They have some great, simple/short trails to the left of the main hatchery buildings. Being more of a nature trail, it is not as involved as some of the other hikes you can encounter in Colorado, so to me this is a great option for families with kids or anyone not wanting to commit a full-day to a hiking trip. There are some mild inclines, but nothing over-the-top. I think the trail we took ended up taking an hour, but we were in full-on exploring mode and reading/looking at everything. There is a lot of educational signage on the trails and around the hatchery property, and the setting around the area is beautiful. The hatchery is cool, too - but for me, the highlight is everything else.

Got to learn about not only the fish, but the pants and flowers that were in the area on the way to see the fish.

Leadville vied against Denver for the capital of Colorado. But the historical events, strategies, travel and the shuffling for rights of control and ownership started right here at Matchless Mine. We did a guided tour and our tour guide was a bit different in his approach to the stories behind the mine and Leadville. Very intriguing the similarity of the women back than and the women of today. They were very prominent in the development of this vast area. Very interesting and grabbing how the lives of these people all entwined to deliver a booming town and it's people. It is about 1 1/2 miles outside downtown Leadville and I think it's over-rated. There are 2 admission prices -- $6 per person ($5 for kids) for the self-guided tour or $10 per person for a guided tour. We were too late for the last guided tour of the day and opted for the $6 self-guided tour. There are 3 or 4 buildings (2 that you can actually walk into) and about 8-10 placards with descriptions of the mining operation and about Baby Doe. One building was the cabin where Baby Doe spent the final years of her life and included some pictures and a copy of her death certificate. You really didn't learn too much about Baby Doe from the displays in the cabin - her story was better told on one of the placards. The other building you could get inside had some displays of old mining equipment and tools but - again - not a whole lot of useful information. You learned more from the signs. Other buildings included a power magazine that you could look into and a couple of non-descript and otherwise unidentified shacks. Maybe the guided tour would have provided more information but by the end of my self-guided tour, I was glad I hadn't paid the extra $4 for the guided tour.

This is a very well curated museum with great exhibits housed in old homes and cabins and buildings that were brought in and add an air of authenticity that is remarkable. In some of the buildings I felt like I had walked into a movie set and expected to find Quentin Tarantino lurking with a cast of nefarious characters.
