It's…read moreconvenient, very clean, they carry a large selection of not so generic drinks and snacks, there's never a wait for a gas pump, and the family who owns/runs it is super nice and very helpful. Two years ago (in 2007), Houston was on it's way to becoming a gigantic bayou. The entire city. It rained for roughly 83% of the year. Flooding everywhere. Many of those days, it was as if a gigantic water hose (and/or a few fire hoses and buckets mixed in for variety) was turned on full blast and directed at us. On one such day, I and apparently half of Houston thought it wise to leave work early to avoid potential rerouting due to high water. Perfect. Traffic stopped in flooded streets. I decided to stop in at my convenience store/gas station to grab an orange juice before continuing my adventure home. I smartly thought, "I don't want to get my purse wet, I'll just leave it here." I grabbed my wallet and as I stepped into the store, remembered that I shouldn't have put my keys in my purse. I called AAA, but as it was 5:15pm on a Tuesday in a city that was rapidly turning into an extremely large bayou, the wait time was roughly three hours. Thankfully one of the owners was on the ball. While I was on the phone with AAA, he began fashioning a Slim Jim out of a wire hanger. After about five or ten minutes in the rain, he had unlocked my car.

Al's is a convenience store with a solid counter option for a meal. Parking is easy: they've got a couple of reserved spots out front plus a shared lot across the street you can pay for. Inside, there's a good amount of seating, with tables that fit up to four people. We ordered the gyro quesadilla, the half-and-half plate, and two gyro sandwiches with a side of fries. The gyro meat was definitely the star compared to the chicken shawarma, so naturally the quesadilla and sandwiches became our favorites. Surprisingly though, the quesadilla was the standout- the gooey cheese with the gyro was absolute perfection. The chicken shawarma was unfortunately extremely dry. Prices are decent, and the garlic sauce paired well with everything. I just wish we had gotten more than one, since all the other sauces were tzatziki.

The over-the-counter setup, paired with the option to grab a cold drink from the refrigerated section at the back, adds to the charm of this place inside Montrose. I've ordered the gyro plate here a few times with no complaints. The meat is flavorful with a side of rice, hummus, pita bread, and cucumber salad. The hummus has just the right amount of oil, and the portions overall are satisfactory. I'm a big fan of the Cajun-seasoned fries, too. Still need to try their kabobs and shawarmas. There are a few tables for dining in, but it's definitely more of a takeout spot. The service is straightforward - you place your order, get your ticket, and pay at the front. Definitely be coming back if I'm in the area
