A good friend has been trying to get me to go to yoga but I've been resistant...honestly I hate downward dog, and sitting with legs crossed is challenging for me. But I'm focused on improved flexibility, self health and stress reduction and yoga is highly beneficial in targeting all of these. So off to Shri I went. Mary was an amazing, fun, entertaining (lion's roar) instructor who minimized your self thoughts on "I can't do this, I'm so not good at this, I stink at yoga." By her kind, caring, empathetic comments during the class. She is an amazing instructor! Her guidance in improving postures, holds, poses was supportive and so assistive. I absolutely enjoyed what I was initially dreading to do ...yoga. The class pointed out how tight my muscles, tendons, ligaments are and how much I truly need Shri. I love it here at Shri Yoga. The owner is so warm and welcoming filled with a huge smile. The instructors are also very nice and each class they explain the poses, so it's easy to learn at your own pace. Shri yoga even offers free days for certain subjects and individuals. WOW!! I think I fell in love with yoga. This was my first time ever doing yoga and with everything going on in my life this is exactly what I need to feel grounded again. The pace and instructor was great and I love everything they're doing in the community. I look forward to enrolling in future class and hopefully be able to try the new coffee shop coming soon. The yoga was amazing, I will be sore in am. ( I might be a tad out of shape) the instructor was very zen and she knew her stuff. The space they have now is amazing, remodeled with the history of the building on display for all to see and learn. The mission that these people are a part of is amazing. The kids and adults with developmental disability and the community outreach programs that they been doing for the last 15 years should be commended. With this new space they will help so many more people. Their story and mission brought me to tears ( happy tears). They are opening classes now to the public. and I hope you go and check them out. To enjoy the classes and know that a portion of the money goes back in to their programs. Please if you are looking for something to enrich your live and the live of others. This is a cool mission based nonprofit yoga studio. I've taken advantage of two classes that are free to Pawtucket and Central falls residents and have enjoyed them. The spaces really beautifully done and the clientele is diverse. read more

If Yelp had hashtags, then #nosoupforyou would describe my experience with Shri. They get points for opening a spacious studio with a good slate of classes and at least one pleasant, competent instructor in Mary in what is a pretty depressed town, but demerits for locking the door and giving the evil eye 4 minutes into a class. 4 minutes, really? The light in evil-eye instructor told the light in me to take a hike. I felt the sudden rush And, indeed, it is a bit of a hike from here to Synergy Yoga in Barrington, but it's an awesome Baron Baptiste-affiliate power yoga studio where they actually want you in the class. read more

I have been practicing yoga off and on for five years, but shri is the first studio that I like enough to drag my ass out of bed on weekend mornings. I love the space - it has huge windows, very tall ceilings, and warm light wood that makes the room very soothing. I really appreciate that the owner/staff is trying to help revitalize downtown Pawtucket - as far as I can tell they go out of their way to be involved with and give to the community. Obviously every instructor is different (and everyone's taste in an instructor as well), but I have found the vinyasa classes I have attended were great for students of almost any skill level, with the instructor (Allison) providing alternate poses for beginning-intermediate-advanced students. read more

Before I get into my review of Shri Studio, let me explain: I go to yoga to de-stress. I love taking an hour or so out of my day to relax and unwind in a nonjudgmental space. I've been practicing yoga for about two years, so I'm no expert, but I'm not a novice either. From the moment I dropped in on a class at Shri Studio things didn't go quite how I had hoped. I was greeted by the instructor who tried, right away, to push me into buying some sort of package deal for classes. Not cool. Once I paid, I realized that only one other student was there. I thought maybe more people would show up at the last minute...but no one did. I should have left right there and then, but I foolishly stayed. Instead of leading the two of us through a series of poses as is the usual, the instructor decided to focus all of her energies on me: giving me a weird massage, pushing me deeper into poses (even though she did not know me or my abilities), and making comments that made me feel very uncomfortable ("ohhh we're going to have to work on this!"). Of course, I realize that there are other instructors at Shri, and that, at every yoga studio you go to, you have to find someone who is the right fit for your personal style. But honestly, I just thought this woman was downright unprofessional. So I will not be going back to Shri Studio, which is kind of a shame, because the space itself is so beautiful, and parking is pretty easy. read more

A friend brought me to Alison's class at Shri when I first moved to Providence two years ago, and I've been a big fan of Shri ever since. The studio is expansive and bright, and with enough space that you never feel packed without enough room to move around. About a year ago, a different friend brought me to Caroline's class, and I think I've been an almost regular Monday/Friday student ever since--there's no better way to begin and start the week and Caroline is a gracious, encouraging, and challenging teacher. Plus, I definitely see and feel the change over the year--my hips are finally becoming more nimble, handstands are super exciting, and I've now got a number of tricks up my sleeve for my tight shoulders. In my previous years of on-and-off yoga, part of what always let me walk away from the practice was classes that didn't seem to change much week to week, let alone month to month. Although there are definitely standard sequences in both Alison and Caroline's classes, there is always something new and exciting to try. I actually find myself trying things at home, inspired by my experience at class to try something outside of class--that's a huge step for me, and I'm grateful to Shri for the encouragement! I really appreciate the friendly atmosphere at Shri, the variety of programming (Caroline has lots of live music classes throughout the season) and exciting guest teachers, and all that the studio does within the community of Pawtucket. I'll also say that I've found the studio to be kind and flexible about all variety of things--timing, sign-ups, the "where's my punchcard?" moments. I moved to Providence from Boston, where there is a plethora of busy, mildly competitive yoga studios (exciting, but somewhat anxiety provoking nonetheless)--Shri is such a breath of fresh air, and a nice, warm place to come "home" to. read more

Hi everybody. My name is Jim and I work as a Correctional Officer at the state prison for men. Yoga was suggested to me by my doctor when I was having stress related sleep issues and I wanted an alternative to medication. I chose Shri because of the proximity to my house. How fortunate for me.I stopped in to check it out and Alison invited me to a beginner class she was teaching that afternoon. That was about three years ago and I have been practicing regularly ever since. The staff at Shri studio have helped me change my life. Not only did yoga help my sleep and my over all stress level it gave me a boost in my other exercise routines. I have suffered many injuries throughout my life and the staff at Shri have always been able to help me modify in order to continue my practice. I have watched Shri grow over the last three years and I am proud to say I have been able to be a part of it. Shri studio is not only a wonderful place to practice yoga, it is a place that is helping build a better community through it's many outreach programs and bringing many wonderful people together. I've been going to Shri for almost a year now. I'd been looking for a studio where I can practice in peace and Shri has been perfect - the classes are small and there's room to stretch and breathe and be at ease in my practice. The atmosphere is gorgeous - soft sunlight streams through the windows, the floors are spotless, and the decor has a light touch that just seems to whisper "balance", "ease," and "grace". I've taken classes from a number of teachers at Shri, but always come back to Alison's Saturday morning class. She has us rate how we're feeling in the beginning of each class and it never fails that when I come in at a 5 out of 10, I always leave at a 10 out of 10! The class is vigorous yet balanced, and always ends with Alison playing the harmonium and singing - a wonderful treat! I think what I love best about the studio is its conscious focus on being in service of the community. Alison is as beautiful a person as she is a beautiful personality, and you can tell that all of her work is dedicated to improving the lives of the people in this community, from her teaching to her volunteer work in the area. I think that, more than anything, is what fills the studio with such positive energy. So if you're into feeling good AND feeling good about yourself, you've got to head over to Shri Studio in Pawtucket!! read more

I've been coming to Shri to practice for almost two years now. Beautiful, open loft space where you feel like you can really breathe, a wide variety of classes and styles on the roster, and my favorite: workshops with live music (everything from a live DJ to guitar to my personal favorite - a fiddle duo last year!). I really like the variety of instructors they have as well - though I prefer some over others as my regular teachers, I have to say that every one I have every dropped in on has been welcoming and accommodating. And I like the vibe at Shri: it's very friendly, open, and not super-serious or competitive like other places I've been. You can really get down into your practice and not feel self-conscious. What a great place to practice! Never really did yoga until I came here. The place is beautiful and huge. Weekends are generally packed and the classes are filled with great music and energy. I tried some of the classes during the week which were a little slower but great for me to learn and get comfortable. Over all I'd have to say that I'm hooked! Awful will never come here again! Avoid! Coming to Shri yoga I was expecting a delightful experience but what I got was the exact opposite. Went to Shri for a simple yoga class and was appalled by the performance of the instructor. The instructor, Jade, came stumbling into the room completely reeking of alcohol and slurring her words. Although she was clearly drunk she continued with the class. As expected because she was intoxicated her flow was awkward, unusual, and hard to follow. After putting up with this bullshit for 15 minutes or so me and a few others had to leave the class. Shri yoga was a complete waste of my time and money. Won't be coming back here again as long as that instructor is still working there! AVOID! AVOID! read more

I heard about Shri studio through one of the instructors, Caroline - at the time she was teaching at the Y in Providence where I was taking her class. I loved her class, and decided to venture to Shri for Alison's vinyasa class - and absolutely loved it! Shri is filled with friendly and warm community-oriented people. Going there week after week, you begin to make friends within the class and see how it is much more than just a studio. I can't think of a better way to relax and exercise at the same time! For the vinyasa classes at least, they are a great balance of sweating your butt off and opportunities for introspection. I also love Shri for the outreach work they are doing, particularly providing free yoga to schools in Pawtucket. I've actually gotten involved with some of their fundraising initiatives and find it's a great way to feel a part of something that is making a difference in others' lives. I have been practicing yoga for around 4 years. I go to studios all over Rhode Island since I practice at least 5 times a week. Shri is one of my favorite places - Shri is a community with teachers who bring yoga to everyone through Shri Service Corp. This is the arm of the studio that goes into the community and teaches yoga to people of all ages. Shri brings yoga to schools, women's shelters, recovery centers, the training school along with having adaptive yoga right in the studio. The teachers are great - they make you feel part of the community the second you walk in the door. Everytime I take a class at Shri, I know what I paid for class is going back to the community.
