This park went through a facelift that was completed in May 2023, and it now includes a cool splash pad, a modern playground, picnic shelter and other amenities. I love a new playground, and I love when the city invests in parks, because it means it is investing in families. My only beef is that this playground has zero shade, unless you're lucky enough to be sitting in the shaded picnic shelter. When we visited, it was a bright, sunny day, and not only was there no shade for the parents and caregivers to stand under, but the playground equipment was hot to the touch, and my children -- who will typically ignore things like hot monkey bars in the name of fun -- gave up on playing after a short while because the bars were just too hot on their hands. It's a shame, because the playground equipment looked super fun. So maybe this is a playground to visit on cooler days. This park is located right on the Monon Trail, so you can see people running as you're playing at the park. It's just south of a great place to get coffee (Provider), so if you need a little pick-me-up before you watch your children play on the playground, you know where to go.

It could use some landscaping, emptying of trash cans and renovation of the fields and tennis courts. They have a community center, a ball field, tennis courts in the back and an aquatic center. They also have a playground and two covered pavilions that you can rent for events. The pavilions do come with some strict rules though. The pavilions and their picnic tables are in dire need of a thorough pressure washing. You can however, fish in the lake. I saw someone doing it while I was there, but I am not sure how well stocked it is though. On a positive note, the recreation staff is very friendly and there is ample parking. The lake has blue benches all around that you can stop, rest and take it all in. There are ducks all over the place....I really mean all over the place. Almost too many of them.

The complex is home to Northeast Youth Soccer League, FC Pride Soccer Club, Cathedral other amenities; home High School, Lawrence Central High School and Bishop Chatard High School. When there is events, tournaments or other happenings going on the complex's snack bar will more than likely be open. They carry your typical snack bar stuff like candy, drinks, and hot dogs. Outside of vast green space, and soccer fields, some of which were lighted, you will also find a nice paved path that goes around the fields. I saw a few people using it to work out while I was there. The fields appeared to be a bit neglected while I was there. Some of the, had rash and used water bottles and needed to be mowed. A decent place to host soccer games, especially tournaments. The complex is massive. There is tons of parking, divided between a couple of lots. I hope I caught it off season or on a bad day and that they normally do periodic maintenance and up keep of the fields and complex, which is my only major gripe.

Interestingly enough, they have a skate park here, which I thought was neat. The playground is also nice, but a bunch of the slides are made of metal. The walking trails are also quite nice as well. The main reason that I come here for is the disc golf course. Although I've only done two courses, that being this and the one at Cumberland Park at the time of writing, so I still haven't been to many courses. The front 9 are really nice, as 4 holes wrap around a lake, and 3 are in a wooded area. The back 9 are in a mostly open area, and there's a creek that runs alongside a couple holes. The landscaping in that part of the course could use some attention. However, it's still a nice park to visit. Also, the lake and creek can 'eat' your disc if you aren't aware.

There is also a restroom facility that is open durning park season. The park is named after Bertha Ross, a woman that along with her husband created a kids neighborhood baseball league on that site to keep the kids off the street and give them something productive to do. The pavilion is a bit flimsier than other similar one, but is still nice and has a grill. It can host approximately 50 people. You can reserve the pavilion for special events. Otherwise it is a first come first served. The playground floor is covered with wood chips to cushion the little ones falls. They have some decent equipment. a set of older style swings, a cargo net tower, a saucer swing, and a jungle gym with a few slides coming from it. The basketball courts are nice and have the most bleacher seating that I have seen in a long time at an outdoor court. Both courts are also in good repair and relatively nice. Additionally, the half court appears that it can be lowered. there is lots of ope space at this park, but much of it is not flat and has hills ditches and gullyes. You could still find a solid spot to play catch, fly a kite, kick a ball around or have a picnic. This park is a solid park. However, it does lack a running trail, but you can make your own path if you wanted. It is also located right off of a main drag so it is not as not very calm or quiet. All in all I like this park, but probably would not make a special trip to come here.

If you go on a day when there isn't a game, the parking looks endless along the main road that runs through the park. However, if you think about how many kids are involved in a single game and how many parents drive to watch them, you can see forty spots (probably more) for each field being used. With multiple games occurring at a time and with the "nose in" style parking, finding a place, dodging pedestrians who are carrying stadium seats and coolers, well, you can imagine it's tough finding a spot and tough backing out. Parking at the nearby school is an option, but carrying lots of equipment, back supports, and other items can get heavy. Review #2716

The fields and dugout are well maintained and there are several batting cages you can use. Additionally there is an out building and playground. But oy parking...what a mess. In ball season...if you want to park near the fields forget it. It is a complete clusterbomb of cars wherever. Seriously bad planning on the part of the parks department. Presumably you can park at the high school and walk (maybe that was the intent?) but they rope off the soccer field just north and it's a bit of a hike. And I didn't see anyone walking from there...they were just trying to get situated closer to the fields. All in all...a nice entry to the parks department that is IMO packed in an area way too small for intended use.
