You can't really imagine a more beautiful sight in downtown Harrisburg, than these stunning bridges crossign the river. This is one of the beautiful old bridges that spans this gorgeous stretch of water. The cool thing is, this is a pedestrian bridge! How awesome is that? I bet you didn't even think those existed in the US. It no longer crosses the river because portions collapsed in 96 due to flooding, and it was never restored. Now it's open to pedestrians, basically as a long pier on either side.

From the fabulous views of the bay, all the way down the massive spiral staircase, you can smell the history, that is the Gap Lighthouse. The gift shop was well stocked with lighthouse memorabilia. Kids' toys, snacks, and museum quality sculptures and paintings. There is even a washroom attendant! It is centrally located in the city of Gap, and with hardly any traffic, it is a breeze to walk just about anywhere! One thing that was missing, was an Inn at the lighthouse. Maybe "Inn" the future??

I'd seen photos of the cliffs the previous fall and immediately added them to my ever-growing "I need to go there" list. Fast forward to an early August Thursday when I had a day off work and was planning a full Lancaster County adventure. Naturally, the White Cliffs became the very first stop of the day. Before heading out, I did a little homework. There are two common ways to reach the cliffs via the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail. The shortest route begins at Koser Park in Bainbridge and is a 1.5-mile walk or bike ride heading south. You can also start from Riverfront Park, which is about a 3-mile walk or ride heading north. I opted for Koser Park, and when I pulled in just before 8am, I found plenty of parking and was immediately greeted by beautiful views of the Susquehanna River before I even started walking. The trail couldn't have been easier to follow. It's wide, completely paved and almost entirely flat, making it perfect for walkers, runners and cyclists of just about any skill level. I was so excited to finally see the cliffs that I found myself walking much faster than I normally do. About a mile and a half down the trail, I reached the remains of the Billmeyer company town, followed almost immediately by the White Cliffs rising about 30 feet above the Susquehanna River. One of the coolest things I learned is that the cliffs aren't actually a natural formation. They're the remnants of a limestone and dolomite quarry that dates back to the mid-1800s. Across the railroad tracks sit the ruins of the old limestone factory and what remains of the Billmeyer ghost town, which was abandoned after the quarry closed in the 1950s. Nature has slowly reclaimed the entire area, creating this fascinating mix of industrial history and natural beauty that makes the visit feel even more special. What surprised me most? I had the entire place to myself! Not another person. On a gorgeous August morning. I happily wandered around taking photos, shooting panoramic videos and simply soaking in the peace and quiet. It felt like one of those magical travel moments where you can't quite believe you have such a beautiful place all to yourself. One word of caution, though...there are very few barriers or safety features around the cliffs themselves. If you're visiting with young children or dogs, keep a close eye on them. The drop to the river below is very real, and while the township has determined the area is safe to visit, there are still remnants of the old quarry and industrial site scattered around, so paying attention to where you're walking is a good idea. By the time I headed back toward the parking lot, I couldn't stop thinking about how perfect this would be for a picnic. Sunrise. Sunset. A sandwich. A blanket. And that incredible view of the Susquehanna. Honestly, I might need to start a Pennsylvania Picnic Bucket List, because the White Cliffs of Conoy would immediately earn the very first spot! The White Cliffs of Conoy turned out to be every bit as beautiful as I'd hoped they would be. Sometimes those places you've been dreaming about for months really do live up to the hype. And this was definitely one of them!

Taught in Liberia, 1857-61. Recruited Black soldiers in Civil War; noted as war correspondent. In Europe for freedmen's aid; was admitted to the English bar in 1870. Held major posts in Louisiana, 1873-83. Died nearby, 1892." At the age of 16, Chester attended Akron College, an African-American academy in Pittsburgh. In 1853, he moved to Monrovia Liberia where he attended Alexander High School and then returned to the United States in 1854 where he enrolled at Thetford Academy in Vermont. He later returned to Liberia where he taught school to Africans of former American slaves. During the Civil War, Chester served as a recruiter of black troops and raised the 54th and 55th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. The monument does have several features that make it stand out. 1. It's located directly across from the Lancaster County Convention Center, so it's easy to access. 2. It's located almost in the middle of the street with busy roads surrounding all sides but one. 3. It's been updated with more plaques and new information as more conflicts have occurred. Take a second to read the plaques when walking by, they provide interesting information about the conflicts.

The 1744 Treaty of Lancaster between the British and Iroquois was signed at this very spot in the old Lancaster courthouse. On September 27, 1777 the Second Continental Congress met in that same building, which burned down just 6 years later. Originally designed as a tribute to Lancastrian Union soldiers killed during the American Civil War, the statue now also represents those who have served in subsequent American military conflicts. Basically, if you fight for our country, Lancaster will honor you with a giant stone penis on top of which a robed woman sporting a sword and crown of stars called the "Genius of Liberty" turns her back on the defeated confederacy. Oh yeah, and there's 4 little men at the shaft representing the branches of the armed forces. Totally overshadowed by the badass penis climbing lady. Take a look next time you're in town.
