Driving back from Brooklyn I always get gas on the NJ Turnpike. My son wanted to push it as long as we could.
I always take Hwy 13 after the Delaware Memorial Bridge. It consists of surface streets through the outskirts of Newark, DE but has numerous places for gas & rest stops before Delaware One. My son always takes the bypass which dumps you directly on Delaware One. There are no easy access stops from that expressway until you get to Dover.
He suddenly said "We need gas now." So we started looking for an exit.
This Shell Station was in the out parcels of Christiana Mall. It had a food mart. So I went in for a bathroom stop. Not seeing signs I asked the clerk. His response was "outside". I've seen the entrance doors to bathrooms outside the building before. It's not optimal. But it would work.
My response "Oh, the doors are outside" was met with "No, Port-A-Potty." My eyes must have gotten as big as saucers because he repeated it to make sure I understood.
He was very nice & apologetic, offering a number of nearby fast food restaurants that I could go to for an inside bathroom, which I did.
The gas at the Shell was also priced higher than the Service Areas on the NJ Turnpike.
The moral of this story is "Don't ever wait to get gasoline until you're on Delaware One." You'll regret it. read more
