This review is based on 1 experience - and the service was a 4 layer facial. I bought a Groupon certificate... Positives: 1. I liked Sherri the esthetician - she is experienced and competent. 2. I did not feel pressured to add on serviced (a couple were offered) 3. I was made to feel comfortable and all my questions were answered 4. I was given a coupon to use in the future. 5. I've been getting my hair cut and highlighted at Shelly's for the past 5 years by Dominica and Shelly. They both have done a fabulous job - they are never rushed, have good opinions and suggestions and are very friendly. Salon has a very warm vibe and is located inside an old bank which is unique (it still even has the old vault). I have recently also started bringing my toddler there for haircuts. They are so patient and kind to her. They know how to make her laugh and feel comfortable which makes the experience so much better! It's a great local small family business to support! read more

I've been a customer at Shelly's Salon for a number of years. What prompted me to write a review at this time is the fact that I totally changed my hairstyle this summer. I decided to go short since I was spending the summer at the beach and wanted something low maintenance. My stylist is Sheri and my request was not an easy one based on the type of hair I have. I like this style so much I'm not planning on going back to longer hair. I'm looking at ways to simplify my life and this new hairstyle has helped me do just that. I've gotten quite a few compliments and some people have asked why I didn't do this earlier. One of the things I really like about Sheri is she takes the time up front to ask if I'd like anything different before she starts cutting and then afterwards she makes sure I like what she's done. I would highly recommend Sheri, she's never let me down. I've also had many pedicures with Char and I've been very happy with not only the quality but her color recommendations. Finally, if I need certain products and they don't have any on the shelf, Shelly will make a trip to pick up what I need. I went wed night I told Shelly I would like a hair cut and hi lights done. So I told her I like real light hi lights. And my hair Iam very very particular about my hair. So I told her how I like it . We had a much needed girls weekend early October and came here for Spa Pedicures! The ladies are friendly, funny and AMAZING! The most relaxing, calming pedicure we have ever had! They made our moms weekend out very enjoyable and we wil definetly return here again! Also, not sure what the other reviewer ws referring to.. defnetly GREAT updated decor witha great history to the building.. be sure to ask whats up with the vault! I had one of those salon packages that people go around selling. It was $55 but since I paid with a credit card there was a $3 fee. The girl that sold it to me must have been good at her job because stupid me didn't read the brochure before I bought it and the package sounds worth it. 4 salon treatments and 4 different visits. The Salon is small, clean, easy to find and I believe geared more towards older lady's. A. 30 min intro facial, Upgrade for $30 for an hour. I never had a facial, so I didn't upgrade. I must say this was probably the best part of the package and my favorite. The girl Dominica that did my facial was so nice and knowledgeable. I really liked her. B. Hair- You can get a couple highlights or a clear gloss. I paid the extra $10 for color. My stylist was Chad. He was very nice and did a great job! I had a red tint to my hair and wanted a dark brown but after a couple washes my hair color faded way tooooo quickly and I could see the red tint again after like a week. C. 30 min Reflexology Massage. Which is massaging your hands and feet. Stupid me I thought I was going to get a real massage. $25 extra I could have got a Swedish massage. I passed and didn't even bother doing package C. D. Nails- Manicure. I had an older lady, I think she was the owner or the owners mother. Nice lady. The manicure wasn't bad but wasn't great either. I choose the color Lincoln Park after dark, which is my go to winter color and if you know it is a dark purple but if put on to heavy it looks black... Well my nails looked black! When I got home a had to put some sparkles on top, so it didn't looks so goth. I really wasn't looking to pay extra but if you wanted to get what you actually thought the package was for... You had to pay extra $$ and that's where they trick you. Friendly Salon, but like I said more for older lady's... Don't think I will return. read more

Being a Massage Therapist I am picky on who I have touch me. I purchased a Massage off of Groupon in October (I was in dire straits of a massage). I had a wonderful 60 min massage by a wonderful & polite therapist. I specified where I was having pain and discomfort and she targeted each area with the same amount of pressure to alleviate each muscle. I felt wonderful after I left and would refer anyone to go there for a well deserved massage. read more

I'm surprised to read the negative reviews on here. This review is based on using this salon for my wedding party for hair and makeup. My hair and makeup with Domenica was fabulous. She was attentive to my needs and has a friendly attitude. The trial actually went over the salon hours and she stayed until we were done, the service was never rushed. Day of wedding: She did an amazing job on my hair! It stayed up all day. Mine and the wedding party's' makeup was beautiful. They have their own makeup room which was great for privacy. What I liked about the makeup was they were hygienic. They constantly sprayed the brushes to sanitize every time they used it. I recommend Domenica to do your hair and makeup! read more

I never write reviews but today I got the worst haircut ever. She styled it like I am 90 adding at least 20-30 years to my face and on top of it all my husband had to fix it. She left whole bunch of hair sticks in the back. I paid $40 for this and went home crying. I let my hair grew so I can get my haircut and she totally messed up. I think it was the owner that cut it. She lives in West Chicago. I am not confrontational so I didn't even say anything. Will never go back if you pay me. I am tempted to give this place 3 stars because of their service and friendliness but I just can't bring myself to do it. This little spa and salon is tucked in a small town nestled along the cobblestone streets. If you can imagine your typical small town neighborhood salon with 80's decor, this place is it. I came here to get my hair done for a wedding and my stylist was very accommodating but put way too much product in my hair. I felt like my hair was stiff for most of the day and what's worse is that I felt like I could have recreated my blow dry at home. You would think that this place would be a bit cheaper too compared to the upscale salons in Chicago but it is not, my amigos!!! My wash and blow-dry came out to be $40+! I know that price is pretty standard but I've been to places that are cheaper AND do a much better job. I wouldn't be complaining as much if I was really happy with my 'do, but clearly I was not. If you end up being here, I would suggest trying a different salon in the area. I cannot comment on their spa services. read more

I saw this place on Groupon today and it reminded me of my experience back in the summer of 2010. It is a little humorous to me because I just read the reviews of people who bought the same package I was given (terrible gift) with the hair/facial/nails/massage etc. I remember my first visit was to get a facial and it was my first facial ever. I also did the $10 upgrade for a masque and at the time I thought the experience was okay but I did not know what to expect. (although the facial+masque did not even take the 30 minutes that the package stated). The girl was really nice but I do not remember what her name was. She seemed knowledgeable at the time.......honestly I don't really have anything bad to say about the facial, but she recommended that I go to her brother for a haircut. So that was what I did at the next appointment. His name I remember was Chad! He seemed really nice also and was very personable. My issue with him was that he was on the phone half the time and kept telling the person on the phone that he will be done in 20 min etc. I was thinking wow usually my haircut (wash, cut, dry, style) takes close to an hour. I just requested a trim and layers because I was about to start grad school and we were going to take pictures. What I got was a disaster! He cut off inches of hair and the layers were so choppy. What made it worse was he kept saying "Oh it will look better when I style it, oh I will fix it up." something a long those lines. AS YOU CAN TELL I REMEMBER THIS EXPERIENCE STILL BECAUSE IT REMINDS ME TO NEVER SEE A NEW STYLIST AND JUST TO STICK TO MY OWN. I think he knew he messed up because he started adding pounds of product to my hair. it weighed my hair down so much and it FELT disgusting. He started to blow dry my hair and it seriously looked like a disaster. THEN OUT OF NO WHERE HE STARTED TO CURL MY HAIR!!!!!!!!!!!!! I never requested him to curl my hair or anything, and he just said I am going to curl your hair. I think he was just trying to hide the disaster even more. Either way the "curling" was terrible, when I went home and washed my hair, it looked terrible, and his service was terrible. My hair has never been dyed, very straight, and silky and to be honest, VERY hair to mess up when you know what you are doing...I did not even bother using the rest of the salon package because clearly it was a waste of money. These people ARE really nice but when you are paying money for services, it better be quality services. I am surprised to see that this place is even opened anymore because it did not seem busy at all at that time, but when I saw that there was a groupon for it today I could not resist but to read/write reviews. I hope that things changed since 2010 but from the negative 2012 reviews, I guess they haven't. read more

I am so disappointed with the quality of this salon. I found a living social deal for a keratin treatment, not only did they charge me $20 extra for "extra product" due to my hair length but the treatment was not well applied, burned and broke my hair i have "stubbles" all over my hair and all i got was a "i'm sorry" "this has never happend before" "maybe your had an allergic reaction" and was looked at improper when asked for a refund. After DESTROYING my hair, they did want to "work" with me to get it back to a healthy state, now i have to spend close to an hour 2-3times a week at their salong getting "protein" treatments for my hair. Money and Time waste... i have a wedding in 2months, vacation, summer and NOW I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT I'M GOING TO DO ABOUT MY HAIR.!!!! apology not accepted!!! read more

Shelly does great work and is very accommodating to my schedule. I also like the way the staff treats my 4 year old son, plus he enjoys the lollipops the staff gives him. I noticed Anna's comments. Shelley's salon is located inside the old bank that goes back before the 1980's. It even has the original vault with the door opened so you can see the locking mechanism. Itasca is a small town on the main rail line into Chicago. Anna's memory is a bit questionable since there are no cobblestones. It's understandable how the small town vibe could lead you to think there are cobblestones. Women in heels are safe to walk our streets without getting their heels wedged. read more

I don't normally pamper myself, but a lady on the train mentioned Shelly's in Itasca so I stopped in. Got my nails done, comes with a foot massage and wash. Service was alright, somewhat pricey for a suburb salon, but by the amount of people I saw waiting for hair cuts and what not, it seemed well liked and popular. Maybe it's b/c I don't spend too much $ on myself that I don't see myself coming back, but props for them. And they're a tight family business too, I love family businesses where the employees care about good customer service. read more

I have been going to Shelly's Salon for 3+ years now. I moved here and did not know where to go to get a good haircut. I am very particular about my hair. My husband had bought me a salon package discount card which provided me a variety of services in the salon to try. Shelly is my stylist and she gives amazing haircuts and service. It is a family run business and I choose to support local businesses as opposed to a huge salon. The staff goes out of their way to pamper you. Had my make up done here by I believe Sherry. I don't know how they can even offer make up services here. She brought out like a case a teenager would use to store make up in and was dropping stuff all over the floor and just picked it right back up to use on me. I showed her a picture of what I wanted the make up to look like and she didn't even come close. I looked like a washed out ghost and my real lashes and lower lashes were stuck to the glue on fake lashes she put on. She never even put foundation on me until I told her I felt like a ghost and then she agreed she didn't have me matching my skin tone. She had mascara on the skin under my eyes and didn't even wipe it off. All of the make up was cover girl, maybelline etc. not even high end make up. Had to leave due to a time crunch at that point and got home and my husband even said it was terrible and I should of just done my make up myself. He was irate that I was charged $60 for coming home like that and wanted me to call for a refund. I didn't bother and instead spent the next 25 minutes fixing my make up. 1st time visit and I definitely will go back Chad did my hair and it is perfect He used the clippers and let me tell you he is a master at it. He explained the how and why of what he was doing and I felt great when he was done. He was friendly, funny and cheerful the whole thing was just plain uplifting and I still had time to grab a bite I mean how good is that? Honestly.... I will be back in 6 weeks for the style up keep and will ask for Chad again. I am a mature adult but still want to have some fun at the hair salon well this place delivered that.
