My nightmare began on June 29, 2019 at approximately 10:30pm. I was arrested and accused by Dallas Police Department officers in my home of the crime of "Assault Causing Bodily Injury Family Violence" against my spouse. I explained to the DPD officers that my spouse was experiencing symptoms of a mental disorder diagnosis he has, and that I was the one who called for an ambulance for help. I showed them my call log with the 911 dispatcher but all that was in vain. I was told by the officers that because he had laceration marks on his arms that were bleeding they believed he had not sustained them by himself. And besides, they said, "...in calls like this someone will have to get arrested". My spouse insisted on my behalf that I had not caused him harm but DPD ignored his statements and I was arrested. I was handcuffed and escorted out of my home, feeling humiliated at seeing my neighbors gaping in my direction and at the number of police cars that had been dispatched. Like, really, were 6 police cars necessary? I was in disbelief. I was sat in the back of one of the police cars for over 45 minutes while they stood around talking to each other, as if they had done something very important. They hadn't. I was taken and booked-in as an inmate in the hell known as Lew Sterrett, Dallas county's jail. The stench of disgusting mystery meat bologna sandwiches fed to inmates I gag when I remember it. And so after sitting for 10 hours on the blue steel benches on the women's side, I was finally arraigned and fortunately was able to bond out. A condition of my bond was to have absolutely NO contact whatsoever with the "victim". This meant I could not go home or stay in the home I share with my spouse. I was beside myself trying to figure out what I was going to do. I lived in a motel until it was unreasonable and not affordable to do so, and fortunately a sibling accommodated me and allowed me to live with her and her family. At work on my lunch breaks and any spare time I had when I was off, I used to call and submit online forms to various law firms. I spoke with so many different attorney firms, did a lot of repeating my situation what I was arrested for and the circumstances. 15 attorney consultations later trying to find someone who cared about my case, I was starting to feel discouraged that I could not find the legal representation I needed. On 7/3/19 I submitted an online inquiry form on the website of the firm of Shawn Storey PLLC. I got an email from Mr. Shawn Storey on 7/5/19 expressing interest in representing me and from that day I began to have hope about my case. Folks, Mr. Storey obtained a case DISMISSED disposition without my case even being filed and charged by the district attorney. He texted me from court to let me know on 8/28/19 that the case was dismissed and I cried happy tears. Not once during this ordeal did I have to appear in court because he is competent and a good communicator and he knows the law and how to navigate its rules. The legal justice system could have adversely complicated my life but because of his representation, that did not happen. Today, my spouse and I are happy our nightmare is over because of Mr. Storey's assistance. I am immensely relieved and grateful for all he did and I recommend him wholeheartedly and with no reservations. He was able to move my case from August to February of 2024 so I didn't miss my daughter's Sr. year as Captain of her school drill/dance team. I had DWI's & Theft cases prior and had been to prison. I am allowed to consume my medical MARIJUANA in Dallas County while on Felony Probation in Dallas County. Shawn made history with me, I am the first person in that felony court that has been approved to use my medical marijuana.
