The gentlemen behind the counter were able to make an exception and let me purchase my gas with a check. This act really got me out of a bind, because without that gas I wouldn't have been able to make it to my destination or back home. Gas is pretty cheap here compared to some of the other stations in the area and everything worked fine. Shell has more modern stations out there and judging by the number of pumps, there sure were a lot of diesel nozzles available. On the gasoline side, I was one of 2 or 3 other cars. One was from Iowa with a cute Lab in the back, while another was from Wisconsin and decked out in Packer's gear. I had to go inside for a receipt, which I found to be a bit dark and tchotchke homey. Anyway, the bottom line for me was that I filled up the tank, topped it off, and was able to return the rental car at the Kansas City Airport while it still read full.
