The Candle Store - Rustic Candles

My friend has been talking about The Candle Store for months and months, telling me how good it is…read moreand that I need to visit. I absolutely love candles and now and again will treat myself to a Yankee Candle (or steal one from my mum). Although Yankee's smell good enough to eat, and last for hours upon hours, they're just not very bank balance friendly and as a student I can't really justify the prices even though the smells are always amazing. I've tried various different candle makes and nothing really seems to compare which is why I am SO happy that I found The Candle Store. Situated just across the road from Govan Underground it makes it easy to locate if you don't have a car. Even though it's quite a small shop there are literally hundreds of candles to choose from, I was easily there for 25 minutes. The woman who was working was so nice and helpful and she showed me a few of her favourite candles which all smelled amazing! I liked the fact that I was left to browse under no pressure to buy anything but I knew that if I needed help there was someone to ask who was very easy to approach. I was even given a few tips on how to make my candle last longer! What's more, the shop is beautiful decorated with candles lit in various corners which adds to the excellent attention to detail and makes the shop very welcoming indeed. Eventually, I opted for a large amber and rose candle at a ridiculously reasonable £3! I'm sure it will burn for days and the smell is amazing. It reminds me of the Thierry Mugler Angel perfume, and when I woke up this morning my whole room smelled delicious and it hasn't even been lit yet! When I purchased my candle it was wrapped in pretty pink tissue paper with "The Candle Store" card on it which I thought was a really nice touch - perfect for gifts. There's even a gift wrapping service with beautiful boxes and ribbons to choose from. In addition to basic candles for around the home there are candles specifically designed for gift ideas with flowers wrapped around them, in cute little tins and gift boxes too. I can't wait to tell my friend that I eventually paid a visit to The Candle Store and I will definitely be back!

I adore candles but I've never bought high quality candles... until now. I visited Shearer Candle's…read moreand had a tour around the factory (which they arrange). I saw first hand how the family company create the candles from scratch and the methods they do it in. It was fascinating! After the tour, I went into their shop to smell all the different types of candles that they have on offer and they couldn't resist name dropping a few of their famous clients; Madonna, Janet Jackson and George Michael to name a few. In fact, George Michael buys CRATES of the Persian Lime fragrance candles, so I couldn't resist grabbing that for myself. The candles are very high quality and they smell amazing. My favourites have to be Persian Lime, Watermelon, Winter Fig (a christmas variety) and then Amber Noir. As well as having the main shop with the high quality candles (large ones are around £15), they also have the "seconds" area where candles that haven't passed the final quality inspection are sold at reduced price e.g. instead of £15, it's £8 etc. If you love candles, you really need to go for a visit... and even better... it's a local company!

The majority of the goodies are candles from Skye, which by the way smell delightful (vanilla, lavender, lemon grass etc). Besides candles I found some bath and shower gels, tea, scents and soaps. I very much liked the lavender and lemongrass smell and will be back to actually get some. The prices are not cheap (£6.95 for a liquid soap, £7.95 for shower gel), but you definitely get good quality products. I can recommend this shop for buying gifts for any sorts of celebration or if you are a sucker for fine and expensive smells and goods, then this is the shop to look out for :-)

Paper Plane is one of them, especially if you're looking for a gift (for yourself, or someone else). There's nice crafting kits, as well as lots of things for kids. They had on display a Lisa Donati (formerly Psychopants) tea towel - "You will always find me in the kitchen at parties" which always makes me giggle, so obviously they're stocking local artists which is great to see. I'd recommend you spend a day of your weekend heading to check out some of the delights of Skirving Street and make sure that you leave plenty of time for a nosey around here! As Jennie H mentioned, it probably is on the pricier side but it's worth a look all the same.

An eclectic mix of moomin candle whirlers, ipad desks, quirky jewellery, amazing cards and everything in-between. Well worth a wander if you are searching for the illusive gift for that hard to buy for sod at the bottom of your Christmas list who wants for nothing. I was in for stocking fillers for the girls and did not leave disappointed. Smudge is going to be utterly delighted with her scarf wearing panda necklace and Santa was pleasantly surprised at the less than terrifying price tag. With the additional 10% check in discount I felt positively virtuous and absolved of all the sinning I had just been committing in Waterstones. Where my restrained buying for other people plans had failed spectacularly. By the time I had reached the till I had already decided this was going to be a five star review but then the wonderful staff at the till tried to help me lug the buggy up the stairs. I say tried because I may have been using the handy basket at the bottom of the buggy to hide all the books bought in Waterstones, meaning that the buggy weighed more than a family hatchback and actually couldn't be lifted even by two people and Puff just had to suck up bumped up the stairs. A great wee shop that I'll probably be back in again before Christmas. If only because I need some of the amazing Christmas cards with huge Rudolph noses and really my tree isn't going to be finished until I have a rocket decoration hanging from it. I didn't even know I needed a rocket tree decoration, well now I do...

Situated inside Princes Square, you are greeted warmly 'Welcome to the World of Jo Malone' and their intention is clear: to make you feel as welcome as possible because let's be honest...who visits Jo Malone other than to purchase a gift/treat for themselves? The shop smells INCREDIBLE and it should do because they have so many nice fragrances that clearly work together. The table directly infront of you houses sample candles/perfumes of each of their most popular fragrances which you can sample. On either side, there are shelves stacked beautifully (and very precisely; everything has a place) of various lotions and other products they offer. The till counter is to the left hand side and to the right, there is an area where you can receive complimentary arm and hand massages. I knew exactly what I wanted but I took the time to smell the other candles. In my opinion, nothing is as good as the Wood Sage & Sea Salt though and the girl very kindly boxed and bagged the candle for me. Yeah £42.95 is perhaps crazy for a candle...but it's worth every penny. I love it. I also got myself booked in for an arm and hand massage which I'm really looking forward to! The girl who served me was lovely and took the time to chat to me on a more personal level then just a customer which I really appreciated. The nicest touch came the following day though when a hand written card came through the post thanking me for my custom. A little much? I don't think so actually. It rounded off my treat quite nicely and I'm heading back soon to pick up the perfume.

I've been looking for something for dehydrated skin (the bane of my life) and decided to pop in here to see if I could get some help. Now this review was nearly a 2-star because the staff initially seemed a bit like they couldn't be assed and I was struggling to catch someone's else even though I'd been loitering in the skin care area for ages. Finally I got someone to help me and she was great - actually really helpful, showing me the products and happily gave me decent sized mini tubs to take home and try. I mean, if I'm going to spend £60 on moisturiser, I want to make sure it's amazing. This store is also a lot bigger than I expected and has a range of candles/bubble baths. They stock NARS, Laura Mercier and stunning Shu Uemura eyelashes that will definitely make a statement. The staff are very helpful and you can get free consultations on the best products for your skin and tips on getting a flawless complection. I was once put in the direction of "Dr. Seabagh Foaming Cleanser" after a couple of months of breakout hell. I'd tried everything and this was a last resort, It wasn't cheap, £22 for 100ml bottle and I was sceptical but I decided to give it a go. It cleared up my skin in about 5 days, it was like a miracle! I swore by the stuff for nearly two years but then I moved to Germany for ten months and it stopped working. It could have been the water there but I haven't used it since. I might pop back soon to give it another shot as when it worked the results were fantastic and I'd recommend it to anyone who is looking for quick results for breakouts. As far as I'm aware Space NK is the only stockist in Glasgow, hurrah! They used to stock loads of Philosophy products but they don't have so many anymore. My favourite purchase from here was a lipgloss set from Philosophy which was called "A Few Good Men", these men were, "The Muffin Man" - a lemon muffin flavoured lipgloss, "The Gingerbread Man" - a tasty gingerbread lipgloss and my favourite, "The Ice-Cream Man." Unfortunately they don't have this set anymore, but who knows, maybe one day they'll make a return. Space NK is great, quite expensive but sometimes you need to pay that little bit extra when it comes to cosmetics. They also do sales now and then so you could grab yourself a bargain!
