Told me over the phone that they mix and master; did not. I felt rushed but the two vocal recordings I recorded, I was told , were useless... after I emailed/ called several times to get my files. So sad. Never mixed or mastered. Money, time, effort later- I have to start from a scratch. A true bummer, I truly wanted to work with them; I am not sure where I went wrong... I think their engineer Drew is o overworked perhaps. They suggested after the fact that they are only a recording studio, that I must ho elsewhere for mastering... ahhh, what can I say. read more

I have worked in recording studios from the world famous Battery Studios in New York to Chicago Trax in the Windy City to January Studios in Dallas to Paramount Studios in LA and this facility blew my mind! 25' ceilings in the live room and a perfectly maintained SSL Console in the state-of-the-art Control Room. Staff is super professional and helpful. Their engineer dialed in the drum sound within minutes and they edited tracks in real time. Completely efficient and awesome vibe. read more

I was a bit nervous about this studio going in because the price is so affordable and you normally get what you pay for. The second I walked in it was clear that my fears were unfounded. Everything was incredibly nice and professional. Luke was a huge help. I don't have a ton of experience recording and had pretty unique needs, but Luke immediately figured out what we were going for and gave us exactly that. Cue the cliched comment, "I can't believe no one has has reviewed this business yet!" It's true, though. Shock City is such a gem in the recording business, it's a wonder that no one on Yelp has sung its praises. In my job, I'm responsible for overseeing the production of radio ads and video voiceovers. I had initially used a different local studio for this work, but in 2010, I gave Shock City a shot for a short voiceover. Seriously, it was just a blip in the work that they do and wasn't very expensive, but they made us feel like my business was extremely valued. I had set up a recording appointment through Chris, one of the owners whom I had "met" on Twitter. I brought the talent to the studio, and were warmly welcomed. We got a short tour of the studio before settling into the production room. Everything went quickly and smoothly, and Tony the audio guy was extremely patient as I interrupted recording again and again to coach the talent. After recording, we listened to individual takes of each line, noting favorites and tightening up spaces and breaths. We finished well within the hour that we had booked, and Shock turned the cleaned-up and properly formatted audio files over to our video company the following day. Since then, I've taken business to Shock again and again. They're so easy to work with for radio and video tracks, and they make my talent pool of 18- to 22-year-olds feel like rock stars. Indeed, the studio itself is breathtaking. It's a renovated ice house in south city, and while the outside is gorgeous, the inside is musician's dream. Every detail has been considered and added, since the owners are musicians themselves. Shock has the best equipment, the best setup and the best ambiance of any recording studio I've been to. I guess that's why they constantly rank among lists of top studios in the nation. Shock City's rates are really reasonable. We pay only about $100 per hour for recording and production - a steal for such high quality of the final product and top-notch customer service. The only downside I've come across with Shock is that they can occasionally be slow to process invoices. It's not a huge deal except when we're on deadline to pay everything before our fiscal year ends. Shock has been really understanding and apologetic when I send reminders for the bills, though. Shock City has attracted many famous musicians and voice talent to its studio. My jobs with them certainly don't rank among such high-cost, high-production deals, but I always feel valued and heard. Shock has turned what was formerly a mundane endeavor into a fun, technically astute treat. read more

If you want a serious studio look way outside of stl, my biggest issue with this studio is the lack in work they have to show for. No audio tracks to preview their mastering or mixing abilities. Be careful where you choose to spend your money. read more
