The setting is cosy, if not a bit out of the way. I greatly appreciate the large selection of vegetarian food, for every curry there is the choice of paneer, indian vegetables, regular vegetables and for everyone else, a variety of meats. The gobi (cauliflower) pakora is definitely worth a try, as it is always made fresh, and is crisp and delicious. I have also been informed that the tandoori dishes are unmatched. If you happen to be anywhere near Kilwinning, give it a try!

Same team and hopefully same excellent restaurant and great menu! Arrive hungry and choose the banquet! Just like its hugely popular sibling Balbirs in Glasgow West End they serve the banquet to your table. Everyone raves about their tandoori salmon, though I stick to their vegetarian options. Its a smart joint serving excellent modern Indian cuisine. Keep your eyes peeled for signposts on A77. Since the new Symington flyover the access to Balbirs has changed a little to make it safer and easier. Who would have thought an unspectacular 'box' that was once home to a Little Chef could be so lovely inside!

Overhauld (practically rebuilt) withmuch more room & lots of parking at the rear, this is probably the only restaurant I have regularly eaten in at least 4 times a month. Service is excellent, with the boss Michael & waiters providing an efficient and friendly, but never intrusive service, and quality and taste of food just outstanding! I have eaten in the other variants of Balbirs, in Church St in Glasgow's West End, at Shawlands, at Charing Cross, but though very good, they don't really come up to Balbir's at Route 77 standard in terms of outright taste and quality. Much of this is down to the chef's interpretation of a dish, for example try a lamb saag here & then compare elsewhere & you'll see the difference. Similarly the lamb methi and chicken tikka achari or pan fried lamb fillet interpretations are unbeatable. For something really different, order the salmon pakora, and you'll be back here for more. We've eaten in Asian restaurants around the world : some good, some very good and some I'd rather forget about & am happy to see that in the last 10 years or so the number of really good Asian restaurants in Glasgow & West of Scotland in particular (sorry : don't know about Edinburgh) has increased enormously. However judged on the sheer flavours which burst in your mouth, irrespective of which dish you've ordered, this retaurant comes right at the top. Theres no doubt if I was to be asked what my one favourite restaurant is, this has to be it. Price : extremely reasonable considering the high quality and a bit less than what you'd pay in central Glasgow. Just about forgot they do carry outs to the same high standard. The only slight downside is the slightly remote location which realistically means it can only be accessed by car (I suppose the up side is it doesn't get invaded by over excited people from the local pubs around closing time) and if heading back to Kilmarnock / Glasgow you have to head towards Prestwick first before turning since it's a dual carriageway. A trivial price to pay though. All in All I would have no hesitation in recommending this Balbir's to any discerning curry lover & have no hesitation in awarding it five stars.

There is so much choice of delicious Indian dishes and also a European menu. We've decided to go there again over Christmas! For some people access might be difficult at the restaurant is upstairs without a lift. The staff seem happy to help those who have difficulties by carrying pushchairs or bags, etc. They also do a take away service and the restaurant is open at lunchtimes as well as evenings. We did not wait very long for a pre dinner drink or the menu. The owner was a great hospitable guy who could not do enough for you, and his wife and the young English guy waiter were very friendly. The meal cost £28.50 for two people absolute bargain. The best Indian meal we have tasted in a long time, deserve 5stars.

We went the other night with a "Today's Great Deal" groupon type thing which included a bottle of wine, a platter of starters, and two tiffon boxes with naan and rice. It was a hearty and tasty meal served by incredibly friendly and enthusiastic staff. The place looks much nicer than one would gather from their website, the photos of which make it appear dingy and crowded. It's actually bright with pretty wallpaper and the tables are well spaced out. The tiffon box menu is a clever conceit--you are served three dishes from a tiffon box which gives the meal a bit of fun and is a way to try and share several dishes. However, it would be a little nicer if they took the bottom of the box away. Instead they leave the metal arms sprawling awkwardly across the table which inhibits the dish-sharing it's meant to encourage. The food itself is mostly good with a few misses. We got the Tandoori and the Old Favorite (south indian chilli chicken, chicken korma and lamb bhoona). In both the entrees and the appetizers, the meat was cooked beautifully and spiced to perfection. The naan was gorgeous. The curries were a little off, though. The korma was very bland and the chilli chicken was all heat, no nuance. The bhoona, though, was quite tasty. Everything we ate tasted fresh; you could tell it was all made to order. Overall, I'd say this is a good spot for some affordable, friendly and mostly yummy indian grub.

My fiancée, my parents and myself went to visit for dinner. During our visit we were served by no less than 9 different servers (yes we were counting, it turned into a game). We ordered 4 starters Channa Poori (no taste), Garlic chicken tikka (burnt), prawn cocktail (suace was very watered down) and fish pakora (it was nice, but was battered fish, and not fish pakora). Finished starters the server number 3 came along with the next courses of food, and instead of removing the dirty plates just put the next set of plates on top of it! And when my partner asked for a clean fork a utter look of confusion surrounded the face of the server. We ordered chansi (a normally sweet/sour dish, but just tasted like a bowl of BBQ Sauce from McDonalds), a Tandoori chicken (that was pretty fantastic surprisingly) a Balti and a Sonya (both had a 5mm layer of oil at the top of the dish). During eating dinner we witnessed 2 people send their dishes back and also heard the best comment I've heard in a Indian restaurant "Why is there bones in my vegetable Pakora" I really hope this was just an off night for them and their service is normally better, but I'm afraid I won't be going back to find out.
