I, Dr. Howard Friedman MD regret having to write this, but my wife, Ibojka Friedman's experience at Sher Smiles was profoundly disappointing--particularly because it wasn't the dental care itself that left a bad taste, but the deceptive and unethical billing practices. Dr. Deena Sher evaluated what was clearly a minor, benign mouth lesion. The initial consultation was nearly $200, which we expected. What we did not expect was an additional $600 fee to "prepare" the lesion for outside pathology review--on top of whatever the external lab charged (which was not included in their estimate). That brought a simple, benign oral cyst to a cost of over $1,000, despite our dental insurance. The most troubling issue is that Sher Smiles chose not to submit the pathology charges to our insurance. Why? Because it didn't benefit their bottom line--just ours. That decision was made without our input or consent. When you're facing a potential health issue, you want transparency and trust. What we got instead was a surprise bill and a sense that profit took precedence over patient care. A benign diagnosis came at a premium price--and Sher Smiles made sure we bore the full burden. That's not just disappointing. It's unethical. We would not recommend this office to anyone seeking honest, compassionate care. Buyer beware.

Over three months ago, I visited Dr. Sullivan for an initial consultation, referred by my general dentist. Dr. Sullivan disagreed with my dentist's treatment plan and mentioned his plan was too aggressive which I understand, but she did not come up with any plan or outline the next steps, leaving me in the dark for months. When I followed up two months later, the office was uncertain about how to proceed and referred me back to my general dentist, who reiterated the original plan and directed me back to Dr. Sullivan. Sullivan finally comes up with a plan but I had some questions to understand the procedure, how long it was going to take, etc. They got annoyed with my questions and told me they could not answer them anymore. Part of the reason I had questions was due to the fact that they kept changing their plans; they first wanted to do Invisalign but then decided braces was better, then they were not sure if partial braces would be better or full. When I asked my questions the receptionist whose name was Sandy told me (in a raised voice) they were done with me and frustrated with my questions and did not want to accept me as a patient anymore. Now that is after over 3 months of no progress or plan. I wish they had decided that 3 months ago. Also, their fee is among the highest in the Northeast Ohio area, quoting $8,280 for metal braces, which seems excessively high, especially considering another orthodontist once assessed my case (when I was 13) as not requiring braces. I currently do need braces, but I believe my situation is not particularly complex, making the quoted price seem even more unreasonable. Their quote did not have a breakdown of the prices and Sandy was not willing to clarify/explain the details related to the quote.

They had a hygienist and a receptionist and that was it running the whole office. Now I have an appointment and I've been sitting here 50 minutes after I was supposed to be seen at 11 o'clock in the morning and still have not been called back. Contrary to popular belief people have lives and when we set an appointment time, that's when we expect to be seen or shortly thereafter you can keep this place. I'm done.
