This is a great hotel actually. Clean, bright and in a great location. We were there for a family reunion and it was a great set up for being near everything from a good sized mall to the pubs on the street. I would definitely visit again. read more

Had a rough start here with some mechanical issues in the room but the staff quickly responded. This was a nice finish to a 10 day excursion across Ireland and although the places we stayed were fun. It was nice to get somewhere that was a bit more quiet with modern conveniences and some privacy. The rooms were clean. The staff was awesome. And the underground parking was highly appreciated. read more

We stayed here towards the end of February Pre pandemic outbreak. The staff were very friendly and accommodating including let my daughter and I into a vacant tower room so she could snap some pictures. The location of the hotel is good for exploring the small town of Athlone on foot. My kids loved the tour of the castle in town. Breakfast was Buffett style and well catered with hot and cold options but again that was pre pandemic so not sure how it's being handled now. Overall a very solid hotel with excellent staff that helped make it a memorable stay for the right reasons. read more

Rooms good. Location good. Parking good. Breakfast ok. Rest of food terrible. Really unbelievably weak. It's so easy to make decent food with the same ingredients but it's canteen food when all is said and done. Service pretty weak too. Just forget things and not focused on getting stuff done. A pleasant combination of a clean and well lit room, comfortable bed, and customer staff who responded instantly. I was in the main part of the hotel, not the tower, so my room did not have the posh tub shown in the hotel's advertisements. It did have a new bathroom with a sparkling clean tub and separate shower. The room was spacious and as a business traveler, I appreciated the excellent lighting. The wi-fi was top-notch in the room and just a little less in the common areas. The desk was big enough to open up a report without interfering with your suitcase. Two small closets with good hangars. The hotel is a short walk from the bus/train station and its logo is easily visible from the station acting as a welcome beacon. Do not follow the road signs to the hotel -- it will lead you to the parking garage which seems to be underground and shared with a mall. The parking garage next to the hotel entrance is for the mall only. I overheard a couple having an argument about it. Back to the convenient mall: it is accessible directly from the level beneath the hotel's lobby. Very convenient if you forget your hiking shoes. I did not spend a lot of time in my room but I'd say the available television stations would appeal more to my teenage granddaughter. I am impressed with the hotel's ability to manage several large groups concurrently without allowing one group to overrun the hotel. One thing to note if your group is planning a rooftop barbecue is that the rooftop is also the hotel's smoking area. The location is great -- you are within walking of anything you'd want to see or do in Athlone. read more

I really should split the review between the spa and the hotel. I was being taken for an overnight in the hotel and to the spa as a treat. The hotel is really lovely. I got a fabulous room in the tower with a panoramic view of Athlone and the surrounding countryside. My bed was so big and comfy I had a great night's sleep. The bathroom was pretty swanktaculor as well. We ate three meals at the hotel and they were all really good. I really liked the decor of the hotel, apart from a small signage issue which meant that all three of us got lost at some point in the 24 hour period. My favourite part of any hotel is always the pool area and while the pool was small it was very nice and didn't seem at all crowded. So I would give the hotel 4 stars (lose one star for crappy hairdryer in my bedroom, and TV internet not working) The spa was a bit more disappointing. I wasn't aware until after what I had been booked in for and what the specs were. I was booked in for 2 hour long treatments and was out in about an hour and a half. The 15 minutes spent on my full pedicure left me wondering if the express pedicure (for 45 euro) was just a toenail polish. On saying all that the girl who did my treatments was very good and gave me a lot of advice on how I was chronically mistreating my skin - and sensible advice on what to do to fix it. But all three of us had our treatments cut way shorter than advertised and considering the price of treatments and that it was the purpose of our stay I would only give the spa two stars! read more

I stayed here with my girlfriend while we were attending a wedding hosted on the premises. I knew nothing about the place, having left all the booking up to my girlfriend but I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. The room we were staying in was lovely. It was very spacious and the bed was massive. It was probably the biggest most comfortable bed I have ever had the pleasure of passing out in. The wedding was hosted in the Hoey suite which was the hotel's largest function room. It was big enough to hold the 100 or so guests in attendance. It was decorated nicely for the occasion with all the usual wedding bells and whistles and looked all fancy and stuff. The food was good, not great but good. I had duck comfit to start which was really good but the inclusion of whole orange segments with the dish was a bit odd. I had the fish for my main. From what I remember it was grand but I remember very little of it. My only real issue was with the limited stock available in the function room bar. There was only the standard spirits for sale (Smirnoff vodka, Jameson whiskey etc.) there was no fancy top shelf whiskeys or spirits which many of the wedding party were looking for considering the day it was. I would probably go back to stay if I was going to Athlone again mainly because I want to sleep in one of those amazing beds again. read more

Had an excellent 6 night stay here on my SPG points so I cannot give an account for value, but the staff was very helpful even in giving local food recommendations as well as knowledgeable about opening and closing hours of many local shops and restaurants. Very spacious room (for a European hotel) and excellent facilities. The only thing I noticed that was lacking was that housekeeping would not do a second sweep of rooms that had missed the morning service, nor would they check in to see if I needed towels but apart from that, I would definitely recommend this hotel! read more

Very nice rooms and excellent views if you get a tower room. Bathroom is very large with a separate shower that has great water pressure. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Pool is really great, with water features, steam room and a sauna. You'll need two euros for a swim cap if you didn't bring one though as they are strangely mandatory. read more

For the money I guess it's a decent deal but for anyone who stays at westins and other Starwood properties a bit more like four points than Sheraton. Gold members do not have access to the lounge. The reception area is average and the bar is small and very loud even without entertainment. The rooms are small by US standards but moderately well appointed. If you want two beds you have to get a "family" room in the main building. read more

Wonderful hotel at the same price point as B&Bs. The room was beautiful and comfortable, the bed was so comfortable, and the bathroom was large with a great shower. This hotel definitely felt like luxury compared to the B&Bs we had been staying in. It has a great location, secure free parking, and is an easy walk down to the castle and pubs/restaurants. We didn't eat at the Sheraton but had a fantastic wine tasting experience with Ben in the restaurant which definitely made the experience even better. Highly recommend the Sheraton if you are in the area or need a place to stay before/after Clonmacnoise. read more

Sheraton, part of the Starwood Hotels and Resorts company of which I am a platinum member (I know, La De Dah), usually provides reliably good quality and service. Not this time. When my friend and I checked in, I was told we had been upgraded to a mini suite. Nice. I assumed this included two beds as I originally requested. Never assume. We were given a room with one bed. I called down to the front desk to request a room with two beds. The woman at the front desk sounded annoyed and announced there was no upgrade to be had if I wanted two beds. Okay, no upgrade. We were on the 3rd floor and I was told we were going to the 2nd floor. "Someone will be there," the voice said. We left the room and sat on a couch in the small lounge area just outside the room. We waited 25 minutes and I used the phone on the wall to call down again. I was never demanding nor did I raise my voice. I explained the situation and said I was unsure if we were to wait on the third or the second floor. The voice said curtly, "So! You want to move rooms!" Sigh. She never did say where to wait, just told me someone would be there. We waited another 15 minutes. Declan arrived and we were finally taken to our room. He was all smiles and apologetic, but he too did not understand why we turned down the first room. I explained that my travelling companion was a long-time, wonderful friend, but I did NOT want to share a bed with her. For waiting so long, Declan said we could have a complimentary lunch in their restaurant. The restaurant turned out to be a tiny cafeteria style place in the hotel. Breakfast the next morning was fine...buffet style. The room was small but clean. I just expected a more caring, pleasant staff. read more

Seated at 7.20pm tonight. Main course arrived at 9.05pm!! Completely under-staffed, despite the fact that the restaurant was only 1/3 full. Very disappointed. Staff are very courteous but the hotel clearly needs to plan better. Food is reasonably good for country hotel style. read more

Great central location with friendly, helpful, and welcoming staff. I was traveling with my 4 kids (ages 7-16), wife, and near-80 year old in-laws (party of 8) and we stayed at the Sheraton Athlone for 4 delightful nights and will absolutely return in the future. My wife and I had adjoining rooms which we requested in advance, and my in-laws had a club-room with an amazing view. Parking was easy, located below the hotel (for free with validation), and the hotel itself is connected to a very nice, modern shopping mall which is accessible directly from the hotel. The fitness room was excellent and my wife and I managed to get a couple runs in on the treadmills. Breakfast on the first floor was absolutely wonderful offering a full Irish breakfast buffet as well as continental choices, such as smoked salmon, cold cuts, cheeses, fruits, and cereals. On several days my wife and in-laws ordered poached eggs which they loved. What made the hotel so special though was the staff! The front desk staff were incredibly welcoming, nice, and helpful, making various suggestions to help make our time in Athlone special. The wait staff at breakfast, and even the cleaning crews were all incredibly professional, helpful, and super nice -- always friendly to my kids. read more
