We had yet another terrific experience here. It remains a true gem in a lovely little town. I…read morecontinue to keep a close eye on their show calendar, as I am always looking for a reason to return.

The Astra Theatre is a 357-seat historic theatre located in Jasper, Indiana that first opened in…read more1936 and was operated as a family-owned movie theatre for the next 66 years. Located directly on Main Street, the theatre was reconfigured to become a duplex cinema in the mid-80's. However, surviving in a world of multiplexes ended up being too tough and the Astra was closed in September, 2002. After a few years of interest followed by no action in claiming the Astra, Next Act, Inc. bought the theatre in 2015 and began a move toward restoration with a $400,000 historic preservation grant from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs followed by a $1.7 million major restoration in 2017-2018 that replaced all major infrastructure (electric to and throughout the building, plumbing, HVAC units and ductwork) while also allowing for the installation of a new accessible restroom on the first floor, an expanded stage, new seating throughout, re-opening the balcony, new sound and lights, a new men's restroom, a renovated women's restroom, a new concessions area, new doors, a refurbished marquee, new doors, refurbished windows, and more. I had heard of the Astra prior to its renovation, however, I'd never visited prior to a recent visit. Thus, I can't speak to the level of improvement other than nothing accessibility improvements are obvious. The Astra Theatre has 269 seats on the main floor and the balcony tends to only be opened when the actual need arises, though for reserved seating events they do make the balcony available. The second floor is not accessible. Accessibility features include an accessible restroom on the main floor, accessible seating toward the front of the theatre, and an accessible platform in the back. It's not perfect, but it's quite good for a historic theatre. The Astra has concessions at all events - Pepsi products along with the usual popcorn, candy, and chips. They do also have beer and wine available for those age 21+. They do accept cash or credit/debit cards. The Astra is not a regular movie theatre at this point, however, they do host movies, special events, comedy, and concerts. On my visit, it was for a movie screening but I've also heard good things about the Astra for other special events. I don't get to the Jasper area as much as I used to, but I'm a fan of historic theatres and am slowly getting myself to as many of Indiana's best theatres as I can. The Astra has operated for the past seven years utilizing volunteers. So, if you're expecting all the creature comforts of a multiplex think again. This is a historic theatre run by the community for the community and utilizing volunteers who are passionate about the space. They are friendly and helpful. If you're going for a special event, there are several hotels in the Jasper area at a variety of price points. The website tends to be updated when a new event is coming up. However, the Astra is also active on social media. I saw a statement on their website describing the Astra as a brand new 80+ year-old theatre and this sounds about right. With significant upgrades, the Astra is comfortable, beautiful, surprisingly accessible, and the kind of Indiana event space you should experience at least once. Southern Indiana is ideal for a day trip. Oh heck, make it a weekend and check out the Astra.

I went here last summer, for my very first drive in experience, & I absolutely loved it. Having…read morenever been to a drive in at the age of 26, I felt like a kid experiencing something new for the first time! At the time we went, my boyfriend had a truck, so we brought blankets & the two of us piled into the bed of his truck along with our two boys to watch the movies. It was great being able to have our own space, & not having to hear any other annoying people that tend to visit traditional theaters. I can imagine the experience is much better if you have a truck rather than a car, but there were quite a few people there in cars as well, & some even brought lawn chairs & set on the grass to watch the movie. Sound for the movies is provided through a station you can pick up on your own radio in your vehicle or you can pick up a small portable radio I believe at the concession stands. The best thing about this drive in is that at the price you would pay to see one movie in a normal theater, you get to watch two back to back at this drive in. It is $9 for adults, & $5 for ages 4-11. So children younger than 4 are free! They also have two concession stands with decent prices compared to a traditional theater, so you could actually afford to buy snacks & beverages! But, even better, you can bring in your own, which saves a lot of money! But, if you want to wait till you get there to get any kind of food, they offer so much more than a traditional theater. Besides the usual popcorn or nachos, they also serve burgers, hot dogs, corn dogs, fries, onion rings, soft pretzels, & even ice cream & sno-cones! If it is a cool night, you can even purchase coffee or hot chocolate. They have bathrooms as well. This is a cash only establishment though, for the concession stand as well as the ticket booth, so keep that in mind if planning a visit. I believe this place is a gem, & cannot wait for my second visit! Anyone who has never been to a drive in should definitely go, at least once! The experience is well worth it. Maybe bring some bug spray, if you are like me, cause the mosquitos love to eat me up!

It was built in 1926,…read moreand features period architecture, ornate molded plaster capitols, decorated beams, a full featured stage, period sconce lighting, a full service concession area, large lobby. There is some street parking right in front or you can park along a side street. This theatre is such a cool old building and just recently they have been doing some remodeling on the main floor and putting in new floors and new seats. It wasn't quite completed when we were there but are very thankful that they allowed us to have the main floor anyway. They offer movies for families or groups where you can have the entire theatre to yourself. It was such a nice experience to be able to do this with extended family. Normally they reserve the upstairs theatre for this but we let them know that we had someone in a wheelchair and so they made every effort to have the main floor ready so we could use it. The concessions are typical movie theatre with the awesome buttery popcorn and boxed candy, nachos, drinks... oh and they offer free refills! Kind of something that is unheard of nowadays! Overall this is a great place to go see a movie and we will definitely be back.

I'm not sure how some can complain so much about a movie theater when it is the only movie theater…read morein town. Yes, I'm sure it is not as nice as other places in bigger cities, however being a small town girl from an even smaller town that had no theater whatsoever, this one suits me just fine for the rare occasion I can actually afford to go see a movie. That is my biggest problem with going out to the movies, cost. I'm lucky if I see more than one new movie a year out at the theater because it is just so expensive! Forget about getting anything from the crazy over priced concession stand. Unless you're a millionaire, I guarantee that popcorn and soda are not worth it! Which is why I do sneak my own drink in, I mean, who doesn't? As others have stated, it is not the cleanest place, but it's also not as bad as others make it sound either. Yes, I have seen popcorn on the floors. But that's about it. People are messy. I have never sat in a sticky chair and the bathrooms have never been as horrid as some claim them to be. Of course I did just say I'm lucky to enjoy a movie once a year, however I used to go out to see at least one movie a month before my son was born, back when I still had money. One of my favorite things about this place is the credit card ticket machine. You can bypass any long lines at the employee manned ticket booth by using the ticket machine next to it that accepts credit/debit cards. So again, this place is nothing special. It's a little run down & could definitely use a remodel. The seats aren't the most comfortable & for anyone who gets cold easily, be sure to wear a light jacket. I always freeze in here! It may not be like anything you'd find in a big city, but for us small town folk, it serves it's purpose. It's a place to go to see a new movie. Goodness, all the movie dates I've had to this place, it's a place of nostalgia for me!
