Half an Oreo cake from their bakery
    Darren W.

This is another colossal, spotless, exhaustively stocked Shop N Save that I hadn't been to in a good while before today. Kay wanted chocolate cake worse than Bill Cosby's kids... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZlCPQur4hc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuamlBQ2aW4&feature=related She also wanted pizza! No, this was for dinner, and NO, she is not pregnant. What to do? I recalled that a Shop N Save is along the way to Castle Shannon's Pizza Company being that my sister worked there briefly sometime during the mid-90's. A trio of 2 liter Pepsi bottles=$4. Half of a spongy, moist chocolate-batter cake with Oreo rubble as garnish and iced with a fantastic, alabaster buttercream frosting that I suspect had some Oreo filling in it=$8. My prejudice against supermarket "bimbo" confections has been challenged for this cake had substance, and I regret not photographing some of the other amazing-to-behold creations that teased me behind glass. This SNS is open 24/7 to boot. So say no to Wal-Mart if you need food at an odd hour and instead, turn onto that winding road on Castle Shannon Boulevard to that big, big grocery in the sky...or on the knob, hill, dale, whatever it is. What? You expect eloquence and poetry in a review of a supermarket? Alrighty. *takes deep breath* Her sign was a crimson beacon of convenience on a Sunday evening that was heavy with sorrow o'er a Steelers loss and as chilled as a daiquiri made for a lonely, bitter divorcee. Her peak jabbed into the inky sky above. Her high ceilings seemed to go on into eternity. Her parking lot was a sea of asphalt. When we entered, we felt at peace, as if the patron saints of shopping were welcoming us into the golden gates of Heaven where God is benevolent and knows how to eyeball produce...

Our go-to grocery store minutes from home. Always clean and stocked. Great bakery and produce. Best fish fry you can get anywhere!

No, I am not pregnant. I NEEDED chocolate cake, bad, and they had it. It's a huge, clean store, and the cashier was funny.

Is this the weekend when the Castle Shannon Store has their own Friday and Saturday Store Specials?

Not this weekend, however, they have the $1 sale going on thru May 2nd. For example, USDA boneless pork roasts are $1/lb and the fabulous butchers, Frank or George, will cut-to-order them for you. Also they have a lot of other $1 buys to stock up… Read more

Inside it is a standard Aldi but they do have the Aldi finds (the aisle of shame!) which you cannot find at every Aldi. My experience with their produce and meats has been very good; I have bought their hamburgers several times and found them to be excellent in quality. Checkout is pretty quick; there are no self-scan registers in this store (that would be nice) but I have never waited in line more than a few minutes. Given its location, the excellent prices, and that aisle of shame, I will be here often.

I also appreciate the fair return policy, if something is wrong they refund your money and also you can replace the item. They don't give you any grief if you need to return something like Giant Eagle. They have certainly expanded their selection and the quality has always been good. The only issue is that the items come and go just like Trader Joe's. I love the hummus chips that pop up every once in a while, but then they go away quickly. I have always loved the fact that they never use plastic bags, which is very sustainable. It is very good to have them in the neighborhood. Please note: if you park out in the front you will not be able to transport your groceries in a cart out to your car. The store is wired so that the cart gets locked up if you try to leave out of the front door. This can suck if the back parking lot is full.

First time I've been here since they finished renovating market square. It is such an improvement!…read moreNo more ankle twisting cobblestone. It's been replaced with smooth brick. The square has a covered area now too, with lots of seating so it can be enjoyed year round. There's so many great restaurants and cafes around the square, and there's expanded outdoor dining at a lot of the restaurants, as well.

Market Square is a public space in the downtown area with a variety of shops and restaurants…read moresurrounding it. It was recently renovated just in time for the NFL Draft to allow more accessibility and better space for events. In the public area, there are some tables and chairs to sit and enjoy the area. They also seem to plan to have a lot more semi-permenant attractions in the space. Currently their is a roller rink (which is surprisingly affordably priced) . It has historically been home to the Holiday Market (which was moved into the theater area this year because of the construction). I hope the market does move back because Market Square was definitely the better space for it. There is plenty of parking nearby in garages, surface lots and street parking. The one downside is that it is really tough to drive through, especially with the way the renovated it. Drivers seem to be stopping to take in the new look or don't understand directional signage so there is often traffic backups.
