J. R. Hord, my husband, went for an evaluation at 6:30am on 11/19/24 with Dr. Carol Shields. We did not leave until 2ish, as this is the most thorough practice ever. They gave him so many tests, leaving no stone unturned, nothing to question. Meanwhile, as my husband is undergoing numerous tests, we had an issue as we had not brought his MRI results. In Richmond, VA, the 2 retinal specialists we saw did not look at them, as they said that their photos were much better. I did not think to take the MRI, as I assumed that they would not be helpful. The MRI had actually been for an unrelated issue to his eye but luckily identified the tumor in his eye. Eager to have everything needed for an evaluation, I started calling VCU Hospital, where he had the MRI to check on immediate delivery. Gabe, who works the front desk, was so helpful in my efforts to get the delivery of the MRI. He spoke to VCU medical records numerous times. His patience and diligence are to be commended. Eventually, I was able to at least share the findings from my husband's patient portal at VCU with one of the numerous doctors he had seen that day. Once all of the information was gathered, Dr. Carol Shields entered the room with her team of approximately six following behind her. All members of the team fell silent as she dictated the notes and findings. Her confidence, knowledge, ability to be so focused, and obvious expertise were AMAZING. As we sat there, I would see her moving through the hall with such determination to help as many patients as she could. Honestly, I was in awe of her! Her diagnosis of my husband having melanoma in his eye was delivered with compassion, and she took the time to answer all questions that we asked. Dr. Shields was thorough in discussing all options for treatment. After that, we met with her clinical research counselor, who explained possible trials that would be available to him. Although we are eager to help others and have been in clinical trials before, we decided against being in a trial. We are older, miles away from Philadelphia, and eager to be aggressive for peace of mind. The clinical research counselor was more than kind, allowing us to determine what was best for us with no pressure. She showed such empathy, even giving us a hug as we left. That hug was so sincere and appreciated. Next to the fabulous ladies, Lisa and Debbie, who helped with the understanding of the paperwork. They patiently explained what to expect. They were so through and compassionate. Everyone, and there were many, was professional, compassionate, and eager to be helpful. I wish that I could remember more names so that I could give them a proper thanks, but I do not. Forgive me. We went back to the hotel later that evening, and I read through the pamphlets and all of the forms that were in the packet given to my husband. I had questions. The next morning I was back at Shields and Shields at 7am with papers and questions in hand. Luckily, Lisa made herself available to me in spite of the many patients, and she answered all of my questions. I felt guilty, as I did not want to take much of their time as there are so many in need of their service. This practice does so much good for so many that my admiration for this group is over the top. I must say that this is the most cohesive team ever! Dr. Carol Shields has done an incredible job of putting together this incredible team. Dr. Carol Shields is beautiful inside and out; may she be in practice for many years to come. We left feeling hopeful, knowing that we had made the best choice in the selection of our doctor. Dr. Shields is a world-renowned doctor, and it was obvious to me why. read more
