I have been a member at this sustainable winery for as long as I can remember! Every new wine they come out with is absolutely divine. All their wines are incredible. I can drink them and never get a headache, and I love the fact that you can come do a tasting in the amount goes towards a full bottle. You can go to Cirino's or Tofanellis if you ask the Winery for a card and there is no corkage fee so it's a win-win for everyone.' The family that owns this is absolutely amazing. Love, love this winery! Impressed with the first contact on Yelp and the great follow up and through. I called last Friday to inquire if they were going to be open. (CA under major smoke and fire). They expressed not sure, really smokey! Phil Starr texted back 15 min later and said they had a lot of requests to open and they did for the 29th of August. Call ahead of time b/c the fires are cray out there! Try the Chardonnay there is one that tastes similar to Rombauer, excellent wine, we bought two bottles. I don't enjoy Chardonnay very much but this was great and I liked it a lot. They had several others that were great and I bought some reds. The servers inside and serving outdoors in the back were great and very knowledgeable. You can bring food to snack on, just bring your own supplies of course. Great little shop for Knick nacks, wine supplies, glasses and of course their award winning wine. We'll definitely be back next time we are in town. read more

Great little winery on Main Street in Grass Valley. Did a Groupon for two. You get 5 tastes each and a free bottle of Petite Sirah.. The place is super cute and was built in 1872. Back in the day half of the winery was a cigar making place and the other half was where they actually sold the cigars. When you walk in you feel the history as you walk on the old floors. The red wine was very good and not to sweet, but bold and somewhat fruity. The Chardonnay was very Oaky and buttery. Sierra Starr Vinyard is a must stop when you are in Grass Valley. I bought the Almond Sparkling wine.... so yummy and refreshing. read more

We were in on 07/01. Wine pours were very minuscule. Staff left my guest and I sitting for a very long time to place our order. When we were done, we gave her our merchandise to purchase and also our wine order to one of the staff. Our purchase left the shop with someone else. We bought 2 bottles of Jacks Blend 11, thinking the price was $11 per bottle. When we called to clarify, Cindy very rudely responded "nice try", insinuating we were trying to get it for a lower price. Rude and discourteous customer service. read more

Surprisingly, this winery has a champagne on the tasting list (which is the cheapest on the list!) I thought the champagne was very refreshing, but almost a little too dry for me. I skipped tasting any of the red wines, so I can't review any of them. I wasn't super impressed with any of the whites, but none of them were bad either. Tasting is complimentary. read more

Two words: Almond Champagne. A few more words: The best champagne I've ever tasted in my entire life. Seriously. I've even had Crystal. Maybe I'm just a nut that really likes almonds (ha ha. get it?), but this was delicious. Cool and crisp, not syrupy like the stuff I usually get at Trader Joe's. It's actually made by Woodbridge (Robert Mondavi, anyone?) , but they have it here along with their other delicious wines. Nice tasting room. Nice dude named Jim doing the pours. First trip to Grass Valley and stumbled across this gem because of Yelp. And my experience was excellent! Bar seats were plentiful, and even on a rainy day the space felt super cozy. We were greeted promptly upon arrival, and the experience from start to finish took about 30 minutes. My friends and I visited this winery's tasting room today and we greeted by friendly and attentive staff members. Each recommended their favorite Zinfandels, and we were sold on the "Old Clone Zinfandel " Mmm...an affordable $16 price point. There was another zin available to try, but it was not as tasty to us. It was called the "Phil's blend". Named after Phil--the head guy who grows the grapes and makes the wine. Oops. I didn't mean to knock your personal "blend". Oh well. Sierra Starr Vineyard and Winery is a small family run operation. They have a Sirius Sipper Wine Club. Siriusly!! ha... Went in for winetasting with a friend and dealt with Phil, One of the owners. Got to meet their dog which I think was a lab... very cute and friendly. There were no bad wines that we tasted and there were two really standout wines (we were mostly focused on reds). The one I liked best was ENERTIA, a red blend. They only charge $5 per person for a tasting. Because their best wines were a little more expensive, I decided to join their wine club which only requires the purchase of two bottles per quarter whereas many require a monthly purchase. This entitles you to free tastings and a 20% discount. You can cancel anytime without any penalties. I think I've tried all the downtown winetasting spots and I feel this one was the best overall! read more

Our favorite local winery! I haven't found a varietal I haven't loved. The new release Cosmic Chardonnay is buttery. The Sauvignon Blanc has a wonderful grapefruit undertone. But I must say the Petite Syrah is so full bodied you could almost chew it (not really, but it's delightful). Any of the other reds are truly yummy. This was my first time to do a wine tasting since moving here to Cali. Even I was new to this experience, I was welcomed and educated at the same time. The owner answered all of my (stupid) questions and never talked down to me. I am normally a red wine drinker, so she kept me on that path as she gave me the samples. I enjoyed the way the whole place was decorated, very comfortable. I didn't notice until the end that at the base of the center table was this massive dog, just sleeping. Complimentary tasting. We came on Saturday and the whole family that runs the winery was there. They were very nice and we able to really explain their wines. The champagne was very good, a little dry but lots of flavor and pretty inexpensive. Didn't care too much for their whites- a little too 'astringent'. But all in all good wines for decent prices. read more

A great tasting room with great staff. We went a couple days before Thanksgiving so I think it was slower than usual and we were pretty much the only group there and we didn't feel rushed at all. We all paid for a tasting ($5/each) which provided us with 5 tastings of any of their wines. Port tasting was extra. I wasn't particularly wowed by any of their wines, but we enjoyed the ambiance and hung around and purchased another glass of wine. We also ended up buying a bottle of their champagne for Thanksgiving. FYI, you don't have to pay for a tasting fee if you buy a bottle of wine... which was a great deal for us since we paid as a couple (which would equal $10), and the bottle of champagne was $16ish. read more

My husband and I are wine club members here and absolutely love it! We always love going in the tasting room and looking around at all they have to offer. They have the cutest little wine things and collectibles - tee shirts, bottle stoppers, signs, glasses, etc. I love the exposed brick wall - it's very casual and down to earth in there, and I love it. I love the owner, Anne - she is so sweet and very informative when you are sipping wines. We ordered a case of champagne from Sierra Starr for our wedding and we were not disappointed in the least... we LOVE their wines! Been a wine club member for a number of years but never got around to posting a review. Very good wine at reasonable prices for a foothill winery. Always very accommodating and happy to give us a number of comp pours whenever we come in to pick up our quarterly wine club bottles. Happy to ship to other states also if you have family elsewhere in the USA for a California treat. Never had a bad wine here. Love the Cab franc and the best red lately has been the Inertia.
