I am filled with shame and guilt as if I were a 14 year old boy caught looking at porn while in Catholic school. And yet, like him, I still walk away with the pleasure. Wow. That was taudry. Bikes do that to me. TWO YEARS it took me to walk into this shop and it is just what a bike shop should be. It's a small space packed FULL of gems. So full that they got a cargo shipping container just to store some of the extra stuff. Would you like to stare with admiration and desire at a vintage wool jersey? Just look up and you'll find a couple on the wall. Need wheels? Crane your neck more and you'll find a ceiling full. Bob Jackson frame? Tada! At this point in time I should reveal myself as a classic Italian bike-building enthusiast. In fact, I've been known to sacrifice dinner for a few weeks to gather money for a crankset. It's a problem. Well, less so now that I'm in the midwest. I was spoiled by cities where cycling is an identity, a lifestyle, and job. And here? Craigslist's got nothin' and neither do the bike shops. Thank goodness I found this place. It gives me hope and relights my fire. They have file cabinets full of loose smaller parts. They can order anything for you. They buy bikes and then rebuild them. Then they sell them. They fix bikes. They build wheels. Name a part and if they don't have it, they know what you're talking about, and they can call you if they get it in. Used or new, top quality or newbie quality, they've got it. I haven't tried any of their shop services but it looks like they have their stuff together. I trust any bike mechanic that is head to toe covered in bike grease and has an introverted demeanor. Head over here. Then put that rubber to the road, pedal fast, and ride hard my friend.

Happy Cat!

Simply the best in the business. Michael and Joe are customer-oriented, while bringing the beauty of cycling to this great city.

Stopped in to get a lock and the guys were very helpful and friendly. If I lived on the Northside this would be my go-to bike shop.

The open hours are limited, but I was able to easily set up alternate times to come in for both the drop-off/initial consult and the pick-up. Prices are very fair, and your options are explained in order of importance/cost-effectiveness, which is super helpful. For example, I was advised to replace my brake pads and broken axle, but hold out on replacing my worn chain and cartridge until spring/summer since the chain will rust over the winter and it wasn't yet in such bad shape that it was a danger.

I was looking for a fairly budget option, a bike I can feel comfortable locking up outside in Ann Arbor and Detroit and that I wouldn't be devastated to have stolen (although I'm not inviting that...!). I swung by the ReUse Center hoping to get lucky, but lucky I was not. I checked Craigslist but the thought of setting up multiple appointments to check out random bikes, most or all of which I would probably decide against, sounded like more work than I was willing to put in. This is where On Your Left came in. I came across an online mention of On Your Left that noted the limited hours but praised the owner for his knowledge and fairness; it also said he carries more used bikes than apparent in photos currently online. I decided to investigate. Initially I drove past; the signage for the On Your Left part of the business should be larger/clearer so people know they're in the right place. I was hesitant to enter the store simply because it did not look like a bike shop on the outside. However, I was on a mission and was undeterred. It turns out that, although the shop is small, there are indeed refurbished bikes inside. I think there were around a dozen on the day I was there. They ranged in price from approximately $150 and up, and included a variety of models, men's and women's both. If I remember correctly, there was even a child's bike available. I saw a bike that looked close to what I was looking for (a women's mountain bike with a size medium frame) and asked Luciana, one of the co-owners of the shop, if I could take it for a test ride. She got the bike out for me and told me to take it for as many spins around the block as I wanted. I did take it out for 3 brief rides, making adjustments to the seat height, checking out the gears and brakes, and taking some time to think about it. She was completely patient with me and did not try to persuade me but instead let me spend time with the bike and decide on my own. I really appreciated that since salespeople who pester customers to make a purchase will drive me away from a business every time. I did end up purchasing the bike, an entry-level Raleigh model with Shimano components in perfect working order for $160 + tax. I was fine with the price given that the bike has been refurbished wonderfully and there was nothing I had to do to get it into working order. I left feeling really happy and excited about my new used bike! Luciana was wonderful, taking time to check the air in the tires, adding more so it was in the correct pressure range, and giving me a few tips. She also said I should feel free to stop by when I need the tires pumped up. If I need repairs on this bike or on my higher-end bike (that, alas, resides in a locked building apart from where I currently live), I will definitely return to On Your Left for those services. There was no condescending attitude here and no pressure to buy anything. Nothing but wonderful, personal service from business owners trying to make a go of doing the things they love, adding something unique to Ann Arbor (not easy to do!) in an out of the way location that is definitely worth seeking out. I wish them all the best in their endeavor.

You should go to Urban Rider Cargo Bikes today…read more I had been saving up and researching electric cargo bikes for years until last Christmas when my partner surprised me with a hefty sum he had been saving up for my first ebike. I knew exactly where to go because I am extremely fortunate to live only a couple of miles from the store in Ann Arbor. I'd been there many times before just wandering around and admiring the vast and varied selection of electric bikes they have ready to ride. Finally I was ready to actually make a purchase at last. I talked with one of the owners, Kim, about the key features about some of the bicycle options available in store and what I was looking for in terms of size, use, range, etc.. She's a bicycling guru - superb at making people comfortable asking any and all questions and then answering them in a thoughtful and easy going way. This NOT an intimidating bike shop. Within minutes of taking a test ride on a Riese & Muller Multicharger Mixte I knew that I could not settle for anything other than this particular bike. The Mixte has such amazing features that make it a joy to ride. I love the size, the easy to use controls, the comfortable ride, the rear seating option for my kiddo, the accessories, the rock solid kickstand, and everything else about it. In my opinion, it's an engineering and design home run in the electric cargo bike world. It truly is the most fun transportation option I could ever imagine. Now, it's time to get one for my partner.

This got me thinking, or rather remembering, about Student Bike Shop. I am usually one to err on the side of giving folks the benefit of the doubt, but after several unpleasant encounters with this store, I feel completely fine sharing my feelings that this place is just plain difficult to deal with. The older man at the counter is indeed often in a foul mood -- and it's not in an endearing way. Some people can rock a curmudgeon vibe at any age, but that's not the case here. My attempts at getting repairs here were so frustrating that I'd happily walk, bike or drive to a store that's farther from campus to spend money on something simple like a bike lock. I feel like this store corners some of the student market because of its location, but if it's service people want, I'd advise checking into a few of the other local shops before you decide where to spend your dough.

I also once came in well before closing time to pick up my "repaired" bike and was refused to be helped by the older man working there because he was too busy "closing up shop." The only reason why I come here is because I don't have a car and this is the only bike shop within walking distance from my house when I have a flat. If you are able to get to Sic Transit Cycles, go there instead for literally any type of service. This bike shop is a prime example of why geographic monopoly power is bad for consumer welfare.
