Hey guys. I am a current student at Shore Beauty School and I'd like to inform you on some of the things that happen daily. Although we've moved to a brand new and beautiful location, the school is still ran by the same poorly educated and dysfunctional "team". In the old school, their "mission" was to make us ace the State Board exams by having us practice what the State Board required us to do every other day. Now, it seems that the clients have taken over that importance and the teachers along with the office staff are more worried about the clients. It's obvious that the money is more important than their students.
For example, if you were to leave or forget an item on top of your locker, you will get fined 25 dollars. Another ridiculous "rule" is that we have BATHROOM PASSES.
As if to say to us that we act like children, therefore we must be disciplined the same.
It's extremely obvious that in their minds we are not adults.
They are short staffed and almost EVERYDAY they are running around like the worlds about to end trying to take care of what they can. There have been instances where I've waited entirely too long to get something from one of the teachers so that I can take care of my client. It displays lack of management and professionalism.
We also have a wonderful array of nail polishes ranging from 1 to 4 years old. Those lovely gems are thrown together in a plastic container with no display of care or thought.
This may seem like a rant, but if you were to pay a school 15k to educate you in the world of cosmetology and discover that, although they've been "educating countless cosmetologist for over 30 years", sometimes it feels like they've just opened up the place.
It's frustrating to say the least. The way the classes are set up are sub par as well.
The first month you're with one teacher. She teaches you the basics for that month and then you move on. The second month is the same. You get taught other basic things and then you move on. After the second month, you're what they call an "upper junior". Here you learn more advanced and more fun things. You also start to learn about the State Board Practical Exam and you practice it as well. Once you hit the "senior floor" (which is about 3 months with the 3rd teacher) the State Board you thought you knew changes dramatically. On the senior floor you learn the "right" way. The way they taught you in the junior rooms was totally incorrect. Since you're on the senior floor well now you get to learn the right way.
Believe me, this is probably the most frustrating. After all those months of learning and practicing what you thought was the correct way, they tell you it's wrong.
There are many things wrong with this school, but not all is negative.
The last thing that I want to talk about negatively is the office staff.
They are the most fake and most disrespectful people I think I've ever met.
If you needed help, they would make you feel like they're doing you a favor by even listening to you. They are rude and ignorant almost all the time. It's a shame too. The one person who was nice and LOVED to help out students was fired. Coincidence? Not likely.
I have a short story for you. Back at the old school, the area surrounding it was, for lack of a better word, ghetto. One day my car was broken into stealing my mp3 player and breaking my passenger side window in the process.
The next day I called the office staff and told them what had happened and I asked why they didn't have a parking lot. When the car being broken into she said, and I quote, "Well maybe next time you should have the windows rolled down so they don't have to break your window when they steal something."
Like I said, fake and disrespectful to say the least. Their attitudes alone are what brought me to write this review.
The upside to this review are the teachers. None are incompetent or lack the knowledge to properly educate you. Some are more educated than others, but all know the basics and are more than willing to show you how to apply the technique. I love all of the teachers there, whether for their knowledge or their personality.
If the school didn't treat you like children instead of paying adults. And if the office staff weren't from menopause hell. And if the owner of the school knew ONE thing about hair. And if there was mutual respect between students and teachers. And if they didn't portray the fact that the clients are more important than the students. And if all of them actually gave a damn, I'd give it 3 stars maybe. read more
