I was a therapy tech at this facility. I must say, the only reason I kept showing up to work was because of the patients and residents there. Many of the admits had been through the worst and having the opportunity to be by there side, offering encouragement and assisting with therapy meant a lot to me. I enjoyed transporting residents back to their rooms as I had many great talks with them. Most shared what was on their heart with me, some shared their fears, and a few their passions. I give this facility one star because that is the lowest rating I can give. I dealt with bullying, belittling, and racial prejudice on a daily basis. I reported this to corporate many times, but to no avail. I struggle with depression and anxiety, so everyday was a battle to go to work. I worked in the therapy department, and unfortunately most of my co-workers treated their patients like numbers. There is little to no empathizing and understanding with the patients. This made the residents upset and my heart broke for them. This facility is focused more on speed than its patients. Do not work here. read more

If the stars were just for therapy, I would give a 4, but since it's for the entire place, the bad out ways the good, therefore I have to give a 1 star. My mom spent 6 weeks in the Skilled Rehab Center for rehab after a 2 week stay in the hospital. She has Vascular Dementia, so she needs to be checked on more often. Also, she has no concept of the call bell even though it was for the most part right near her. I would visit daily and ring it for something mom may have needed. It would ring no less than 30 minutes up to an hour and 10 minutes with several staff members just walking past the door, ignoring the call bell going off. When someone would finally come in the room, it was always with the excuse that they are short staffed, and it will be a while before they can do what you rang for and then would leave. Trying to call to talk to my mom was a mess daily because they never would put the phone by her. I would have to call the main number which doesn't accept private numbers, so I had to lift the privacy off my number to be able to call there. They then would call the nurse's station a few times and tell me no one is answering, can they take my name and number and have someone call me back, which almost never happened. I had brought in a bunch of personal items for her, like shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush, toothpaste, lotion, deodorant, stuff for her dentures, etc. Apparently, they don't believe in morning care because barely any of the items I brought were used. I took her dentures out to soak at night before I left, and most of the time when I came the next afternoon they were still in the bathroom. This means she ate 2 meals without teeth, you've got to be kidding me!! They also never brushed her teeth. Each room is scheduled for 2 showers a week. Well she was lucky that she got 1 a week. She only drinks pepsi, so I made sure I kept her stocked up and had them put it in her plan of care to make sure she had one at lunch and dinner with 2 glasses of ice and a straw and staff would fix it up for her with the meal tray so she wouldn't spill it, and offer her 1 throughout the day so she gets adequate fluids, yet when I would come to visit I would see that the pepsi cans were not decreasing as they should be. They would always change her tv channel off of the channel she always watches. It came to the point where one of the nurses typed up notes and hung them in mom's room so that the things that were not being done daily would actually get done. It's a terrible shame when the staff cannot do their job and notes have to be hung up. The nurses also leave a lot to be desired. When you ring to see one chances are you won't. Sometimes my mom got medicine while I was there and other times even though I left quite late, she didn't. Can someone explain that to me?? They also use A LOT of Agency staff there which if I would have known I probably would not have picked this place for her. While she was there, she also tested + for c-diff. After her course of atbs, she was still exhibiting strong symptoms of still having it, but instead of continuing the atbs , they just discharged her like that:( For the last and main reason, she was there....Therapy. I did not ever see any of her sessions because of the time I came to visit, and her therapy was earlier in the day. She was always tired later when I visited because therapy worked her out good she would say to me. Also when the stnas would transfer her from the recliner to bed, I noticed an improvement from when she first got there. Also a couple of days before her discharge I was invited to do a therapy session with them, so I was able to see my mom transfer and ambulate. She did great. She will never be back to her old self, but seeing her walk from one end of the room to the other just made me so happy. Thank you to the Altenheim Therapy Rehab Center for that! read more

We sent our mother here for therapy in the Skilled Nursing Section. She was sent there from the hospital after having covid and suffering from weakness. They looked at her first and said she was inappropriate for therapy but did not tell us. A week later they called us and said our insurance was not covering her any more because she was not receiving therapy. When they told us this we asked them to evaluate her again for therapy. they then said she could receive therapy. They asked us to handle the insurance appeal. Having had a dad at another skilled nursing facility who handled their own appeals multiple times without any issue, we requested that they do it. Reluctantly, they placed an appeal to stay there and get her more therapy at their place. They called us today to let us know that the appeal was denied. They could not tell us why. We also heard different stories as to why she did not get therapy from her aides. One aide told us that they were not giving therapy to those in her wing because of covid. They let us know that they could file an appeal again but if we lost we would be self pay during the time she was there pending the second appeal decision - which could take up to two weeks. So We chose to send her back to her assisted living facility having received no therapy. None of this makes any sense as the reason that they allegedly lost the appeal the first time was because she wasn't getting therapy. So if she was then getting therapy she shouldn't have lost the second appeal. So we ended up sending her for an entire week for no reason. My father had to spend his 94th birthday alone so she could go sit in their facility for a week, presumably making them a decent buck for their time. This facility obviously doesn't care about their patients otherwise my mother would never have been treated like this. I'm very disappointed in this facility. They robbed my parents time together and caused them stress for no reason. I would also like to say that my sister is an occupational therapist. Based upon what she heard regarding my mother's therapy, she believes that there was really no effort in trying to give her therapy. Even in super limited patients you can do minimal therapy to help them. When we brought this up to them they agreed. We also brought up to them that if the patient was not together in the AM, that they should arrange to try in the PM. They agreed also but this never happened with my mother. My mother spent 16 days in their Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitative care unit this September and October recovering from a fall. She was absolutely thrilled with the care that she received both at the facility and with the follow up visits to her home. She is not an easy person to please and has had experience at several other nursing homes. Her only complaint was that they gave her too much food. read more

I've had 3 relatives in Altenheim. Rated the best in Ohio for a reason. Best Therapy, Best in care, and food and entertainment abound. They are a non profit so the money goes to hiring help, which rarely ever leave indicating a great place to put your loved one. read more

Hire skilled staff... who care about residents. The excuse that you cannot find skilled staff in any profession has been around since the world was created. Top management spends all day in meetings or doing public relations. Spend a little time with the residents going room to room. Nursing supervisor Michelle does not have time to go room to room speaking with residents ... got upset when she was told exactly that. She ganged up with the LPN on floor and the hourly low calber aides sent by outside agency.and told me that Altenheim was not a hotel... it was a nursing home where one has to wait for a long time if need me as they can't always respond to call button activation. I was a resident in June and July 2019. I experienced almost every day response time of about 15 minutes to a hour for someone to even come and ask as to what I needed ... whether I was in the bed, wheelchair or on the toilet. I like many other residents would fall asleep while sitting on the toilet. Most of the aides did not have any knowledge of public hygiene. The minute they entered the bathroom they would wear these tiny gloves which not fit many and handle you and then with the same soiled gloves touch you or handle the food trays. One time one of the aides while giving me a sponge bath wiped my rear and then used the same washcloth to wipe my face and rest of the body. I had to get up and asked her to call the nurse on duty. The nurse on duty just stood there looking angrily at me... she had no clue. Residents falling down from the bed or toilet was normal. The aides would say "another one". These residents were elderly and had no one to visit them. At one time, an aide told me that if I did not like it there that I should go back where I came from (I took it as a racial slur). read more
