Wow! Wow! Wow! No other place in the valley like the Sidebar! Elegant, stylish, romantic, vibrant!!! I challenge you to find an atmosphere like Sidebar.... Can't do it!!! Feels and looks like a hip, speak-easy you would only find in a metroplex. The atmosphere and vibe quality of service/servers are with exquisite!! Unequalled in the RGV. Our reservation time overlapped the live sax music and was followed by live vocalist!! They were both so subtle and were a complete complement to our experience and the vibe of the establishment!!! ENCORE Treated dear friends to the Sidebar experience and had a assortment of dishes: stuffed orange roughie, Ricotta stuffed ravioli w/shrimp, Marlot filet, Parmesan crusted pork - all delicious and unique in their own way. Appetizers were: empanadas, mozzarella wheels. End the evening with deserts: crème brule and a memorable "abuela" cake. Was greeted by the owner and shared his passion and standards of the Sidebar. Such a gentleman who cuts no corners and desperately wants to provide a unique experience the makes one say " there are only places like this in movies and big towns"!! Goal achieved Mr. P :). An Unforgettable 60th Birthday at the Best Restaurant in the RGV Last night, I celebrated my 60th birthday at Sidebar in Edinburg--and I can say without hesitation that it was one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. From the moment we walked in, everything was a perfect--the ambiance, the cocktails, the food, the service. Sidebar isn't just a great restaurant for the Rio Grande Valley--it easily competes with top-tier establishments anywhere. I felt like I was at an amazing place in NYC. We started with the tuna tartar tower and the filet mignon plantain cups--both were beautifully presented and packed with flavor. For my entrée, I went with the lamb chop lollipops over risotto--cooked to perfection and absolutely melt-in-your-mouth good. I finished the night with a classic crème brûlée that was as good as any I've had in New York or Vegas. To drink? A couple of Kettle One filthy martinis with blue cheese-stuffed olives for me--exactly how I like them. Strong, cold, and dangerously smooth. Our server, Robert, was top-notch--attentive (maybe even a bit too attentive at times!), but truly professional and kind throughout. The music was perfect. Not too loud, and perfectly matched the atmosphere. And as we were leaving, one of the owners took time to chat with us about the restaurant's story and some of the events they host. It wasn't just a handshake and a thank-you--he made us feel like our presence genuinely mattered and was appreciated. This place is something special. You can tell the staff and ownership take deep pride in what they're doing, and it shows in every detail. If you're looking for an elevated dining experience in the RGV--Sidebar is it. Hands down the best meal I've had in the area, and one I'll be thinking about for a long time. I'll absolutely be back, and I'll be bringing friends. Five stars isn't enough.

Arrived for a birthday dinner and found ourselves on Cloud Wine! Gratitude and appreciation for our server Robert, for ensuring that our table recieved excellent and efficient service with a combination of quality and comfort. The service was absolutely remarkable in equality with the delicious appetizers, entrees, desserts, and beverages. I used to be a server for four years in San Marcos, Tx, and I have visited so many restaurants around Texas. The Sidebar is by far the best location if you are looking for taste of comfort and luxury. We be back for more coconut creme brulee, Sinatra melodies and the unique experience!

This is the best of McAllen. It makes living in McAllen so much more tolerable. The decor is amazing. I love it. It's like Martha Stewart was involved but did it on acid...in a good way though. The service was exceptional, look for Jessica, she is great, to the point and has ghost stories if you want to hear them. She deserves a raise if I might say so.

Alright. I have eaten a lot of fine dining and even a few Michelin star restaurants, all around the world. I kept an open mind when coming here. And the ambiance definitely took me to some other favorite spots and speakeasies I've frequented in another time of my life. The service was good but my demands were nil- very simple. I chose to try this veg pasta - the pearl and grab a drink- Mary something This food really truly is a solid 3. Extremely average. Nothing extraordinary. Definitely edible. Reminded me of a good home cook's meal. The presentation was okay. The noodle quality and cook time was good. The sauce was okay. The vegetables were okay. The portabello mushroom topping was a little burnt but the concept was there. I think this could have been a 4 star dish with some tweaks. Salt predominated in the sauce. There were occasional hints of herbs like rosemary and oregano but it seemed like dried herb rather than fresh. For the price and ambiance I expect at least a fresh herb. The sauce was quite buttery which was fine but it lacked that elevated flavor and feeling. Usually veggie dishes and pastas are second tier for many chefs so I get it. But that's why I use them as a good judge for a restaurant. The Mary drink was also a 3. Once again elevated flavor complexity and flavor development was not there. It was a fruity type drink but it reminded me of a pre mixed cocktail type or like a college era jungle juice that happens to be pretty good. It had a very distinct saccharine sweetness and it left this cotton candy sugary vibe all around the mouth. But once again, definitely drinkable and bearable. Just not 4-5 star quality. Anyway I don't write this review to disparage the joint at all actually. But just to inform people that this is more for the speakeasy experience. I think the food may be hit or miss so I would come for the vibes and just expect a good edible meal but the food and drink itself is not fine dining. Yet, a LOT of respect to the owners and staff because it is something special in McAllen and probably a great memorable location for special events just because u feel like u are in another city or state for just a few moments thanks to the ambiance.

I travel to Texas all the time for work. I'm in San Antonio the most, but I'm also in Austin, DFW, and Houston a fair amount. This is hands down my favorite dining experience since I began coming to Texas two years ago. Best atmosphere, most amazing building/decor/history, excellent food, and phenomenal service. Cassandra was my server and she was impeccably polite and professional. She also recommended an amazing meal and introduced me to my new favorite gin (Monkey 47). The manager (Ruben, I believe) personally walked me to my table, introduced the restaurant, and checked in with me after the meal. Anyway, I hope to be in Edinburg again soon to visit a second time. I've never left a restaurant inspired enough to write a review the same evening. I hope y'all get to check it out when you're in town. In the meantime, keep it real.

The Steak Diane was not cooked as requested and the spinach was cold.

Absolutely unmatched in the valley! I didn't know what to expect but I beyond impressed. The vibe of the place is romantic and mysterious. There is thought and detail evidently placed in every crevice and corner of the place. The bar is GORGEOUS, it makes me feel like I'm in a trendy NYC nightclub, the drinks are fantastic, and the menu had lots of unique options. There's a sophisticated little loft area upstairs with some soft seating that i would enjoy sipping some drinks at on my next trip. The crab cakes and the French 75 were my highlights. I will 100% be coming back. Although the prices are steep, the cost is totally justified by the unique and - in my option - the nicest dinner experience in the RGV. read more

Live jazz that was not too loud which was fantastic as we wanted to have a nice discussion with our friends. From the moment you entered the space you were transported from the valley to a sophisticated era. While in Edinburg Tx found a diamond in the rough. Sidebar. A speakeasy, jazz bar and dinner venue with an amazing bar! The owner bought the building of the Daily Review newspaper and spent what looks like millions renovating the building! When I asked for a whiskey and coke, they wanted to know if I wanted to see the whiskey menu! Well of course I did!! Their chef is cordon-blue trained from Vegas! The food was amazing! After only waiting 10 minutes for a table on a Saturday night with a lovely hostess who was very conversational, we were taken to our table and given a history of the building and the area which as a local, I enjoyed very much. The music was lovely and relaxing. Our server was very sweet and visited us regularly but not too much. The drinks were amazing, I had a Jack Rose and my date had a Mary Pickford. The food was worth the price in my opinion, I had the crab cakes and my date had the veal meatloaf. We tasted each other's food and sides so I can say everything was amazing. There was lovely conversation all around, nobody at the bar was too rowdy or noisy. I'll be coming back very soon to one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. read more

We went for our anniversary based on a recommendation. This is an experience! And a real hidden gem. We were greeted by Robert (owner) who gave us a tour and background on the history of the building - fascinating! Then he introduced us to Cassandra - our server - who continued with a tour and pointing out interesting artifacts. The meal was absolutely terrific! And the service was superb. They added a nice touch with a "Happy Anniversary" desert and Steve (bartender) also made us complementary cocktails. He is a real artist! They had a live Saxophonist (Friday evening). Robert also came by to check on us and added a couple complementary glasses of champagne. By the time we left, we felt like Robert, Casandra and Steve were friends. We also noted how the other servers were just as nice with great service to their guests. Definitely a great experience and this is now our go-to place. Highly recommend it! read more

First of all the ambience and decor is incredible. The service got off to a slow start but everyone was very friendly and helpful. The food selection is limited because they're just growing but the food was absolutely delicious. The drinks are very well crafted and extremely tasty. Honestly it would be a great place to go for drinks and dessert or drinks and an appetizer. I can't wait to see how this place grows and what it will bring to Edinburg. The place was very lovely, as well as all the décor. Menu is small and there are no prices online. We each got 'The Filet' and it did not meet up to our expectations for $50/plate. My steak was dry and very tiny, did not look like 7oz. We went for a friend's birthday reservations and the also took an eternity to gives us our tickets. It was very inconvenient. However, the atmosphere was great but, for me this is more of a place to come and have a drink(s), enjoy a nice conversation with an appetizer. read more

My husband and I don't get a chance to have date nights often but we were sooo surprised by this hidden gem! The atmosphere, the jazz and every detail is meticulously selected to create a wonderful night away! We started w the salmon nachos and they were amazing. Next, the crab cakes were the very best I have EVER had! And you must, I repeat you must, have a slice of their peanut butter pie! You may be full by the end of your dinner but you must make room for dessert! This is a great date night locale or just a place to hang out w some friends! Splurge. Go. And Be Merry. Had a great time last night! We usually don't take the time to post reviews however this little hostess stole us w her smile. Walking in, we were not sure what to expect. Rarely dine in Edinburg, but our neighbors had recommended this hidden spot, we had to try it. Hostess who greeted us was refreshingly nice & made our night. She even took time & gave us a small tour. . Cassandra made us feel welcomed, even though it was busy she managed to give us the best recommendations. Rare service now a days....We will definitely be returning and asking for her tip on which desserts & wine to try. Her choices didn't disappoint, bourbon bread pudding, delicious!!The dinner was ok, decent portions ,over seasoned, salty, but the desserts , ambiance and service made up for it. History

Established in 1920.

The Edinburg Daily Review building located in historic downtown Edinburg was built in the early 1920s and continues to stand as a testament to the charming history of the city. Originally, the building was used as an icehouse that operated through the 1950s until it evolved into the Daily Review, one of the oldest and most trusted newspapers in Edinburg. The newspaper shuttered and the building was abandoned for more than a decade until purchased in 2016 by the Puig family. A two year detailed restoration brought this forgotten relic back to life. Great care was taken to preserve as much of the old world charm and architecture when restoring this prohibition era landmark.

I don't really go out of the way to write reviews, because I'd much rather prefer a first hand experience with little to no bias, but I was astounded by the sheer elegance, sophistication and history that I needed to write this. The building perseveres the history of the past Edinburg Daily Review. Gorgeous brick walls and even an arch embracing a printing press from a lost era give it a definite "wow" factor and this is only the entrance. There's a hallway that leads to couple different eating areas and a main area dining area with a stunning bar. From the furniture, lighting, history and just the right touch of modern sleekness Sidebar encompasses a style that I can only describe as the perfect combination of timeless vintage class and current time charisma, never to go out of style. The food wasn't any less than the look of the establishment. Each course was full of flavor and portioned well. I like to eat a lot and I was left fully content. I don't usually get appetizers, but you MUST try the roasted red peppers with crab, seriously mind blowing. The main courses and dessert were simply splendid. I can't think of a better place for that special occasion or event in your your life. I feel the prices are more than fair for the experience in its entirety. This place is a true hidden gem. SideBar is more than just a restaurant or bar, it's an experience! From the moment you open the front doors you're immediately greeted by a professional staff member so well versed in the history of the building and it's origins. You're taken down a hallway and shown a series of elegant conference rooms (available to the public) and shown a bit of history throughout each room. There are additional rooms across with towering glass walls and provide a large city museum-esque experience. These room showcased art pieces from a recent art exhibit and they have a private watch vendor located inside for a personal and private purchasing experience. Just absolute class!!! You continue to walk toward the end of the hallway and turn to see the breathtaking, speakeasy inspired dinning area. From antique, historical decor to large vivid paintings displayed throughout the dinning area. Words cannot do any justice when describing the experience all patrons will have at SideBar. My wife and I celebrated our 6 year anniversary this past weekend at SideBar and it will be a memory we will cherish for the rest our lives. read more

I have been to Sidebar several times now while visiting the Valley from San Antonio. The ambiance is simply delicious eye candy from the period lighting, furniture and walls covered in original brick, slated wood and even fur. The serving staff are knowledgeable about everything from drinks, specials, and meals including the ingredients and how they are prepared. Ivan, our server was attentive and made our dinner perfect from pre dinner drinks to dessert. We enjoyed a personalized cocktail prepared by the bar tender. The pan seared snapper served over pesto risotto was excellent. The finale to our experience was the delighting in the freshly French pressed coffee with pumpkin bread pudding topped with house made ice cream. We were delighted further as saxophone player, Leo, played moody speakeasy tunes As we visited with Robert, the owner Of Sidebar. I like everything about this place especially the décor and the way they set everything up the customer service is great although the menu is small they don't have much to order from and it's a bit on the pricey side for the way it was served. So for me this is more of a place to come and have a drink, enjoy a nice conversation with an appetizer. It can be place that doesn't make you feel like you're in Texas. Sorry Sidebar, I love great food and the filet migon I ate tasted like barbacoa. The atmosphere is very classy and my wife and I enjoyed the live jazz they play on Thursdays.
