I have a Canada-wide membership and been to GoodLife locations in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton &…read moreWinnipeg...but I live closest to this location so it sees me the most often. First the good: Like all GoodLifes, it has a very good selection of cardio machines and a pretty good selection of plate-loaded/selectorized machines. The gear is all kept in good shape, and faulty equipment is usually repaired within a few days. There are two full dumbbell racks, three power cages, stretching areas, a group class room, spin class room, nice change rooms and showers etc. Lots of parking outside. The not-so-good: Crowded and smelly - especially the free weight area. Quite a few metal-heads and juicers - but not as bad as some other gyms in town. It's almost impossible to get a weight bench between 6pm and 10pm most evenings. Waiting lines are common for the more popular machines like the single pec/deltoid deck. Users rarely ever re-rack their weights, leaving them for you to stumble over or search for. The floor space isn't efficiently allocated for this location - as mentioned, the free weight area is always crowded, but the huge cardio area is never at more than 50% capacity, and I've never, ever seen anyone use a spin bike in the adjacent spin class room. The spin area and part of the cardio area should be repurposed with more benches, free weights and plate-loaded machines. This would help balance out the usage in the club. Signs reminding members to re-rack their weights would also be a very good idea. UPDATE : February 2017 Had to knock a star off. The gym had a large room where fitness classes were held, but it was very underutilized. Rarely more than five or six people in there at any given time. This room has been converted into a women's only gym... and is now used even less than before. I'm sitting in the co-ed gym right now and there are 4 women in here but only one in the women's only gym - which seems typical on my visits. This wouldn't be an issue except that management moved ALL the Hoist machines into the women's side, making them inaccessible to male patrons and screwing up many a workout. Unsurprisingly attendance at the gym seems down significantly. I know that I've been forced to go to GoodLife's Burnaby location and other gyms to get access to a full range machines. Management here had a chance to to improve the Surrey location per my original criticisms, but instead they've found a way to make it worse. Unbelievable.

Of course there are things they can do. It is simply DISGUSTING!!! I havent seen any signs asking people to clean their machines and the cleaning staff never does it either! It smells horrendous in there and the gym is obviously unsanitary. I'm regretting signing a contract with this gym solely due to their lack of hygiene.

What wins me over is the amount of equipment to use and the the fact that I'm greeted, by name, by two of the staff (Christina and Ken). Means a lot. Usually very clean, everyone, for the most part, is wearing a mask even while working out, and most customers are well behaved.. If your soul goal is to power lift, this is not the gym for you as it is heavy on the cardio yet, judging by the size of many of the customers, weight training here is not an issue. And the hydramassage is an amazing way to end the workout. *Big bonus is the Pan Asian grocery store next door!

The gym itself is fine. Three squat racks, three benches, a decent amount of dumbbells, and more…read morethan enough cardio machines. They recently changed the format and it's a lot more spacious, which is nice. Pretty helpful that they have trashcans with cleansing cloths provided to clean machines. The She's Fit area is decent but a little messy in how they set up the machines. The staff are pretty nice and friendly. The major downside to this gym is that it's almost always packed and the people who come here are SO RUDE. That's more telling towards the members and not the gym itself, but still - the gym seems to attract a lot of members like this. There needs to be sign up sheets or something for the squat racks and benches because there is always a "line up" for it. Most people are okay about it and respect the imaginary queue by just being like "hey, how many more sets do you have? let me know when you're done" and it's good, but then sometimes if I come back and a guy rushes in before I claim it, I'll be "hey, I was already waiting" and they'll be like "So? it's too late". Like what the heck, man. DO YOU NOT KNOW GYM ETIQUETTE. YOU ASK. Also, a lot of the machines are always out of order and never seem to get repaired. As well, on certain days, some of the front desk members are really liberal in always wanting to change the song that is currently playing. It's not that big of a deal, but it's kind of annoying when it happens to a song you're enjoying. I remember I was doing some sets on the leg extension machine, probably about ten minutes, and they changed the songs midway around 7 times. Oh yeah, some front desk members aren't really on their game when it comes to work. I kept scanning my pass and for two weeks or so, the gate never opened for me. They never cared and just let me in until one day one girl actually checked my file and saw that my debit had expired so I had to provide new banking info. Since it expired, the last payment didn't go through and I had to pay an extra fee. I feel like if other front desk associates caught that sooner, and actually cared to check + update my file instead of letting me walk in, me having to pay extra fees and not awkwardly asking what was up for 2 weeks straight could have been prevented. Overall, the pros outweigh the cons and the price is more than fair.
