We arrived promptly for our reservation and were warmly greeted by Salvo who went over the details. He tried to upgrade us but was very politely declined and that was fine. He also offered the insurance but we declined that as well as it is included with my credit card. He finally offered the prepaid fuel and that we decided to take as I have no idea where gas stations are in Palermo and how they work. It was nice not to have to think about that today. They did take a €400 deposit on my credit card, but it's a deposit and they will release those funds in two weeks or so. No biggie and customary for rental cars. We walked out to the lot which is adjacent to the airport. If it's raining, you will get wet as it's a decent walk and it is entirely outside. At the hut, a nice employee had our car out front and we walked around looking for damage. If there was any, I didn't see it. The car was a Toyota Aygo, a four-cylinder five-door hatchback. Black. Stick-shift. It was very easy to drive, very clean and we had a good time. At one point, I had it up to 130 kph and it was perfect. Returning the car was easy. There's a huge sign for rental car returns. We followed the arrow, pulled into a space and another employee was there to check it out. No problems and we were on our way. Horrible. I was quoted a price in American dollars but when I returned the car, Hertz charged me…read morethat price in Euros. When I returned home, Hertz customer service confirmed that the price was in dollars. When my credit card was charged that price in Euros, I called Hertz again and this time, Hertz told me that the Hertz person I spoke with yesterday was mistaken because "they always quote in Euros." When I said that I was staring at the quote in dollars, the Hertz person told me to e-mail customer service and see if they were willing to do what I was trying to "get them to do." Now, I am wasting my time trying to get the $112 overcharge back. The other car that we rented from Hertz broke down on the side of Mt. Etna and the replacement cost us our entire day on the Vulcano. My advice is to use one of the local companies.

Awful! Dirty cars, bad service, poor signage, bad transportation to and from the terminal. (We…read moreactually had to walk to the terminal, like a ways, in the rain) Italians don't wake up til late so I guess 7:30 was too early for them to get to work. The Audi we rented was so dented and scratched on all 4 sides and they did a terrible job cleaning the inside of it. American Express set up the reservation and we will be sure to let them know how disappointed we were.
