Unfortunately, it often, if not always, follows the predictable Democratic party line when it comes to commenting on anything outside of entertainment or recreation. Ever wonder what happened to the guys that didn't get through journalism school or couldn't get a job working for a real paper? They work here. To get a paper that "leans" further to the left you would have to go to Berkley. Their political feelings match or in some cases exceed that of Keith Olbermann or Chris Matthews. I read it for comedic value to see how far off base they are. Their music previews/reviews are poorly put together and don't usually tell me anything of what the band is like or what to expect. Their movie reviews basically read the back of the DVD case and the same for books without telling me how the book is. The MKE paper was much better and it's a shame that it went away. However, I'll give the Shep props for making great kindling for the fireplace. read more

THE Milwaukee weekly for all the (local) coverage you won't find in any of the mainstream outlets. Left-leaning, this paper does a nice job of balancing out all the other organizations trying to cover the news with both serious, in-depth coverage of local politics as well as pointed op-ed columns. Also has a great segment dedicated to reviewing anything worth reviewing (movies, restaurants, music acts). Worth picking up even if you're not into being well-informed politically because you'll be well-informed about upcoming concerts and events. read more

I agree with the Dave B. this paper is the best in the city have been to alot of restaurants based on the reviews on the paper I don't read the Journal Sentinel. I am a huge fan of Joel McNally column he speaks the truth. There is a nice coverage of music, restaurants. I have been to alot of resturants based on the reviews. I even found a cousin in a band based in of music reviews-how cool is that. read more

Good paper to find out what is going on in Milwaukee. Other than that, pretty poor journalism. Music reviews are lame. The social and political articles are not even worth reading. The articles are predictable, misguided, and naive. read more

The Shepherd Express is a great free newspaper. The articles on current events especially the state legislature & coming elections are valuable & informative. iMr. McNally's columns are right on about important issues. The entertainment section reviews plays & movies, even older ones, and concerts, ballet, etc. lets us know what is available in Milwaukee. In all, it is an excellent resource for our community. read more
