By no means am I an expert in paints. I've done my due diligence and asked many contractors on their opinions on the best brands of paint and 2 brands consistently came up. The first is Sherwin-Williams and the second is Benjamin Moore. While I entertained Home Depot and Lowe's as sources to get home renovation material, I absolutely decided against going that direction after I found out that many products they sell are "builder-grade quality". While that may sound like a fancy term, it is not. Home Depot and Lowe's gets lower quality products in many different categories (e.g., wooden floors, tiles, etc.). I've gotten a very good lesson from a trusted contractor who carefully explained and showed me the differences between the quality of such products sold at Home Depot and Lowe's so I was dead-set on going to Sherwin-Williams to purchase the best paint I could buy. I've been extremely impressed with Sherwin Williams corporate and the staff in store (Clayton and his manager). As you may guess, a wall full of 300+ paint color options makes it extremely difficult for a consumer to choose the right paint in 1 visit. Clayton and his manager guided us through with options and recommendations, which include showing us their mobile app to see the paint color in full decorated settings on the Sherwin Williams website. Clayton guided us through several options (and with a lot of patience) and in the end I was not able to decide what color I wanted. Surprisingly enough, you don't have to commit to a color during your purchase of the paint. You buy a base white paint which then gets tinted. Thanks to Clayton, I was able to take advantage of their 30% sale (last day of the year and it's biannual). I'm really thankful to him for this recommendation. Overall, I've been extremely satisfied at the level of knowledge and customer service at Sherwin Williams. I highly recommend going directly to this store instead of Home Depot/Lowe's. The amount of knowledge (especially if you are experienced) and attention you get is totally worth the visit. read more

This review is for the store's new location on Rockville pike. Great products, no question. We have used them to repaint our deck and the entire interior of our house over the last couple years. Unfortunately we have had really bad customer service at the new location. We had two rooms left to repaint this summer and went to SW as usual for the great products and (previous) expertise of associates. When I outlined our room size to the associate he apparently decided to upsell us on an extra gallon of paint that we would not need. I finished painting the two rooms with thick double coats, using almost exactly two gallons with a little extra left over for future touch ups. I never had to touch the third gallon the associate said that we needed. When I went to return the third can I was told they do not accept returns for already tinted paint even though it had never been opened. Even when the manager asked and I confirmed that their associate had said we would need the third gallon. They seemed surprised by this recommendation when I gave the dimensions of our rooms but said the best they could do is try to retint the paint at a future date. When I got home I tried several online paint use calculators for our room dimensions all of them recommended two gallons, not three. So an associate, who we made the mistake of trusting, upsold us an additional gallon of paint to boost their sales knowing we could not return it. There are so many better ways this could have been handled ("try two gallons and come back if you need more"). Now we have an unopened gallon of paint we have no need for and MIGHT be able to be retinted in the future. This incident is on top of another with the same store on the same project. When we realized that we didn't have white ceiling paint left over from previous painting projects, my wife went to pick up another gallon from this store (I was already painting the walls). The associate was rude and dismissive of her to the point that she had to call me to get what should have been a simple paint order hammered out. But instead of giving her a can of white paint as we requested (which I heard her order on the phone), he still made a gallon of the blue paint we were using for the walls. Which is bizarre since our wall color never came up in the order conversation. I had to go back and return it but at least in this case they owned up to the mistake and replaced the gallon at no additional cost. This is really disappointing as we have been able to fully rely on SW staff in all of our past projects to give us clear, accurate advice. Communication from associates was terrible and, at best, they didn't know what they are doing or are actively giving wrong advice to boost sales. If the associate wasn't sure he should have just said so and I could have googled a paint use calculator on my phone and figured it out right there on my own. But that is why we have always gone to SW in the past. The products are awesome and I could always rely on staff to give great advice on exactly what product fit our needs. (The associate at the previous location who helped us choose the right deck paints last year was amazing.) SW products remain great but do your own homework when preparing for a painting project as you can't rely on some of the staff at this store to treat you well, give good advice, or take ownership of their mistakes. read more

Despite one negative about their staffs, I thought this store was wonderful and all the staffs were incredible. We know absolutely nothing about painting a house. Our new place is freshly painted by the previous owner, but our master bedroom is a disaster as some spots look like literally an elephant or monkey painted it. The majority of the house is also covered in ivory beige. Although I would like to feel calm and peaceful at home, I don't want to feel like I got a tranquilizer shot and be bored. Yes we need to repaint some parts of our house with more colors. After roaming around Home depot and Lowe's and reading online reviews, we decided to check out Sherwin-Williams. There must be a reason as to why Sherwin-Williams has such a wonderful reputation. When we arrived at 6pm, Dominique helped us. He was an energetic and wonderful sales rep, and he helped us decide what colors we wanted to pick. Here are some helpful perks when shopping at Sherwin-Williams: 1) Download their app: ColorSnap. You can look up any paint color/style you like and can also mix & match. You can upload your room picture and compare, or the app will allow you to explore the color by automatically showing a room photo in the particular paint color you pick. 2) If you can't decide the paint color you want immediately and there's a special sale going on, you can purchase white paints in advance and then later exchange for a different color. We purchased our paints on the last day of the November Thanksgiving special sale, and this is what we were recommended to do. 3) You should buy a sample amount of paints to test the color out on your walls. I felt so overwhelmed about our paint shopping, but Dominique made everything seem so easy and trouble free. The paint quality here is a given. I would highly recommend this place. read more

Well two visits back and I have to say that well they are poorly staffed (still only one person there most of the time), they are not that crowded. I may be addicted to Pinterest, but I *despise* doing the actual domestic/home-improvementy stuff myself, so I wasn't terribly excited about having to go to Duron to pick out paint for my condo, but thanks to the lovely sales girl, I actually enjoyed the experience! First, I will begin by saying that I would have given this Duron a five star review, but I arrived the first night about 10 minutes before their listed closing time and the door was closed and locked and the lights were turned off already. If a business posts their closing hour as 7pm, then that is when their door should technically close and they should stop taking customers, not 10 minutes beforehand. //end rant So, the next day, I made sure to arrive 10 minutes after they opened. Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, I walked in with absolutely zero clue as to what I was doing. I explained to the lovely lady my situation, my square footage, and the types of colors/tones I like. She suggested a color (Ivory Powder) that worked PERFECTLY. Once I gave her the dimensions of the rooms being painted, she made sure I had exactly the right amount to avoid having excessive overage but also without coming short. Once my painters were done, I was FLOORED. I was more excited about my new condo than I had ever been before. I wanted to make love to the walls. And I'm not really one for inanimate objects. She also suggested a different type of paint than my painters themselves had suggested for the bathroom, and even my professional painters were floored by how AMAZEBALLS the end result looked. Seeing that I was a little girl, and she was taller and used to handling paint buckets from working there, she even carried my paint to my car for me, wished me good luck, told me to call with any questions or concerns so I don't have to battle Rockville Pike traffic if I don't need to, and gave me a hug. Nothing makes my day quite like a good hug does. I might be ready to give up my day job and become the next Martha Stewart after this experience. Watch out! read more

If you are investing time and money in paint labor, invest your materials dollars in Dominique and the crew at this fine Sherwin Williams store. They helped us through the "getting the right shade of gray" gauntlet - and what an exercise that was! Then selecting the right paints for all of our new house needs and giving us a fair price for over 100 gallons of primer, ceiling, wall and trim paint. Well done Dom! read more

I went in hoping to find a match to the paint that's currently on my walls for touch-ups. The guys working at the counter were extremely helpful and seemed genuinely interested in getting the best match possible. The match turned out pretty well too--not perfect, but really close. Went to this SW twice. First time great experience; met the nicest staff. He was so friendly that I felt comfortable asking a lot of questions I normally wouldn't bother asking. Gave me honest opinion and explanations on different paint grades. He even gave me 30% off sample paints that only applied to gallon size as I later learned from Dominique(sp?), whom I had the misfortune of encountering the second time I visited the store. The experience completely negated any positive impression I had of the store and SW brand. In fact, I've decided not to allow my painter to use SW paints due to my horrible experience with Dominique. Thinking I would be able to buy more quart size sample paints of different colors before making a final decision, I was stonewalled by Dominique who used the most condescending tone of voice when I asked him if he could apply the 30% to my purchase. I found myself being interrogated by this burly guy who kept insisting I was buying gallon size. I told him I was only buying quart size but I would like to have the 30% off as before. As if that wasn't an acceptable answer, he talked over me and told me I'm buying gallon size. I was able to get the 30% off at the end when another staff intervened but not without having to give them my personal information and sign up membership. Yes, the store was bustling with professional painters/contractors due to the 30% off promotion. However, lets not forget whose houses are these painters painting, not their own house for sure! It's home owners like you and me whose houses they are painting!! Like I said, I've instructed my painters to Benjamin Moore as SW and this store seems to be losing the forest for the tree. read more
