BEST quality sushi in the Hollywood area! So much selection on the menu and the fish quality is insane! I was a sushi chef of 4 years and I'm very picky with where I get sushi. When I found this place, I knew I was going to become a regular.

This review comes after me deleting a previous review of a bad experience I had with a worker here for overcharging me and trying to steal my change. The owner reached out to me afterwards and wanted to refund and offer a discounted meal/free meal on the house. I accepted and deleted the review thinking he'd make good on his end but after reaching out multiple times recently, I realize the owner is now deliberately ignoring me. Maybe because of how long it's been since the incident, maybe because I deleted the review, maybe because he was lying? Either way, after yet another bad experience I no longer want the free meal but I do still want my refund. So Jimmy when you read this just know I'm coming for just that and I will not be deleting this review.

Dropped in cuz of the rain and convenience. So wish I'd taken the time to drive to a known quantity ramen place. Good service is only thing keeping me from a one star rating. But awful noodles (can't call them "ramen"), the pork belly was the fattiest I've ever been served, the corn tasted freeze burned and the sushi was truck stop grade at best. Total disappointment when I wasn't even expecting much to begin with. So easy to SOoooooo much better I LA.

Food 100/10 Service 100/10 Ambiance 100/10 I have been coming here for years already to the point where I feel like this is home to me already. This is one of the very few places that the food has been so consistently delicious the service has been consistently perfect and the ambiance has been consistently the it place to come have dinner and enjoy every second of it. The owner of this place Tim is a remarkable human being and he definitely knows and has been knowing what to do with this place because from day 1 that I stepped foot here it immediately became one of my favorites until this very day. I swear by shin whoever knows me knows shin is my go to no matter who what where when or how SHIN is it.

The parking to this location is a little difficult and not a lot in the front but they do have a back area. The server we had was super nice we did go in before 9pm so there was just us and another table so the service was good and she was really nice. The food was good and came out at a reasonable time. For 3 of us to eat with 2 beers was around $80 dollars which I feel is a reasonable price for the amount of food we got. They do have a pretty good amount of seating available they also do have TVs if you like watching sports. We liked the food and service and would go back if we were in town again.

There were very few people in the restaurant but it was a very early dinner because we had tickets to the Hollywood Bowl. Unfortunately, we tried to order many drinks/wine/saki from the menu & we were told that they didn't have that... come to find out, the menus were new and they hadn't received their order of ingredients/items yet. The sushi was very good; they have a robot who delivers the food to you!

Nice place, with parking! Menu has what you would look for in a Japanese restaurant, sushi, Ramen, etc. Staff is friendly, rocking tunes playing. Bento box for dinner was good, not great. A bit pricey, but everything is now-a-days.

First timer and very impressed with fresh food quality & excellent service from Montana. Has warm low-key personality and very attentive. He's so cute, looks like my college boyfriend! Came for $25 dine LA meal Appetizer: popcorn shrimp w spicy mayo on side Entree: baked salmon caviar roll Both excellent, shrimp very crispy tempura fried and so fresh! Can tell was not frozen shrimp. Trust me, I'm CantonesE Chinese & know my seafood. Ate Caviar on top of roll separately to savor its flavor alone. Fun to eat each tiny round ball w my chopsticks! I will definitely come back during dine LA try diff dishes. And include Shin in my future restaurant rotation. Thanks Montana, so cool his name embroidered on his shirt. And this cool lighted cube for service & paying, never seen before. I wanted to keep tapping service to change light to green, just to see Montana again & again. Just kidding. I'm old enough to be his mom hahaha!

I've eaten here quite a few times. I've tried their ramen and sushi. For the price I would recommend going to Sushistop instead it was not very appetizing. The service was fine. The fire ramen had very few toppings you have to pay to add so I would recommend Jinya which is my favorite and walking distance. I will try again maybe they have updated some things. It's in a little strip mall which I usually love because hidden gems but overall there are better options for the price.

Rejoice! Hollywood Shin has reopened (April 2025). Hallelujah! Absolutely ecstatic that our favorite sushi / ramen spot is back! And just as good as ever! Great service from the nice young man named Montana. Lovely ambiance expertly created by talented and dedicated owner Tim. Incredible cuisine prepared by the super-skilled chefs. Plus, they've added exclusive extra parking down the adjacent alley! (See photo). Our party of four came for lunch - and what a veritable banquet we had. Fire ramen, Bento box, sushi, spicy edamame, tempura, green tea - all super fresh, mouthwatering and delish! Welcome back to one of the best little restaurants in Hollywood. 100 stars!

Rock Shrimp Roll Shrimp Tempura Roll

We popped into Shin before watching Wicked for date night and WOW. The rolls were so fresh, beautifully plated, and honestly just hit every craving I didn't even know I had. We ordered a couple different rolls -- the rock shrimp roll came out perfectly golden, fried and creamy, with just the right amount of sauce (not drowning in it, thankfully). The shrimp tempura roll was topped with a generous heap of bright orange masago that gave the best little pop with every bite. Both were balanced, savory, and super satisfying without feeling heavy. Service was friendly, the sake came out piping hot, and everything arrived quickly. The ambiance is cozy in that classic neighborhood-way -- dim lighting, warm tones, and that comforting sound of the kitchen. If you're craving solid sushi that's flavorful, fresh, and doesn't feel overly fussy, Shin is the place to visit. We'll definitely be back.

We ended up being sat next to the grill, I have a shellfish allergy so we asked to sit in their outdoor seating area (which had plenty of tables open) instead just so my allergies don't get triggered by all the vapors. As we walked to our outdoor table, my husband and friend heard three workers talking crap about me and complaining that I shouldn't even be eating there because everything had shellfish. Let's be honest it's not that hard to accommodate, plus we're giving you our business so what's the problem? Rude all the way through table service, then when we were all finished, we had barely just paid and we were finishing our drinks when the same three workers rushed into our table to clear everything out and pushed us out of our table. All the workers answered my questions and even as the dinner rush came in, I never felt like I was pressured to hurry up. Huge kudos to them for this. There are lots of places to get ramen in Little Tokyo and I have my go to places, but now that so many other ramen places are popping up in the 626, the daunting task of driving to DTLA and finding parking have also factored into my decision to wander out. But as a J-fashion and anime fan, I'm just constantly thrown back into the Little Tokyo vortex. For this recent visit, I remember my friend hyping up the Anaheim Rakkan Ramen, so I thought why not? Came a bit later into the dinner rush, around 6-something PM and was seated immediately as a solo diner on a Friday night. It started to get a bit busier around the time I was finishing up. Seating is a bit tight inside with a couple of tables, counter bar seating, but they do have outdoors seating as well. Food came out efficiently and super piping hot. For my dinner, I got the: 1) Coffee Jelly: -One of my favorite, comforting Japanese desserts. If a bakery has it, I'll order it, and I felt a bit indulgent so I ordered it then. Staff asked if I wanted to have it at the end or just have it come out ASAP. I said ASAP and it was a good palate cleanser between the savory and sweet so I didn't get tired of the flavor. Not a super huge amount of coffee jelly (but makes sense since this is a restaurant and not a to go ordering counter at a bakery), but it was silky and had a good coffee flavor to it. You get a small "shot" of heavy cream milk to mix in and you can control how sweet you want it. Not bad. 2) Ramen Sushi Combo (Spicy Quartz Ramen + Aburi Salmon): -This comes with any signature ramen and any 2 pieces of sushi (extra fee for any upgrades) -I got their spicy quartz ramen, which is their creamy miso broth ramen made with your choice of chicken or pork chashu (I got pork), crispy fried garlic, seasoned egg, fried broccolini, and 2 pieces of nori. -There's LOTS of crispy fried garlic pieces in it. Every bite has a slight garlic after taste and it's nice to add a bit of crunchy texture to the ramen. -The broccolini is unique, I don't think I've ever had that with a ramen before and it's nice to have some greens too. - It's a seasoned egg, not a soft boiled egg, so don't expect that. It's not hard boiled all the way, but the flavor wasn't super strong for the egg. Not bad, but not the best. -The noodles are thicker egg noodles that had a nice chew and texture to it. However, the broth flavor wasn't that strong to me? If that makes sense. You get a good taste of creamy miso and a very slight kick, but I felt like the 2 small pieces of chashu and noodles didn't really take the flavor of the broth that well. Maybe I should have left my bowl of ramen soaking longer to get a better taste profile? Who knows. 3) Aburi Salmon (2 pieces): -I chose this with my combo and it doesn't incur an extra free. It's a seared salmon with mayo on top. -Not bad. Can never go wrong with aburi salmon. It's comparable to what you can get from Kura. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing or maybe my taste buds have been blasted by ramen spots with heavier, flavor intensive broths like Tenkaippin and Nagi. I don't mind going if someone else invites me and hopefully it's a better experience.

I remember going here during their grand opening ages ago, did their, back then, super cheap deal with unlimited noodle refill (even further discounted due to the special event day) and eating to the point of barely being able to sit up in the car without throwing up. I have a picture of my brother eating here in middle school with us and then later on in his early 20's. Crazy time lapse, and truly shows what a favorite this place is and it's place in the community. As with all businesses in Little Tokyo, parking can suck (not as bad as K-town, but you're either paying or super circling around). Service is super efficient, welcoming and polite, as with their other locations as well. It's not the biggest restaurant, but none of the Shinsengumis I've been to have been particularly large. With this location, from my first visit, and all the subsequent visits, I always get their Hakata ramen, firmer noodles, since the longer I eat and enjoy the food, they'll soften a bit, less soup oil and less saltiness. I get all of the toppings that it comes with and I always add in a poached egg. Love the strong pork flavor since they stew their broth for so long and the tenderness of the chashu (sometimes I order more). Prices have definitely gone up and a slightly altered upgraded version of this ramen is almost $30 if you're not careful enough. Times have changed but how good this place hasn't. There's more ramen options now than there were like 10 years ago, but Shinsengumi is always a classic.

The tonkotsu is not one of those rich, milky, creamy ones and I personally like these lighter ones more. I also enjoyed the shoyu which had a pleasant depth of flavor, but it felt like it was relying too heavily on MSG for umami. Noodles came out chewy. Definitely not the best ramens I've had but are some of the better ones in LA. Our server was friendly, as were the rest of the staff. Service was quick.
