This is a no kill shelter and I shudder to think of the volunteers and donations that bypassed this facility because of an uninformed review. Although this facility is staffed by caring people, there are just not enough hands to go around. They are always recruiting volunteers to help with their many programs. It's an absolute tragedy that Shelby humane would rather allow a senior cat live out it's life in a cage rather than let a loving person give the cat some resemblance of a quality of life. Such a shame and shame on Shelby Humane.i used to be supportive...no longer.. read more

This is one of the largest animal shelters I've been to. There are so many dogs here! Unfortunately this shelter isn't very clean, and the workers here didn't really go as above and beyond as we would have liked. We had selected a dog named Snow White. Then afterwards the lady there said that she wasn't ready yet. After we left we thought we should have been able to put a hold on here or been able to give her our information so we could take her home when she was ready. read more

Went to Shelby Humane Society and i don't regret it for one second. I got to adopt my new fur baby, Hermes. He's such a sweetheart and so loving. At first he was very shy, and very timid to look around the house, but he's slowly coming out of his shell and he's the happiest he's ever been. Every single person in that facility were so helpful and very attentive. And yes. He did take over the bean bag, even tho he has his own room BEST DECISION I HAVE EVER MADE. read more

Ms. Ivey and Staff--please remember you are each such a special human being to care for God's precious creatures There are so many of us grateful for your dedication and hard work and for the love and care you give those who depend totally upon you for their care and lives. Our gratitude is measureless. I was blessed and elated with the addition of SIX greatgrandbabies in 2022. Than came my 87th birthday March 2023. That birthday was accompanied by pronounced deterioration in my cognitive and physical abilities. I owned 2 dogs. Toby is a highly energetic 3 year old Beagle/American Blue Heeler mix and Gypsy is a nine year old terrier mix. I was falling a great deal and unable to even take them out prn during the day. Two of my adult children helped me clear out my small condo and also clean up the foul smell we had inside. "We all knew I had gotten too old to properly care for my beloved dogs. My heart was broken in at least one million pieces knowing I had to let my beloved Birmingham family "go". We decided on surrendering them to Shelby County Humane Society for several reasons; i e that's where "Toby was originally and the no-kill status appealed to me because of Gypsy's age. Such a sad sad low time for this old greatgrandmother. My 2 adult children took Toby & gypsy to Shelby County Humane Society and I wrote a letter asking if Veronica (Gypsy's owner) and I could drive down and visit with them. My heart was lifted tremendously when I received a phone call in answer to my letter by Ms. Saundra Ivey, Executive Director of SCHS. Ms. Ivey was very understanding and kind and courteous and assured me "Toby & "gypsy were very happy there at SCHS. Veronica and I made 2 trips to Columbiana to visit our beloved canines and these visits lifted my heavy heart and soul even more. Toby and Gypsy were having such a happy time and it was obvious they were being fed and cared for and loved consistently. Veronica and I were elated and so relieved. The staff who assisted us were exceptional and we remain very grateful. In about 2 weeks I was notified by Ms. Ivey Toby & Gypsy had been adopted and together and that was such good news. I asked Ms. Ivey to please give the new owner my phone number and if she/he would just phone me & let me know Toby and Gypsy were adjusting to the change in a positive way. Ms. Ivey did relay my phone number and I am awaiting a phone call from the new owner whenever she has a few minutes. I will be so grateful to hear about my beloved dogs I miss with all of my broken heart. Thank you, new owner for phoning me and just leaving me a voice message. I will be eternally grateful. Ms. Ivey, you have helped tremendously in making a very sad but necessary change for me much more acceptable. Thank you for your time and courtesy and kindness and understanding. I will be eternally grateful to you, also. You are such a special human being and I thank and praise God for you and for your work at SCHS. we love Shelby Humane! We visit often and scroll through their adoptable pets frequently! We adopted our Sophie girl last year immediately after seeing her added to the website, we dropped everything and adopted her! She was on a stray hold so we had to wait 7 days until she could come home, with hopes that her original owner found her. we are so thankful for our furry family member and love her more and more each day! The Shelby Humane staff is wonderful, they're so kind and extremely welcoming! You can tell that the girls love the animals and truly care about them! Compared to most shelters, I find Shelby Humane to be quite clean, the dogs kennels are clean, there is typically not feces in their kennels and they always have fresh water in their bowls! The cats are also very well taken care of, fresh litter, food and water with toys in the cages! This is a NO KILL SHELTER, they do not euthanize animals here and they really take care of and showcase their older friends! We were able to adopt sophie for $40, I think their was a special at the time, that included her getting spayed and microchipped along with a coupon book that included a free bag of food (coupon)! We will 100% adopt from Shelby Humane again when the time comes and the right animals speaks to our family! We adopted our sweet cat from Shelby Humane about 5-6 years ago. The adoption process was easy and Butterscotch (formally Suzy) is a fantastic cat! We are dog people, (my daughter wanted a cat) so our cat practically became one of the dogs. She is top "dog" around here. Three of our 4 animals are rescues. Butterscotch was our first, and if I could rescue every needy animal I came across, I would. She started something! There are so many loving, sweet animals that need a home. I highly encourage you to adopt your next pet from Shelby Humane, or another rescue...you will not regret it! read more

To be fair, the staff was very nice and seemed to care for the animals they had there. However, their lack of education about the animals in their care and their complete misrepresentation of the truth nearly cost an amazing dog his life. How? We recently adopted a wonderful dog from them and at the time the staff told us he was 10 years old. They also told us they thought he was actually more like 8 or 9 years old, but labeled him as 10 y/o because of his bad teeth. Luckily, we were actually looking for an older dog as a companion to our 9-year-old​ dog, so we adopted him. Shortly thereafter we took him to a proper vet who told us not only is there nothing wrong with his teeth but he is actually 3 or 4 years old, probably closer to 3. I shudder to think that since most older dogs get put down because they don't get adopted, this wonderful boy could have died due to either carelessness or an appalling lack of education on the part of the staff here. Either way, I will forever be grateful for finding this gem of a dog, but I want others to know just how close these people came to getting a pup killed! read more
