Why is this store still open..only show in town..need competition..produce is far from fresh..fruit flies..have to watch dates on meat..

On the morning of July 4th I entered the store. I'm usually greeted by Jimmy in the produce department. For over 20 years this exemplary employee has asked if I needed help finding something or has asked if his cart was in the way of my shopping, or gone to the back to see if there was an item I couldn't find. That was not the case on July 4th at approximately 7:30am. Instead I was subjected to having to listen to a "Sara" and a "Chelsey" complain about other employees. Chelsey wasn't working. Just talking. At least Sara was stocking. I had many items to get. I wasn't greeted or asked if I needed help. Instead I felt as though I was eavesdropping and it was extremely uncomfortable. They were not whispering by any means. This went on for 10 minutes. Something about a guy named Scott and Chelsey having moved from the Ludlow Store and yada yada. The conversation then continued down in the deli area with Katie. (I've been subjected to having to listen to Katie and Flo in the early Sunday morning hours in the bakery and deli area as well. Just never complained). Skip to the milk and cheese area. An older woman with a mask and long hair is complaining to a customer about only having an hour to fulfill the online pick up orders. She was complaining about not having enough time and that management didn't understand. While I had heard enough of hearing the complaining, I did feel for this gal. I've seen her before and she's a hard worker. It made me wonder why Chelsey couldn't have been pitching in. Checkout was fine as always. Rob in the meat department is more than helpful, always. I called the following day to ask who the manager of the store was since they are changed so often. Rebecca answered and to my surprise, I was told it was Sara. I then asked who Sara's supervisor was or for the district managers name. Rebecca became rude, would not give me the name, wanted to know why, and who I was. I'm a paying customer for over 24 years Rebecca. That's who I am. She then asked if I wanted to speak to Sara, put me on hold for 10 minutes and transferred me directly to Sara's voicemail. Well, I'm gonna give you one star because you are there and you are offering groceries. But that is the bare minimum. 99% of the time your deli is never open. Your produce looks like it should be donated to the local farmers wilted, and going by or on the other hand your avocados are as hard as a rock and they may take up to two weeks to even ripen. What's up with that? i've got to give it to you for having a fully stocked bunch of garbage that just has no nutritional value always stocked on the shelves way to go. When you get to the checkout, it's usually about 6 to 8 people deep with only one or two registers open. And it's usually some very young high school students that could give a rats ass about being there always asking do I need help with bagging my groceries? No, I need you to do your job and bag my groceries. I don't ask you to do my job there may be a couple of good, but they're certainly over 50 and they know the meaning of doing the job right. I got to say Henry is your biggest asset. What a nice person always has a smile and always working very hard. Today the checkout boy did not greet me no eye contact shoved my stuff down to the end asking me if I had a bag like my stuff was shit on a shovel. He didn't even want to touch it. I don't get it maybe Shaws you don't care about your employees do as long as you've got warm bodies in there I don't get it. Well you'll probably not even read this corporate, but you should and you should care cause I'll tell you right down the road Hannaford knows exactly, how to do it right? I live in this town and I'd much rather shop where I live but I will because it makes me so frustrated every single time I go in there. I do see that they're doing quite a business on online shopping, maybe that's where all your people are. read more

Very low inventory. Produce typically is all bruised and or rotten. Store is organized very poorly and they have a couple very rude employees. Unfortunately it's the local option. I try to not go there more than once every 3-4 months. It's the worst store on so many levels. read more

I live 1 mile from this store. Fantastic in every way except ..... About a year ago, they stopped selling the bread I've been using for many years. **Country Kitchen 12 grain bread** So why ??? Now I have to drive 10 miles to Hannafords in Middlebury to buy it. They still sell Country Kitchen at Shaws, but have eliminated the best one. Please bring it back ... Thank You. read more

The store has a variety of merchandise. The banana bread is always stale. The package showed it was packed on the same day of purchase, but the bread is hard compared to other Shaws. This has happened more than once. read more

Not to take away from Sarah's glowing review which was basically saying how much more awesome VT is than Philly (fair enough!) but when compared to other grocery options, Shaws in general and maybe this Shaws in particular ranks near the bottom. I love the people, no complaint there. Good souls going good work. But there is a unseen menace in this store referred to as "Corporate." Today after being unable to find Artichokes, sushi rice, pad Thai, or hair detangler, I tried to check out with Apple Pay, which I successfully did at this location last night. Today the word from Corporate is that the cashiers have to check your Apple Pay transaction against the last four digits of your card. Clearly someone at Corporate doesn't understand Apple Pay. When they attempt to match the last four digits it doesn't match, and the transaction is denied. This is because Apple Pay doesn't give out your credit card number. By design. For security. They give out a one-time transactional ID that authorizes the transaction. This way if Shaws gets hacked my card number isn't in their database. Cool. Shaws corporate doesn't get it. As for the items I couldn't find, I have been told before that this small town grocery doesn't fit Corporate's model of a store that needs to carry such unique items as sushi rice because, I guess, rural Vermonters don't make sushi. What corporate doesn't know is these choices drive people like me to shop in Middlebury for the Hannafords and Coop, and in Burlington to Trader Joes and W... Uh...Healthy Living. This Shaws is in need of a full overhaul. Lets start with produce or lack of. The selection is nonexistent. The avocados are either rock hard or should have been pulled off the floor. I've had them squish in my hand. Next take a look at the organic section , oh wait it's so small I almost missed it all together. Deli pass I've seen how they handle things. Bakery baguettes are usually so hard on the ends I pass on those too. Meat check the date. Learned that the hard way. Dairy same problem. Oh and what about the missing door. That cant be good. Now lets talk check out. 99% of the time I have to bag my own things, that is not how its done at the other in Shaws Middlebury always bags. Get it together Shaws don't we matter in Vergennes. read more

On day two of my epic Vermont getaway, my grocery trip to Shaw's in Vergennes was yet another vote for "I want to sell my house in Philly and move to Vermont where everyone is so friendly and earnest and happy and healthy and helpful all of the time and everything is so cheap and awesome and I want to live in Vermont!!!" Realistically - this place is a pretty straightforward grocery store with nothing crazy or remarkable about it. My high rating comes from the fact that I couldn't identify ANY shopping negatives in the place. The produce was all in good shape. The deli counter was well-organized with speedy service and high quality VT cheeses and meats. The meat and seafood selections were solidly above average for a small-town grocery store. They had a bangin' beer selection with many local brews, and a reasonable selection of wines too. Also - the prices were great. We got two cases of (good) beer, plus 3 days worth of (really good - like steaks and shellfish, really good) breakfasts, lunches, dinners and fancy treats for four people for $180. The cashiers (and even the other shoppers) were SO nice even in the middle of a busy Saturday morning. Contrasted with some of center city Philly's grocery stores, I felt like I had slipped through some sort of halcyon rabbit hole to a more pleasant shopping time. So, yeah - I really love Vermont to the point that I was excited to Yelp about going to the grocery store there. read more

It's a small town place. Most of the employees are nice and willing to help and even go the extra mile, others couldn't care less about you. The variety leaves a bit to be desired, but it's a small place. read more

Had a very positive experience shopping there this morning. The guys in the meat dept were more than willing to cut up marrow bones for my dogs, the ladies at the checkout were sharing tips for healthy snacks. I had stopped in to look for a couple of sale items, was happy to get the bones and pleasant conversation thrown in as well. read more
