It's been 9.5 years since Scott painted our house. For the most part it has held up ok but it now needs re-painting. Looking back, I wish he had used elastomeric paint for our stucco walls and done better prep work on the stucco cracks. Some of the wood areas that he tried to fill with bondo didn't last either. And the metal gate is rusting through as well. I guess the fact that they did almost no prep-work before painting is showing. And some (all?) of the re-used and re-tinted paint that Scott used on our project has faded in color. (Who knew he was going to re-use paint? He never told us up-front.) A couple notes from how the job went in 2014: Scott and his crew left ladders up against the house, paint buckets throughout the site, piles of tarps, ladders, boards and various supplies all within view of our front door. This wouldn't have been as big a deal if they were painting every day, but this occurred over weekends and multi-day spans when they worked on other jobs. Some days they just worked 1 or 2 hours. Scott left too many unfinished bits and pieces as he progressed and then couldn't complete them as the job wrapped up. In fact, he couldn't complete the job in the time frame he had said when he accepted the work or said when he started work on the job. The result was a hurried finish and with some issues he couldn't or didn't want to address because his clock (not mine) ran out. (I was able to get Scott to return to fix a few issues. It took him about two months after several phone calls & emails and finally telling him I was going to publish a review online. Then he showed up to handle the outstanding issues as best he could within the couple of hours he allocated for it.) Despite the issues noted above, Scott always had a professional and positive work demeanor, didn't damage our landscaping and a generally produced a good looking finished product. read more

It's my pleasure to UPDATE my previous review of Scott and Sierra Azul. Once again, Scott and his team hit it out of the park! My sun-drenched, south-facing Corralitos home had severely degraded over the years and looked its age (mid-70's). Remembering that Scott had painted two former houses of mine in Scotts Valley to perfection, I gave him a call. As before, he showed up on time (always!), and we consulted on the best way to restore my Corralitos home to its former glory. My huge deck required very detailed work on the extensive railings, the entire house was faded and peeling from all the sun exposure, and the interior was dark and drab. We consulted on colors, price, and timing. Scott gave great advice, and a quote that was quite fair and reasonable for the job. His guys showed up day after day, on time, and they were a pleasure to be around. They are careful, fast, and meticulous all at the same time. Scott keeps an eagle eye out and misses nothing. I was amazed, again, at what a great job they do. They did everything they said they would do, on time, with superior skill and great dedication. My house looks beautiful and I couldn't be happier! Scott, the owner of Sierra Azul Painting, did an awesome job painting my two homes, which he finished painting earlier this month (September 2017) My places had not been painted in almost 20 years and it was a big job! Yikes! But Scott did what he had to do to make the paint job look great... and he even threw in a few extras along the way. Also, after any project, there will always be a few touch ups and corrections. Scott did all of these without complaint, even after I paid him in full. I called the top 6 local painters on Yelp, and there are a lot of good ones, but not all had the time to paint my place before the rains came, since I called late in the summer. It is a political tool typically employed by those who do not want to address the issue at hand in a straight-forward and professional manner. Another ploy is to pivot the issue to a "diminished position". This technique is used to turn the attention of the reader away from the original deceit. They did ok, not much prep work as was spoken about prior like caulking and painting in cracks of the wood siding etc, they missed quote a few areas that I'm now taking care of, make sure to check the hard to see areas, under roof eves, tops of window / doors frames.I question it when they were done in like two days, I'm having a San Jose home painted and they've been here 3 days already, two days was for prep work alone. read more

The whole experience was professional and better than I could have expected. Scott is very thoughtful, reliable and punctual. He communicates really well; I was out of town most of the time and he made it all work out. He got everything finished quicker than I could have expected and it looks great. He took extra time to consult about different spaces and colors, and included more areas than I thought I could afford to paint. We highly recommend Sierra Azul Painting. Scott and his crew painted the exterior of our house in Aptos and did a great job. I'm guessing different people look for different things when it comes to choosing a painter. We have a very high home at places -- lots of surface area that gets heavy weather exposure. We also had a lot of arbor/trellis/lattice-work that needed to be painted. Naturally we were concerned about price, but we also wanted a really professional job that would last -- we plan to be here a while. We wanted someone local who cared about his reputation and would be around if we had any concerns down the line. We got three bids and were surprised with the big differences between them (why such a discrepancy?). Scott was our fourth and final bid. He took his time and talked through the possibilities for the different bids as well as his process. He's a no-nonsense guy which we really liked, and he's got a good eye for color. One of the things we really appreciated was the way he set expectations. We were quite clear about what we expected, and Scott was the same. We knew exactly when his crew would be there and around how long it would take (we had to work around a lot of rain). He was straightforward about his bid and what would be included. He also made it clear that costs wouldn't exceed his bid regardless of how much paint/labor was actually needed. He took care to stress the fact that paint covers things, but it's obviously not magic and can't fix things (we really should have listened more closely and had those few fascia boards replaced before painting, but he did warn us). His crew was polite, incredibly hard working, and tidied up when they left. I had a detailed walk-through afterward with him, and Scott was great about finishing up the final work quickly. Scott and his crew did an amazing job on our very challenging house. We live on a steep hill so it was mostly ladder work and even so they knocked it out in one week. Several other painters said it would take a month and wanted to charge per coat (some where 2x what Scott quoted). Scott gave us a great price and committed to use as much paint as it takes. This was important since it had been so long since the house was painted, the wood desperately needed a lot of paint. I asked him to do some extra work which he was happy to do and was reasonable and fair with the pricing. He mixes the colors himself and was very accommodating and made tweaks to make sure we were happy. Scott had painted the inside of my home when I wrote my first glowing review of Sierra Azul in 2016. Now it's time for another gush of praise! This summer I hired Scott and his polite, experienced crew again to paint the entire outside of my 2-story house, as well as the inside of the new kitchen. He encountered many problems, including substandard siding that needed many holes and seams caulked. I thought I was going to have to tear down the old ratty beadboard ceiling in the dining room, but Scott said, "Let's whitewash it and see what you think." It's fabulous - and saved a bunch of money. He advised me about paint types and colors so perfectly that I finally just let him make the decisions to complement the new kitchen countertops. Who needs a designer when you have a painter with such a great eye! All my friends are raving about the house, but they've advised me that nobody will believe my Yelp review unless I say something negative. So ok, Scott isn't fabulous at scheduling in the high season. Sometimes he arrives late, but he does show up. Now the whole house sparkles inside and out.
