    Rollin on the River
    Amber H.

Visited on a Friday afternoon when it was less crowded...My bf and I had a good time, and the majority of the staff was very nice and helpful. We just had a couple of staff members (young boys) that weren't helpful at all. We watched as they helped the group in front of us, and as it was time for us to get into the water, they walked right by us...I stopped them to ask for help, and they wouldn't look our way. Finally the young lady in their group stopped to help. All in all, we had a good time...they just need to educate all staff members abt customer service.

Kayaking into the smaller streams off the main river -- by the recommendation of the Shoot the Hooch staff. A lovely detour!

I'm surprised to see so many negative reviews... I've been here twice now, first time to rent a double kayak and second time to rent a stand up paddle board, and both times things have gone really smoothly. It was easy enough: I called ahead of time to make sure they had what I wanted available. Then showed up and filled out some paperwork, paid, picked up paddles and lifejackets, and went into the water. I wouldn't say the staff were rude but they're definitely not warm and fuzzy. Still, they got the job done and were helpful when I asked questions. For example, the boat guy let me leave my sandals with him while I took the paddle board out from their beach. Also the girl at the front desk gave me a cushion of thirty minutes to get out on the water in terms of the hour I had paid for. I thought that was nice and very reasonable. They are a bit pricey but if it's a one time novelty thing or you're in town visiting it's not a big deal. It would only get super expensive if you're going back again and again. Just some tips: if you plan on paying by the hour it's helpful to bring some sort of clock out there on the water with you. If this is going to be your phone, bring a water tight sack. And otherwise I recommend a watch or something so you can know when your hour is up and to return to the beach.

I've done about 20 trips down the hooch and this company is the WORST. No organization at bus pick up location and things were extremely chaotic. There is no designated front of the line while waiting for a bus to be transported to the drop off. Each driver would pick up at a slightly different location which caused me to miss about 5 busses. People were pushing and rushing to the bus before us. My friend got elbowed in the face. Once we finally got on the bus, the driver ate food for about 10 minutes before taking off after everyone loaded onto the but. In total I wasted an 1 1/2 hours from my purchased ticket time waiting to be in line to pick up my tube (not even on the water). To top everything off, our bus broke down and my day was ruined: Avoid his company at all cost!!!!!!!!! Go with Nantahala Outdoors instead.

Park was a little muddy due to rain from the day before

Great to work with, and everyone was very friendly! I love that they have trip options available with a shuttle that takes you to the starting point.

Where do we put all our stuff? Are there locker rentals?

I don't recall there being lockers. I recommend either bringing a water tight sack or leaving most things in the trunk of your car. They will watch your less valuable stuff like shoes at the beach if you ask.

This area is federal land with parking pass fee or use your annual/lifetime pass. First, the confusing part. Getting there! There is small sign or Akers Mill (see my picture) and it does not refer to it as West Palisades, even though all the markers inside the park say that. The intersections in the park on the trails are indicated as WP1, WP2, WP3, ... So to navigate go from one junction to another. There is handy wooden trail map at every junction. Trail names are non existent. Parking lot off Akers Mill is large and paved, but no bathrooms (WP12). Another large parking lot off Cobb Parkway has bathrooms (WP1). Also the park connects to county parks along Rottenwood Creek, which gives additional options. These are paved and more oriented towards bicycles. We did an 8 mile hike here. Starting at WP12. Hiking trails through the woods and along the river, back and forth with some decent elevation. When we got to WP1 we hiked along the Rottenwood Creek trail back to Akers Mill. At that point we walked along the road back to the parking area. Very nice combo of woods, paved paths, sidewalks. This was after Hurricane Zeta, so a lot of blow down on the trails but we were able to get around it. (See pics). A good workout! This was during covid and midweek, busy but not too bad. Have been here on the weekend and lots of folks, but plenty of parking and with the large size of the area plenty of space between groups hiking. Great area near the metropolitan area.

These natural parklands are a good place for walking, running, biking, kayaking and fly fishing! Ambiance is a natural park in the edge of a bustling city flanked by urban infrastructures...not manicured, full of bushes, trees, streams and the river with huge concrete overpasses. It's a good location to visit nature ITP. Here's the DL. About 1/3 of the paved trails and 3/4 of the unpaved trails are canopied with rolling elevation (~900 feet). Here, you could stroll a peaceful couple of miles and trail run moderate 5 - 8 miles. The paved trails are well marked and easy to navigate. But, the undeveloped trails are NOT with limited signs /blazes. Most unpaved trails are in the forest and have limited views of the river. Some parts are ridden with roots, loose rocks and boulders so wear proper shoes. When you do go on undeveloped trails, please "leave NO trace". There's a small ruin in the middle of the parklands but is unmarked, very steep with heavy over-growth. Biking is allowed ONLY on paved trails. Fly-fishing, I see when the water level is lower with slower currents. Encounters with trail blocking gumps occur here on weekends. Sunday strollers with NO self-awareness, blocking both sides, leisurewear selfie posers blocking trails and some parking themselves in the middle of an unpaved trail... :-/ Dogs on leash. There is No Maid service here to picks up your duty bag(s). There's a trash bin specifically for pets at the parking lot so pack out your 4 legged kids' mess paw-leash! Self-service...there are a few picnic tables, benches, animal proof trash bins, bathrooms, water fountains at the trail head and a boat ramp adjacent to the parking lot (off Cobb PKY / 41) for boats and kayaks. Next to the bathrooms there's a leveled grass area for Frisbees or other group games. Occasionally, I've seen CCP riding bicycles or electric motorcycles here as 2PDs are nearby. Parking is $3/day or $35/year and has about 60+ spots. Drive slowly...it's not the smoothest lot. Pay at the trailhead next to the boat ramp and the bathrooms. Be sure to display the perforated paper on your dash as rangers regularly check and ticket. These 4 nature areas are great if you are looking to workout with elevation changes in varying terrains...wood, boulders, concrete, mud, loose rocks, dirt...with views of the forest, streams and river at a nearby location. Enjoy!

The employees were very young and lackadaisical. I am not blaming them for the state of the river, but they should have equipped us with oars and at least prepped us on the very rocky ride and how shallow the water would be on the river. They basically took our money, gave us the tubes, and sent us on our way. There are three tubing outfits that work from this location, so the river is overcrowded and we ended up hitting into many other parties during our ride. Our goal was to chill and float as we had before on our tubing trips, but we ended up getting stuck on rocks for most of the time. When I tried to move off a rock during one of the many occasions where we got stuck, I ended up hitting my knee against a sharp rock and bled. Again, oars would have been helpful. When we arrived at the platform, the young guy who worked for the outfit just stood there and didn't assist the Urban Currents customers trying to get up on the platform, etc. and he didn't direct us towards to shuttle ride. I don't recommend this outfit or any other outfits in this area. It isn't relaxing and it is way too crowded.

As an active river type, my boyfriend and I decided to pack up and head out to Rome for a day on…read morethe river. Our expectations were simple: Tubes, music, and enjoying each others company. We put in the information for our GPS for River Ratz, only to be met with an old, dilapidated building beside the tracks. Come to find out, this was not the right location. So, we put in another address, which then took us to the drop off, still no place to pay. At this point, we're frustrated, so we ask the gentlemen there at the drop off "Where do we actually pay for this float?" He gives us the address, and yet again, we start another journey. We finally get to this bar called Cosmic Dog. The 'place to pay' was a pop up tent on a sidewalk that was leeching off of the Cosmic Dogs parking lot. The attendant was really sweet and personable. With that said, we quickly learned that at 11:00... they already sold out all of their equipment. We just drove an hour, to three locations, to find this place. She reached out to her team and she said they would get back to her. After 30 minutes, we come back to the tent and learn that she still hadn't heard anything. We asked her to check again, and come to find out, they could squeeze us in. We were happy to hear this, and decided to stick around. At 12:18, an hour and some change later, the 'shuttle' (which was an out transport van that sounded like it was about to break down) came to pick us up and drop us off where we'd just been a little over an hour before they picked us up. FINALLY, we get to the water. We're given two tubes, two life vests, and we're offered a tube for our cooler. We denied the additional tube and asked for straps to connect to one another. Apparently that was against the rules, even though they wanted us to strap the cooler tube to our tubes... After 2 hours of trying to get on the water, we finally get down the boat ramp (which is public access), and we get in.... The flow of the river was exhaustingly slow, you are in the heat of the sun for anywhere from 3-5 hours, and there are hardly any places to stop. We understand that this had nothing to do with the company, just nature. BUT.... Over the course of our 5 hours float, my boyfriends tube deflated 3 times, where we had to stop and inflate it on the bank of the river that did not exist. We paid $41 dollars for this... you'd think that the tubes would be good enough to withstand a gruelingly slow float down the river. At the end of the float, you have to 'stick to the right' or you will 'go bye bye' down the wrong side of the river. You have to get off at this boat ramp (also public access) that is surrounded by extremely deep water until you get up to the ramp. You hand a gentleman your tube, and then walk 'a couple blocks' back to your car. Ultimately, our first experience with this business was very underwhelming. It was unsafe, seemed like they threw the entire operation together in less than 24 hours, and then you get off of the river into the middle of a public boat launch. Not to mention the deflating tube that we paid $20 a piece for... and the exhaustingly slow float. ---------------------- If you are looking for a nice, comfortable float that offers some shade... take an extra hour drive up north and hit up the original tubing joints in Helen. If you are looking to kayak/ SUP, RIVER RATZ is the PERFECT PLACE FOR YOU. But us, we will never visit here again. Thank you for the experience and we hope you all the best, but our first impression just didn't work out well. ------------------ If you would like to have a better impression on your new patrons, post your current status on your website. Let people know that you are sold out. Get a safer, bigger van OR BUS. Let people tie their floats together. Recommend bringing paddles or ores to gain some speed on the float. Or just offer kayaking and stand up paddle boarding.

When they tell you to count the bridges and after the 5th one to get to the right, they mean it!! After the 5th bridge, the water starts flowing backwards and it is difficult to get over to exit. I literally got out of my tube, swam and pulled the tube to the side. When they ask if you want to take a paddle, the answer is YES! And, I suggest getting 1 paddle per person. When they ask if you want a strap to connect the tubes, the answer is YES!! We had 2 people in floats and a cooler in the 3rd float, I recommend 3 straps so you are in a circle and not a straight line. You can take a cooler and I recommend going early and renting the cooler float for $10. The team that helped us at check in, into the river and out of the river were nothing but professional. I would do this trip again and would book again with River Ratz.

The fast pass was likely worth it, although it only worked for some rides. The cabana was nice for the shade and having a home base, but it was kind of expensive for what you got. The lounge chairs with umbrella are probably a better value. The negatives that affected my rating follow. Some of the rides weren't open with no explanation. There was a shortage of tubes for the lazy river. About 10 minutes to closing, we were abruptly told the ride we were in line for was closed, after we'd been waiting awhile, with no explanation. And of course there was no time to get to another ride at that point. Food and drink lines were long and service painfully slow - I must have waited in line for 2 hours that day, which of course cut into ride time plus it's unpleasant in the heat. Maybe I missed them, but I never found a bottle filler or water fountain anywhere, making it necessary to wait in the super long lines to get our water bottles filled. And the food and drinks were pricey and meh, as expected in a theme park. We had fun overall but there's definitely room for operations to be improved at this water park.
