Currently Landing is in its growth phase. I'm not sure the hotel has a lot of guests yet so it was fairly empty while, we were also there on a rainy night. We went there before a Knucklehead's show, which allowed us to just hop down the road conveniently. So don't overlook this if you're headed to the East Bottoms for some live music. While the food was good, this will definitely be a little better ambience with a good crew, soccer game, or weekend. Food was delicious. Pork belly bites were cooked to perfection, fries perfectly crispy, the grilled cheese sandwich was still good even left over the next day!! So, so good. With that said, I took off a star because while it was empty, the bartender was not the friendliest. We were asking about the menu, deciding between choices and he was rolling his eyes and loudly sighing, like we were inconveniencing him. Meanwhile, there were zero people in the other area of the restaurant, and all of the patrons were sitting at the bar. Maybe 6-10 max? There were two of us girls. I'm not gonna say he was hired because of muscles and being good looking... But I'm going to say customer service isn't his forté, rubbed us wrong when excited to try a new place. Show Pony was exactly what I needed when I needed it. I stopped in on a Thursday evening while I was waiting for a tow truck to come in the area. The restaurant is attached to a hotel but had a ton of different seating options. I had planned to stay for a while, but our tow arrived unexpectedly early. The bartender and kitchen staff were amazing and changed our order to carry out, put a rush on the food, and gave us the check. I ordered a chicken quesadilla and even as take out it was so good. There was a ton of chicken and cheese inside and even some vegetables (I think pico). I would definitely return and the friendly staff knocked it out of the park! read more

We checked into Origin Hotel around 3:30, JJ who checked us in told us the Show Pony Bar opened at 4pm for Happy Hour. We popped in for a quick cocktail before heading out for Shinedown concert. We sat up at the bar top where there were a few other guests. I ordered a Moscow Mule which was good, my sister ordered a Paloma which I thought was pretty good as well and our friend ordered a Mojito. They do have appetizers which unfortunately we did not get to try but the Butnt Ends w/Mac and Cheese caught my eye-I'll prob go back just to try some food! The bartender that served us was polite and friendly. The atmosphere of Show Pony was fun and had a good vibe to it. There were some bar games in the area-foosball, shuffle board and TV's around the front of the bar. They had a lounge area off to the side of the bar, patio area and dining area. They do serve breakfast, we tried it out the next morning- I believe they serve breakfast 6:30am-10am, it is Not a continental breakfast which I think some guest were looking around to see the next morning. I ordered a coffee which was a bit strong for my liking and then I tried the Biscuits & Gravy that also had potatoes with it. It was delicious-no complaints on the gravy or biscuit, good consistency with nice chunks of sausage and biscuit was light and fresh, the potatoes were tasty as well. We will def be back! read more

Food: Arancini, I really loved these--the perfect amount of sauce for complimenting the texture of the breadcrumbs. I would order again. Cacio e Pepe, you won't catch me ordering pasta often, but this dish was excellent. Enjoyed the flavors of the cheese and pepper. I want to enjoy this one again. Pork Cheek with grits. I love how they prepped the girts; they are very fluffy and flavorful while not overpowering the rest of the dish. The pork bites were delicious- keeping with our love in KC for doing meat well. Affogato was ordered for dessert, I typically like more of a chocolate dessert experience than what this gave me, but enjoyed the nuts with the ice cream, it was a dish that I enjoyed trying, but would not order again. Ambiance: This place feels upscale and quirky, similar to other River Market stops, making this part of the metro so fun. Service: At the time of my visit, they had been open for around 2 months for a new spot; I was pleasantly surprised with the service. Being a new spot with Restaurant week provides its on challenges and this spot delivered. Attached to Hotel: I also stayed at the conjoined hotel for the night and loved how the dining experience flowed right into a bar experience and then into the hotel space for the evening. This made it an excellent spot for a girl's night getaway while never leaving one location in the freezing Kansas City winter. I am very excited to see this area of the City continue to develop. We had a great server, Edward. He made our dining experience. The food is fine. The seasoning was just a little off for me. There were dishes that needed salt and some that were too salty. I needed more balance between the sweetness in a few dishes. The chickpea gnocchi themselves were so good, fried perfectly and soft inside. The Cobia wrapped in Swiss chard was good. Cooked well, but the mulled wine sauce was too much for me. I think they are really just trying to figure themselves out and we went during restaurant week. I will go back this spring/summer for the patio and to see how the food has evolved. read more

There haven't been many reviews since opening and many have been mixed. However we decided to take the leap and book for restaurant week due to the menu intriguing us! We are so grateful we came and hope Show Pony gets more positive attention in the future. We had heard that service may be a little slow. We noticed that many of the staff was new, but they were all hustling and doing great! We were also surprised by how quickly we received our drinks and food--all in all we were here for around 2 hours for drinks and 4 courses. Someone had previously complained about that speed, so it's all relative. We were enjoying each other's company and the ambiance and had wonderful conversations with our server, so it felt like the time really flew by! Drinks: can't remember the names. One was limoncello and Prosecco and the other was the "peanut butter and jelly" cocktail. Both were great. Added on the milk bread and that came out with our drinks and was a great add on while we were waiting for our food (maybe that's why it didn't seem like we waited as long?) We ordered the arancini and eggplant hummus as entrees and enjoyed both! I typically don't enjoy baba ganoush due to the texture, but the added whole roasted garlic added great flavor and texture. The arancini had a little spicy kick to it (not very spicy though) which I wasn't expecting and loved the added flavor. We then ordered the cacio e Pepe and bolognese. I typically don't like bolognese, but this was the best one I've ever tried! I regretted that we both didn't order it. They have it cooking all day and the flavor profile made it very apparent. For mains we ordered the Cobia and Pork Cheek. I had heard mixed reviews of the Cobia--the server said most people who didn't like it were expecting a flaky pan seared fish. I eat lots of seafood though and don't really have anything I dislike. It blew away my expectations! Loved the plating. The fish doesn't have a strong flavor, nor does the rutabaga, but the leek and mulled wine base made the textures and flavors flow together seamlessly! It was definitely my favorite course of the night--a really great dish that you won't find anything similar to at most places in Kansas City. The pork cheek was so smoky and tender. The grits were creamy and the apple was sweet. Once again, a very thought out dish that blended colors, presentation and flavors very well. We would love to return for the full size options of both in the future! Lastly was dessert: we ordered the affogato and carrot cake. We both unanimously liked the carrot cake much better haha. This was our only let down of the night. Would have preferred a more traditional affogato, but did enjoy the crunchy bits and the interesting take on it. However, we wouldn't order again! The carrot cake came with a ginger sorbet that contrasted nicely! Very interesting tasting experience as we had never had a sorbet quite like it before. Overall had a really great experience and would recommend Show Pony to any foodie who values plates with complex flavors and an emphasis on plating. read more

Show Pony was a really nice experience! This was our choice for restaurant week and I'm glad we went. Some dishes were better than others, but I see real charm and potential here. First impressions: the atmosphere is nice, not too casual and not too formal. The service was VERY friendly and I felt our server did a fantastic job describing the dishes and giving recommendations. There was also someone else who seemed very knowledgeable on the wines to give my wife a great recommendation based on her preference. Everyone was great. For my selections from the restaurant week menu: We started with the milk bread. This was really a basic roll to me with pretty standard butter. I was pretty disappointed that this was a $10 add on given the bland flavor profile. The arancini was cooked very well. I enjoyed it but wish there was more thought into the flavor on the inside. The Cacio e Pepe was very good! My main was the Ocean Blue Cobia. Wow, what a creative dish! I've never had anything like it so I really appreciated that and the presentation was great. Overall, we had a good experience! Some area for improvement on flavor but I'm definitely rooting for them and would come back to try more of their food. read more

I'm staying at the hotel and sat at the bar. Service was great. I ate the hamburger sliders and sweet potato fries. Both were cooked perfectly. It was a slow Tuesday night. I'm sure it's just tough to manage the spikes in customer volume. I've stayed at several similar hotel/restaurant combos. These guys are ahead of most. This was my second visit to Show Pony, and I'm already looking forward to the next! Nestled along the Berkley Riverfront near the KC Current stadium, this spot has such a fresh, vibrant vibe--definitely an up-and-coming area to keep an eye on. This time, I dined outside, soaking in the atmosphere with a dirty martini and the pork belly appetizer, which was so generously portioned it easily worked as a shared entrée for my husband and me. The sweet and spicy glaze on the smoky pork belly was absolutely delicious--bold, rich, and memorable. My only critique: the martini was a little too salty, which overpowered the usual balance I love. On my previous visit, I tried the slider flight (amazing!) and the flatbread, which unfortunately didn't hit the mark--it was somewhat deconstructed and lacking in flavor. But not every dish can be a star, and Show Pony's highlights make it easy to forgive the misses. One thing that's been consistently excellent: the service. Show Pony is the restaurant and bar inside the newly opened Origin Hotel in Berkley Park. It bills itself as a locally sourced, chef driven restaurant serving breakfasts, dinners and brunch on weekends. The space is a nice blend of casual elegance in the dining room with a large bar area with TV's, shuffleboards, and table games and an outdoor patio with an adjacent carousel horse fountain with views of CPKC Stadium, the iconic Bond Bridge and Berkley Park and within a couple of years, a streetcar stop. I ordered the Okonomiyaki - a grilled veggie pancake, topped with a sunny egg and mushroom XO sauce - fabulous! My coffee was from Messenger. I was the only one in the restaurant on a Sunday at noon, but I would expect that to change rapidly once the word gets out. Game Days for the KC Current should be a money maker for them. read more

I reallllly wanted to love this place but after a visit for happy hour/early dinner last night, I think there is some work to do here. I will say - the space is really pretty and the menu widely varied. I also appreciated that the service was mucj more prompt (and friendly!) than some other reviews have noted. But the food was inconsistent and disappointing. We liked our cheese ring appetizer, but the Japanese milk bread was a huge letdown, with no more taste than your average dinner roll from Hy Vee. Similarly, my grilled cheese bites were decent, but the fries that I ordered as well were not fully heated/cooked through. As a fry lover, this was such a downer, how do you mess up fries?! Friends got a burger (good, but similar issue with the fries), and a naan pizza (loved the concept but was not impressed with the execution). This might have all been more palatable were there any kind of happy hour prices......but there aren't. So with two shared apps and three of the less expensive bar entrees (not even off the dinner menu!) between us, plus four total drinks (one a mocktail), MY third was $50 before tip. Today I paid $39 with tax and tip for two full lunches and a latte at McLain's and the difference in quality was stark. Show Pony needs to pick up the pace if they expect to make it to the finish line (truly sorry for this snark and rooting for them to improve)! read more

I tried a few appetizers and only liked the arancini. I could not find the drink menu on the website which contributes to the feel of them not being ready for service. This place looks really cool when you walk in. There is a large and nice bar area with several TVs and even a skee ball game. We had made reservations for a party of 4... we showed up a couple of minutes before our reservation time, but unfortunately there seemed to be some sort of seating debacle causing the host confusion. Mind you, the restaurant wasn't completely full, but we were left standing around for about 5 minutes until they finally figured out where to seat us. Once we sat down, we were given a brief overview of their restaurant week menu. They said I could sub eggplant for the schnitzel to do the 4 course menu. My party decided to start with a bottle of wine (their wine menu is not extensive so we shared a bottle of Zinfandel). It was clear that our server was newer and doesn't open many bottles. He apologized, but it did make quite a drippy mess on our table. My 4 course meal started with the winter greens salad (delicious), followed by the chickpea gnocchi (good but a little salty), followed by the "schnitzel" which was subbed for a battered/fried eggplant patty (very greasy and salty, topped with some greens that looked like they came out of a coleslaw salad kit), and finally the carrot cake (a good but small dessert about the size of a macaron). It did take quite a bit of time for our food to come out. Our server was attentive. I am not sure if my experience would have been better during a regular week, but I just wasn't that impressed with the food. For the price, I could have had a nicer dinner elsewhere. That being said, I think I would give it another try once they have been open longer (they've only been around about 3 months). They do have several vegetarian friendly options. Fabulous restaurant that deserves to be much better known. Sure, it's out of the way, but so worth it as a destination. Both the bar and restaurant deserve top marks for creativity, warmth and customer service. Tony at the bar makes the most creative cocktails with great care, and the chef in the restaurant has an inventive flair that will blow your socks off. We had the kale Caesar salad, which was perfect with whole anchovies and a refreshingly subtle black garlic dressing, and then shared the lamb shank tacos, with a phenomenal mole sauce. The wine list was short but varied and thoughtful; we had the chianti, which worked well not only with the lamb but also, to our surprise, with dessert. We had the garnacha; who knew that tarragon goes so well with and counterbalanced the chocolate and cream and strawberries? Visit as soon as you can. This chef is going places. read more

The Cacio e Pepe flavor was spot-on--really delicious! The noodles were undercooked though, which threw it off a bit (Maybe they make them fresh in house? I've had noodle made in house tho and they were not tough like these were) The steak was cooked perfectly, and the broccoli gremolata was surprisingly really good (our favorite of the night). The fries had way too much lemon and the aioli was okay--great concept, just a bit overdone. The flavors are exactly balanced it's like they get a bunch right and then one thing makes it not as good. Overall, it feels like they've got the right ideas, just need to fine-tune the execution (totally fair since they're still new). We ordered food to-go since we were staying at the hotel, but grabbed a couple drinks at the bar while we waited (The drinks were not good, I had a mule so that may be on me). The vibe was chill and lowkey--not too busy--and the space itself looked nice. One thing that really stood out: the skee ball machine. It was incredibly loud and felt super out of place in a restaurant like this, it's attached to a hotel so I get it but it should not be in a restaurant like that. Might be better off tucked into a game room or on the hotel side. Waited 30 min for our first course, probably another 30 for our second course and 45 for our main course. While we were eating our main course the dessert came. Felt like we were being rushed out. We had an exquisite dining experience with five other couples in the private dining room at Show Pony last night! Chef Michael Olson was fantastic, explaining each dish and highlighting many of the local ingredients. The Smoked Short Rib, Chicken Crown, Pakora and Long Stem Broccoli were particularly delicious. Chef was also very accommodating of my wife with gluten and dairy issues - She did not come away disappointed as is often the case when trying to navigate a new menu.
