This is a story of a place being just a little bit over hyped…read more I drive past Fishertown Country Store a lot too. Then one day my mother-in-law sends me out there for milk, a bag of ice, and some cookies. For some reason on that day I decide to check out the Yelp reviews in the parking lot before I go in to do my shopping. And that's when I read about DJ M's experience with the stuffed hash browns. Stuffed hash browns?!?! Well, I simply have to have them. The only problem was that it was the afternoon, and they were all out. I was told that I'd have to come by some morning if I wanted hash browns. Bummer. It's typically challenging to get out the door in the morning when the family descends upon the farm. Literally years pass by, with visions of the stuffed hash browns taunting my fat tooth. For one reason or another, the stars never aligned. But this week I finally claimed my prize. Not only that, but the kind lady behind the counter fried me up an order of stuffed hash browns on the spot. I guess sometimes they sit around in the hot food display box for a while. Perhaps my imagination got away from me. I was expecting something a bit more homemade. Instead, it was a brick of food service frozen goodness, dropped into the deep frier. I'll return to check out the apple dumpling, but I won't hold out hope that they are the best in the world. And I'll remain thankful that this reasonably good market is closer to the farm than the trek to Bedford or Johnstown.

I have really been missing out and I know as sure as I am sitting here typing this that I will stop in on my way to or from my home town again and again. My home town, Johnstown, Pa. Is known for their submarine sandwiches, referred to more often as a sub. Living and traveling all over the country I have now come to the conclusion that the only place to get a submarine sandwich is in my home town, but seeing this store is only twenty minutes away and close to the turnpike, I believed them when they had "Best subs in town" posted outside. Nada, their subs are like anyone else's "subs" in this country, six inches long and on a soft roll, where a Johnstown sub is on an 18-24 inch long crusty loaf of bread, layered with meats and cheeses, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, hot peppers, if you like and drizzled with an herb infused oil. However, all was certainly not lost, this country store is wonderful! Rows of very inexpensive fresh produce, aisles of locally made jams, noodles, canned goods, snacks and specialty items. Homemade baked goods, including gobs, a nice sized deli with incredible prices, fresh butchered meats and poultry as well as a frozen food section. They have really neat hot or cold food items ready to go like breakfast burritos, chicken salads, well many different salads and desserts, but have you ever had a stuffed hash brown? Seriously folks these are to die for and when I asked what was in them half the store's customers and most of the employees turned to me with oohs and awes telling me how good they were. Oh my gosh, they were stuffed with gooey cheese, browned sausage and onions and I got the last one, yay! I also got a small thinly sliced and lean tavern ham and Swiss cheese sandwich for my drive home, which was very good along with some pickled eggs for hubby and I'll eat the beets. They will make you a "sub" just like Subway or any other place makes them ( I call these hoagies ). I had a cooler in my car, bought a bunch of stuff and a bag of ice and saved lots of money. Oh and the gallon jugs of Galliker's ice tea that I was loving in Johnstown and buying at the Honey Bear two for five bucks were four for five bucks here, so I grabbed four more gallons. The folks are very friendly, everyone seemed to know each other by name. A nice sized laundromat is attached to the building and the place is clean, a little worn, but with the years of traffic they have received it adds character.

Especially in a place like Schellsburg. Dollar General is popping up every and any where you can think. I can appreciate that, as now they are living up to their name. They are making themselves the general store in an area where you might have to travel a good distance to pick up just a few items. However, on the other hand I feel like it could stifle local mom and pop shops that might be trying to make it in just an area. When I walked in I kind of knew exactly where to look. As a lot of these that are being thrown up are almost exactly the same. Did a quick lap around the store and honestly did not find a single thing I needed. As with almost every Dollar General out there, they are always in stocking mode. That means a lot of their product is just sitting on packed carts throughout the store. Doesn't help when what you need is not on the shelf.
