The service in the restaurant was terrible and the food was sub-par. The steak was well done and no one came to check if we needed anything. Continuously had to ask for another pint/beverage, water, ect. We had a lovely lakeside sure. All rooms named after wine and each have a bottle in the room to maintain the theme. The room was spacious with large bedroom, bathroom and a decked balcony overlooking the lough. With such a lovely room and friendly greeting by reception who escorted us to our room it is hard to find faults. You can hire BMW bikes if you are so inclined which is complimentary. Also 2 hot tubs and a spa. We had our table booked for 7.30 but had a drink before in the Bollinger Lounge before hand. the measures of wine for a glass are very generous. The seafood platter and accompanying bread was the best of the courses I had. The salmon was just slightly over but rested on very tasty crushed potatoes. The wine list isn't as extensive but certainly hits the right areas. we were seated at a table overlooking the lough and great views of the sun set. Breakfast in the morning can be enjoyed in the restaurant or they will bring to your room for no extra cost. we decided take it in our room. Is the wineport the same as 10 years ago? probably not, I think subtle changes have taken place and some of the focus moved from the food and wine to a more crowd pleasing menu. Location - it is within walking distance to tons of stuff Friendly staff members The breakfast was extra but there was a good selection, I liked that I was able to squeeze my own OJ The bar was a fun place to grab a drink What were the cons? The hair dryer - it was not powerful and felt like it was going to vibrate out of my hand while using it. It also would stop working after a few minutes. There was no thermostat to adjust the air temperature, you have to open the window so it did get loud with street noise late at night The bed and pillows were a tad uncomfortable

The room is a tad small but well equipped with robes, Nespresso, tea and free parking, free wifi and s safe. The public areas are lovely especially the expansive deck overlooking the river. The breakfast buffet offered a vast assortment of options including a full Irish breakfast. My only suggestion would be add a bit of ambiance with background music in the restaurant. Also the workout room was well equipped but the blaring music put me off, we took an early morning walk along the river instead (there is a footpath along the river on the side opposite the hotel). The location is perfect, on the banks of the River Shannon in the center of Athlone. Historic sites, restaurants and bars are an easy walk.

The food in the bar is dreadful & the fine dining area was too expensive for a family to use. Unfortunately when we were there a sharp piece of plastic ended up in my daughter's ice cream & they had a fire drill for staff without telling any guests on the third floor which meant a relative in her late sixties with a very bad hip & back had to defend three stories by stairs with everyone else only to be told when she got there that there was no need to. Frightened the kids too. A request for a pitcher of water to be sent to a room at 10.45 arrived at 12.15 after two calls down to reception. Slight touch of fawlty towers going on. Free wifi that sometimes works in the rooms. Not the best of experiences. I'd love to rate it higher, unfortunately can't.

We ended our meal with their flaky cheesecake and we are pretty spoiled in America with some pretty good cheesecake, but the flaky cheesecake at the Prince just melted in our mouths. Absolutely to die for!! We would highly recommend anyone living or visiting Althone to stop in, you won't be sorry!
