Magical view off one of the trails near the dog park
    Jeff M.

While it's a bit annoying to get yelled at by a ranger for having my dog off leash about 100 feet from the field where you're allowed to let them roam free, this still remains near the top for me in terms of the best places on the North Shore to take your dog friend. The location and entrance is super easy to find, it's right off of Rt 28 between Stoneham and Medford (across from the 93S exit ramp). The problem is, parking in either of the two main lots can be packed depending on the time and day of the week you go. Early in the morning? Usually not a problem, get there before 10 AM on the weekends. After work, right before sunset? Also usually a good time to go? Avoid at all costs "peak times" during the weekend though, you'll end up not finding anything, getting frustrated and making up your own spot only to come back to a parking ticket. At least when we had a dog meetup here once, the ranger came over to tell us they would be ticketing cars parked illegally and they had to be moved instead of just doling them out. Did you arrive at a weird time and no other dogs are around? Head into the woods behind the large field and take a trail walk. Again, watch out for rangers who may yell at you for not having the dog on leash. There are about 5-6 different entrance points into the Fells trails. There are public water sources surrounding it so you are a little limited to where you can go but there is a nice hike to Bear Hill Tower from here which will take you about 15 minutes. The weekends can have anywhere from 5-50 dogs at a time and there seems to be a "pack mentality" that brews once the number of dogs reaches 20 or more. So be prepared for that, if your dog can be aggressive or timid, I wouldn't recommend visiting at a peak time. The good thing is, you can keep your dog away from many of the others if you decide to just throw a ball, it's easily 1/4 mile long from end to end, if not more than that. Bring doggie bags and for crying out loud, take it with you. I don't know why people think it's ok to leave bags of dog feces all around for someone to pick up after them, what's so hard in taking it out when you leave? There are also no places to get water for your pal so your best bet is to bring a big communal bowl or bring lots of water and someone has probably left or has a bowl there already. Put aside a half hour for your dog to go crazy with others or 3-4 hours if you want to hit the trails with them and combine it with some play. All around, it's the perfect place for the both of you to burn off some extra calories. *Woof, slurp, grunt, howl, pant*

    So many dogs at 830am!!

Ask the Community - Sheepfold Dog Park

Can someone please kindly post the accurate gps address to this park? I have been here once, I ended up asking for directions with several people and finally made my way here. But now I forgot how to return

The 93 S on ramp is right next to it. Take Exit 33 off 93 N. There’s a set of lights you come to with Friendlys on your left and a Speedway on your right. Make a U-turn and just keep driving , it will be on your right hand side. Safe travels.

Personal Experience with Pet Pals…read more A few years ago, I was walking some dogs at the Fells near the Winford Way entrance in Medford. While we were there, Dave -- the owner of Pet Pals -- approached me. He seemed upset that I was walking in that area, saying I "didn't understand" the rules and that it was his designated spot to walk dogs, implying that no one else was allowed there. I reminded him that it's public land and open to everyone. At that point, he became physically aggressive and pushed me twice -- the second time hard enough that I lost control of my dogs' leashes. He then ran toward my dogs and appeared to try to scatter them, so they'd run off. I called the police, who arrived, spoke with both of us, and said something along the lines of, "There are three sides to every story." I decided not to pursue it further at the time and just moved on. I recently came across Pet Pals again, and I felt people should have the full picture before deciding whether to use this company. This is my personal experience, shared in good faith so others can make their own decisions. Hopefully, others have had better luck with Dave, the owner of Pet Pals -- formerly based in Winchester and now operating out of Woburn, as far as I know.

There's no water fountain for your pups to have fresh water after playing. Parking lot is available upon entering and is decent size for multiple vehicles. More than anything I love that they have few trails and makes it fun to walk your pup with abundance grass for them to smell and play on. My dodo loves playing on the grass and we have walked on the short trails while he sniffs everything on his way. I personally feel it's a great park for a brisk walk with your dodo. My rating is exclusively based on the trials overall and taking 1 star away for the dog ranch area.

There is parking and nearby bike paths. While there are lots of open fields nearby, the fenced in areas of the dog park itself are small. There is an area for small dogs, separate from that of big dogs, but they are both small areas. The big dog area could stand to be much larger. The ground is gravel/packed dirt... pebbles would be better. I can see this being muddy and have heard some owners complain the gravel is too sharp for paws. The entry/exit points of the enclosures are not the usual "airlock" system with two gates, but a separate entry/exit which did not keep other dogs from trying to escape with us when we left. There is one bench for people to sit on, more benches would be nice. There is a trash can. There is currently no water, but I have heard that there are plans to add that in the spring. There are fun things for dogs to run over and around, and someone has stocked the pens with tennis balls, but the best things dogs like to play with is the other dogs. Our dog was very happy to play with everyone! This new park was already very busy with dogs on a Sunday afternoon. If we really want our dog to get some exercise, we would probably still go to Beaver Brook or Cat Rock Pak where there is more space to run, but this is a good option for play time! I hope Waltham listens and continues to make this park even better!

We walked a bit to the right and there were so many dogs - it must be an unofficial dog park, or happy hour for the dogs. They were all so cute. My friend had come before so he recommend we walk to Wright's Tower since it gives a vast view of the neighboring houses and landscape but also Boston in the far distance. It was a perfect hike of about 45 minutes there, and about an hour back since we did trailblaze a bit. We were following a GPS, but there are colors and signs periodically on the trees to guide you through the trails. I wouldn't say its too scenic, but it is relaxing and the terrain is perfect, with some spots being intermediate level but mostly all of it being beginner or easy. We did see some people on bikes, and others jogging. When we got to the tower, we went inside and climbed the stairs to the top. From there, you can look out in all directions to get some really nice views. It is worth the climb. We plan on eventually going back and trying longer or more challenging trails. But overall I think it's a gem that isn't too far from the city.
