We all found ourselves gravitating here every night before it closed to end our perfect days. Bartenders were all friendly, engaging and appreciated our patronage. We were sad our vacation ended, but our nights at the pub will be unforgettable. Prices are reasonable, they allowed us to bring in food and it's walking distance from our vacation house.

It's an unofficial local nexus for Fence Records, the small indie label started by a friend of mine over a decade ago, and chances are if you pop in here on a Friday afternoon you might just run into someone you know. Over the years the Ship has seen its share of music, and like any local pub worth anything it has a healthy cast of regulars who'll you'll find propping up a bar stool everyday. The nautical theme is par for the course in this seaside village, but there are loads of really neat historical shots framed and hanging on the walls that are worth checking out if you're ever in there. Stirling's resident Yelp expert, Nicola C recommended here with the disclaimer of "I don't know what it's like during the day though." So, my friend and I pitched up to be greeted by two regulars at the door who told us the pub was closed. "Awwww, really?" I said. "Naw hen!" followed by much guffawing on their behalf. In we stumbled, both having a laugh at the two oldies. The bar was empty apart from one other old gent which seems reasonable for 4.30pm on a Friday. We got a couple of drinks (Thistly Cross bottles for £3.50 each which is what I pay for them in the supermarket!) and sat by the fire (which thankfully someone came and stoked the hell out of so it was absolutely roaring, and scorching hot). The bar had a nice relaxed vibe. By the time we were leaving one of the regulars was well steaming and came over to talk to the Australian lassies and generally give us a bit of a ribbing. He got us to sign the visitors book and was generally pretty funny - I even got a kiss as I was leaving. Lucky me. So, would I recommend going here? The Fisherman Pie, which was Haddock, Smoked Haddock and Salmon in a Creamy Leek & Chive Sauce, topped with Mash Potato and Isle of mull Cheddar, was delicious. On top of that, they had a nice long list of ciders to select from and they had the Kopparberg Strawberry & Lime, which is one of my favorites.

Where the chicken that this chicken breast came from I don't know but it was definitely doing some serious weightlifting and bulking up. The chicken was beautifully juicy for general pub grub and the bacon was lovely, sweet but slightly salted which gelled all the flavours of the breaded chicken and the toasted roll together. Thinking about it now, I'm getting hungry again. Every time I have a pub burger, the side salad always lets it down, every time, it's like the bars expect people not to eat it, but not this bar. The salad was crisp and fresh, served up with a deliciously sweet vinaigrette that was perfect for dipping a wee bit of the roll in. The spirit measures were 35ml and the guest ales on offer covered breweries such as Innis & Gunn and The Inveralmond Brewery (who do beers such as Lia Fail and Ossian) which justified the bar being about 60-70p more expensive than the others we visited.

I'm still deciding on this place. I'm still not sure if I like it or not…read more It's got a nice little menu, but a couple of dishes get lost in translation to the plate from it. You see, I expect a bit more lobster than what I got as the menu description seemed to give me the idea of whole half a lobster on the first visit. On the second visit, i had sea bream which came with a side of chips, salad, tartare sauce and peas. The fish was nicely grilled and the chips were average but the sauce, peas and salad wasn't really singing to me. By looking at this and reading the whole thing back to myself, it's now giving me the thought of maybe not going back as the place just isn't blowing trumpets for me. For yourselves, give it a try. Just don't expect a whole load of fizz.
