacts for managers or doctors. I hope Intercoastal Medical will take greater responsibility for continuity of care and clearer communication with patients.
