    Katsu Sando

This place is cute! We ordered online and picked up and our food was ready on time as promised. We got a katsu sandwich and some onigiris. The onigiri was okay. The spicy tuna onigiri had a good flavor to it, and it was nice that the different flavors we bought were labeled. The katsu sandwich was delicious! The pork was perfectly cooked (not at all tough!) and I was amazed that it was not soggy in the slightest by the time we walked home.

What a find!!! Small, unassuming Japanese market/kitchen in the Upper West Side, teeming with goodies: Japanese snacks (Pocky, candies, chips), cooking essentials (condiments, miso, etc), tea (loose leaf and matcha), fresh produce, kimchi, dashi-marinated eggs, dango and sakura mochi (when in season), frozen gyoza, buns, dumplings, meats, and so much more. You just have to go check it out to see for yourself! (If you zoom in on some of the photos, you'll see more offerings as well) Now, the kitchen. This is the REAL DEAL and real comfort food! Oyakodon with dark meat chicken (yes!) and chicken or papel katsu curry! These were both made to order and DELICIOUS! This is not fast food, so there is a wait (but not longer than 10-12 minutes) for your freshly made meal. These staff is so sweet and helpful! There are many more items on their menu that we will want to try! Last note: the kitchen is for take out and delivery only. There isn't space to sit and eat. Handy info for your planning. ;)

The spicy salmon rice ball (onigiri) was one of the best I've ever had. I also tried the teriyaki chicken donburi - which was delicious and a huge portion.

I went to see a circus performance nearby and needed to eat before the show. I walked around the train station and found this gem! I am always game for some onigiri! Food & Service: 5/5 I ordered three onigiri and picked up some ume from the grocery section. She warned me before I even paid that they were backed up with orders, the eta is 15 mins for my onigiri. I had the time to spare but, that was so considerate of her. Also, they make every onigiri by hand so of course it takes more time. I loved the all of them! They were clearly fresh and perfectly salted! All in all, I love this place. The prices, quality, and speed of this team is amazing! They are all so kind and I can't wait to go back.

Japanese Grocery & To-Go Food Tried it for the first time. The food is freshly made, so you'll need to wait about 10-15 minutes for your order. There's no seating available--it's strictly for pick-up and take-out. Overall, the food was okay.

    Frozen delights.

One of my biggest hobbyhorses about specialty markets is whether they actually offer anything special -- things you can't easily find at mainstream grocery stores in our globalized age, things that are worth premium prices, and things that make it reasonable to visit even if you don't live nearby. When Shinbashi first opened on my block, I was happy to have a convenient Japanese store, but I was also skeptical that it would be much more than a novelty. Sure, it had Pocky, matcha Kit Kats and 10-pound bags of short-grain rice, but there wasn't much that seemed truly unfamiliar. As time went by, however, the shelves got fuller and fuller, and the food got cooler and cooler. All sorts of fermented hot sauces started to appear, and tins of unagi showed up next to pouches of (unfairly maligned) MSG. Bags and boxes of sweets, from Botan rice candy to sour strands of "fettuccine," were suddenly everywhere. Freezers and fridges were practically overflowing with breaded scad fillets, dry-brined salmon, fried tofu squares, mentaiko, milk bread, roll cakes, taiyaki fish pastries and Japanese beers that I (a craft beer aficionado) had never before seen, to cite just a few examples of the intriguing finds. And, in maybe my favorite development, the produce section became absolutely excellent. The section's excellence is partly reflected in the basics (e.g., broccoli, bell peppers, bok choy) always being vibrant, free of even the smallest specks of soil, and packaged so perfectly that they're practically gift-wrapped. But the excellence is also reflected in the hard-to-find items, such as fresh shiso leaves, umeboshi, bamboo, lotus root, bunashimeji mushrooms and nira (aka Chinese chives) that have now largely replaced scallions in my fridge. I should also note that, while the market can be expensive, the pristine produce is very reasonably priced, barely more than what you'd pay at a street-corner produce stand. I'll also mention that the employees are lovely, always shouting out greetings when you enter and always happy to chit-chat (often about suspicions that Trader Joe's workers are surreptitiously scouting the store for snack ideas -- a very valid suspicion, given that the TJ's around the corner has suddenly started stocking the aforementioned bunashimeji mushrooms as well as soy-seaweed crackers that abound on Shinbashi's shelves). I've written all of this without even mentioning the fact that Shinbashi has a large kitchen and takeout menu; I've actually never ordered anything (the menu is pretty heavy on meats that I don't eat), but fwiw, I have overheard customers raving on multiple occasions. And I guess it's a testament to Shinbashi's quality and variety that I can feel comfortable awarding five stars without having sampled the menu; it's a store that has bucked the trend of specialty markets becoming little more than the "ethnic foods" aisle at any given supermarket, and I feel fortunate to have it right downstairs.

Shinbashi is a cute Japanese takeout and grocery store in the heart of the UWS. My dinner plans were canceled and I was craving some Japanese food, so luckily this place was close by. I walked over and ordered at the counter, and the food was ready in about 10 to 15 minutes. In the meantime, I browsed the grocery store section, which has a decent selection of authentic Japanese food, various Japanese condiments, drinks, and frozen ready to eat food. The pork Katsu don was delicious, and the flavor was just so savory and well seasoned. The katsu was crispy and delicious, and the portion size was very reasonable. Please note that this place does not have seating areas for eating, it is exclusively a takeout place. I will definitely plan to be back to try more of the menu.

Got the pork katsu curry cuz I been craving Japanese curry and this hit the spottt. The curry sauce is a slightly chunky consistency (I'm guessing from onions), which I like because it's able to properly coat and stick to the katsu and rice. It's very flavorful and has a nice subtle spice. The pork katsu is well-cooked, tender, and has a nice crisp coating. Excited to discover how good other menu items are.

Shinbashi 72 is a mini Japanese grocery store in UWS with a restaurant in the back for take-out / delivery. Although the selection is limited, it's convenient for picking up basic Japanese groceries when you don't want to go all the way to midtown, downtown or NJ. As for the restaurant, my initial experiences after it opened were not great, so I'd only been here for groceries. It'd been a while, so I decided to give it another try recently and the Katsu Curry Rice ($16+) was great. So I just ordered it again for lunch today. I can't speak to the other menu items, but would recommend the Katsu Curry Rice if you're looking for homemade curry with crispy katsu and good white rice. The preparation time is pretty quick and their service is friendly, too.

Love this place. The staff is so friendly and welcoming. As soon as you walk into the shop the food speaks for itself. The aroma is very inviting and hits all the senses. I had the spam of onigiri and spicy tuna onigiri. The SPAM IS MY FAVORITE. Also got the chicken katsu curry rice. Chicken was fresh and perfectly crunchy. The curry was delicious. If you're looking for a great spot and great service, this is it.

Photo of the grisly thigh meat that ruined the chicken katsu curry rice dish for us.
    Yomna N.

I really love this restaurant and we used to order atleast once a week. Unfortunately, a recent change to the meat used in the chicken katsu curry rice has been really disappointing. This dish, a staple in our home, is something that we don't order any more. Our entire family, kids and adults alike, used to love this dish when it was cooked with chicken breast. But now that it's made with thigh, it's often chewy and gristly and hard for my kids to chew. I've recommended this restaurant, and specifically this dish to so many! Please change it back to breast so I can go back to ordering it for dinner once a week. Or atleast give customers the option of thigh or breast? Side note, this restaurant has some of the nicest owners in NYC. So many other good dishes on the menu, but really miss the old chicken katsu curry rice.

    So cute!

To drink, I had a Hot Organic Super Matcha Tea for 4.95. It was alright tea, and I wish teas were included in the price point, as otherwise, this place feels pretty traditional. In terms of food, I only ordered from the seasonal menu, so I'm not sure how the rest of the dishes are, but from what I had, I would go back for a light traditional meal. My appetizer was the Dashimaki Tamago/だし巻まき卵たま, or sweet savory omelet with daikon for $6.98. This came with three pieces along with a little dollop of grated radish. The pieces had a light sweetness to them along with a bit of savoriness. They were juicy and a bit bouncy while maintaining some softness. This was standard and good. My main dish was the $19.98 Beef Tan Tan Udon, or ground sirloin beef, spicy broth, baby bok choy, kikurage mushroom, scallions, and sesame seeds. While I have preferred udon from spots like Raku, the udon had a mild chew to it, and they were still good. The broth had a mix of sweetness and spiciness with a nice depth of flavor. The vegetables inside tasted fresh, and the meat added some richness. This was good as well. I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to go here, but the food was good. If you're in the area and looking for no frills Japanese dining in a more comfortable atmosphere at pretty decent Midtown East prices, I would recommend this place.

I got the cold, plum udon. Which was refreshing and a bit sour from the plums. The broth was sippable since it wasn't too salty. My friend got the mushroom cold soba and it came with mashed yam. This dish tasted more like what I was expecting since the sourness of my dish kinda was unexpected, but I still enjoyed it! My friend also got a drink and it was SO strong. I think they're serious about their drinks here I didn't see any mocktails or cocktails.
