Seeing Dr Ellen Meisner and Dr Sheri DeSchaaf was instrumental in my speedy recovery after birthing baby two, both on a physical and mental level. I couldn't have asked for better support. SheFit PT is led by women and genuinely focused on the holistic wellbeing of women. I went to SheFit PT to correctly rebuild my core after a pregnancy that was heavier on my body than my first and that had brought diastasis recti (abdominal separation) with it. I had stayed active and was doing HIIT during my entire pregnancy, up until labor started, but I knew I had to be very wise about the weeks and months after the birth of my baby. I went to see them to avoid rushing back into movement blindly and potentially worsening ab separation. Few months into post partum, my body felt very overworked and fatigue. I couldn't quite figure out what was wrong and my primary suggested I see a PT. Sheri was referred to me by another PT in LA for her specialty and experience in women's health. I had tension in my neck and lower back and she also diagnosed that I had a mild case of diastasis recti. Sheri is very flexible and resourceful. She gave me a few baby sitter's numbers so I can have someone watch my baby in the next room while I'm getting physical therapy. It worked out really well because I can focus during the session knowing my baby is fine in the room next door. Some of her mama patients do bring their babies without sitter and Sheri accommodate to their needs as well. I went through about 2 months of PT and home exercises. During those months, Sheri was very attentive to my posture, tension, and recovery, making sure that the exercises are done correctly and the right amount, so my body is healing correctly and not being overworked. I've been to other PT clinics before where it feels like the clock is ticking - sit in the waiting room for your name to be called, get 30 min with the PT and 30 min with the aide. Met with Dr. DeSchaaf yesterday and had an extremely positive experience. I went in because I am 2.5 months postpartum and I thought I had diastasis recti, which has a big impact on what exercises you can do to recover from pregnancy. Right away, she made me feel welcome and not self conscious of my postpartum belly. Once we got back to the room, Dr. DeSchaaf asked me what I knew about diastasis recti and then gave me a full explanation of what it was, how it happens, and how it can be corrected. I was extremely impressed with the breadth of knowledge she had on the subject. I also likes the fact that she is also a mother and understood the challenges that I am facing. Dr. DeSchaaf next asked me how I was breastfeeding. This is critical bc it's how I spend a lot of my days being only 2 months postpartum. She gave me some tips on breastfeeding posture, which were helpful and easily implemented. Dr. DeSchaaf then assessed my current physique (confirmed I had diastasis recti, checked my posture, flexibility, and alignment) and then went through several exercises with me, making sure I fully grasped each exercise before moving on to the next. She also stopped along the way to make sure I didn't have any questions. After going through the exercises, she thoroughly reviewed with me which exercises to avoid. She personally assessed my form in a few exercises to determine whether they were safe for me to do. Throughout the appointment, Dr. DeSchaaf made it clear that she wanted me to get the most out of my hour-long appointment. It was clear she wanted to make sure I felt I was getting individualized treatment. At the end of the appointment, she gave me some encouragement to not be so hard on myself and to be patient with my body. Very affirming and positive. The next day, she emailed me a PDF of all the exercises. Extremely helpful after going through the exercises with her in person. I started seeing Dr. Sheri for pelvic floor therapy regarding some post-partum issues I was having. Dr. Sheri was very attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. Dr. Sheri is one of the top things I have ever done for myself! I went to a free workshop of hers shortly after I found out I was expecting our third baby. I knew I had some tummy issues after the second one, but was unsure of what was going on and had no idea that there was actually help out there. Being a first time mom I didn't know what to expect for postpartum recovery. I found myself dealing with hip, leg and lower back pain and didn't know where to start! Dr. Sheri is amazing! I recently had my 6th baby this May. After every pregnancy I had this pooch that just never went away, after my 4th pregnancy after working out pretty vigorously (doing crossfit type exercise) I could never seem to get my baby pooch to go away, I permanently looked 4 months pregnant. My core wasn't strong and I just didn't feel great about myself no matter what exercise I did. My OB said suggested when I was done having kids to get my abs sewn back together to correct my diastasis recti (what was causing the baby pooch in my gut). Getting your body back after having a baby is obviously not an easy task. What I didn't know is that it is also a very specific task. I have been here 3x now to see Vera and Anna and am already really impressed with the way each appointment goes, the exercises given that build on each other in small, incremental ways as my body gets better, and the general encouraging and supportive demeanor of each therapist regardless of what issue we are focusing on throughout the appointment(s). I had seen a PT 2x after my last pregnancy when I realized I had diastasis recti that wasn't going to close on its own. I did the exercises she gave me for a month straight and felt like I wasn't getting anywhere. They were also really hard for me to do (hold my abs together with my hands during different exercises - not easy!!) and I kept worrying I was making things worse or not sure if I was doing them right. I've searched online and read tons of articles about diastasis recti, but after this last baby, and she is my last(!!), I decided I wanted real help. I can say there is no comparison to the help I'm getting now and I feel it's very worth the $. I have pelvic floor issues, crazy stiffness in my back and hips, and diastsis recti. The hardest part for me currently is just finding the time to do the exercises with a 4mo old baby, a 4, and a 5year old, but everything at SheFit has been phenomenal. I just may take a little longer to get the relief that I can honestly see ahead of me because it's hard to find the time to do what's required to heal.... and I seem to have a lot of issues.
