While making my way through Granada, and after visiting the Alhambra... I was really in the mood for a nice traditional shawarma. Well, it just so happens that there is a good plenty of places to visit, close to La Plaza de Cuchilleros. I saw this one in particular., the Shawarma King.. and how could I pass it by. The place is very traditional, inside and outside. The decor is authentic, and gives you a middle eastern feel. Which is exactly what we were looking for. The food however.. was just ok. Probably better for dinner, but the lunch specials are just ok. I had a classic wrap, with fries and a drink. It was more like a burrito, than the traditional shawarma wrap I'm used to. So good I went back and second time in one day. BEST falafel I've ever had! You get so much food for cheap. There's just walk up service with two outside tables but you can get your food to go or "dine in" at one of those tables but the employees were very nice and patient with us attempting and failing to order in Spanish. read more

Shawarma...the word conjures up mouthwatering images of giant pieces of perfectly seasoned, juicy, and succulent meats slowly spinning and roasting. After a full week in Spain, I needed a brief break from Spanish food. I ordered the cheapest thing on the menu: Kebab Clasico for a mere €3. This wrap was filled was tasty chicken shawarma mixed with fresh vegetables,spices, and a creamy yogurt sauce...delicious and filling! There are -many other tasty things on the menu, even burgers for your boring non-foodie travel mates. My first meal after a full panic attack. I wandered in and ordered the falafel pita. The man behind the counter placed all the ingredients in the pita and MIXED them throughly and then put it on the stove to give it that crispy finish. I practically drooled in the counter. There's an entire menu dedicated to tea Don't miss out on the opportunity to drink freshly brewed tea. When I mean fresh, I'm talking the man behind the counter was actually ripping tea leaves off of a branch to put into the kettle. We were floored by the rich flavors in the house special "Alandalucia" (con leche) and the Green Tea with Mint. The first one was a complex blend of spices that were perfectly balanced out by the sweetness of the milk. The mint in the Green Tea was sharp and so refreshing. We paired our tea with some baklava which was a little more solid than what we're used to, but the hot tea melted it down in our mouths. Highly recommend the combo! The service was amazing. Even though we came in at 1 at night, the owner greeted us with a smile and a "salaam". He made everything for us fresh, didn't charge us for the baklava, didn't become frustrated with the language barrier, and even offered us a glass cup to take home our leftover tea in. This place was good! I came with several companions, some just to drink, others of us to eat. The inside has a cool Moorish aesthetic, which works for the town that boasts the Alhambra. We walked upstairs and seated ourselves. There were some food scraps and napkins on the floor around our table -ew- but we got comfy on the couch and chairs and looked at the menus we picked up downstairs. This place is all halal, so no alcohol, but they do offer some alcohol-free wine and beer. That being said, there is a very extensive menu of teas, juices, and smoothies. Most of us got the minty limeade which was super refreshing. We wanted a small, quick bite, so three of us all got the Taj Halal schwarma with its amazing spicy chicken, yummy sauce, and crunchy lettuce. It doesn't come with any fries or a drink, but for €4, it's a steal. The waitstaff was very friendly but not very expeditious (our waiter went on break before checking on us, but we were able to pay at the counter downstairs); choose carefully if you have a time crunch. If you want a break from the typical Spanish food and want to enjoy something authentic to the Muslim Quarter, this place will do nicely. Food is great and prices are very fair. I've been to Granada twice, and both times I ended up back at the Shawarma King (or it's sister restaurant across the street -- El Taj Halal). If you're looking for Moroccan food, this is the place to go. While they do offer a variety of cuisines (like delicious chicken tikka masala), the Moroccan food is far better than what I've found at restaurants in the Albaicin quarter. The portions are large and reasonably priced and the food is flavorful and authentic. I recommend the Taj Halal Shawarma (watch out, it's very spicy), split pea soup, and Fish Tajin. Hummus is also fresh and well-seasoned. While the food was great, it's the baklava that really took the cake. This stuff was borderline addictive. They're all made in-house and with honey (not sugar syrup). Don't miss out on them! read more

After a long morning of touring the Alhambra, we stopped by Shawarma King for a quick lunch, and while the value of this fast food joint wasn't bad, I wasn't quite impressed with the quality of their ingredients. I started with the Greek salad, which came with wilted iceberg lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, olives, feta, and shredded carrots. I also tried the combo kebab platter, which came with more salad, rice, chicken & beef shwarma, and a dollop of yogurt sauce. While tasty, the meat was a bit on the salty/greasy side, but the rice was decently spiced. Lastly, I got the falafel pita, which was definitely my favorite thing here! The thin pita wrap fully enclosed the falafel balls, along with veggies and yogurt sauce. The falafel weren't crispy at all and simply fell apart, but the herbed chickpea mixture was amazingly fragrant, tasty, and didn't feel greasy--this might be the thing worth getting if you come, and at just 3 Euros, it's an absolute steal! read more

This place was very close to our hotel so we gave it a go for lunch. It has the moorish aesthetic and is overall attractive. I've always heard good things about harira, a Moroccan soup, so we ordered it and it was absolutely delicious! My husband had a shawarma, it was okay. My second visit to granada this summer and still a big fan of this place. Very beautiful moroccon interiors and decoration. We had kebab and the very traditional muslim food cous cous here. Arabic tea is very refreshing. Very good place to relax and eat. I love this place for hukka or sheeshah as you want to say. At a very cheap price of 9 euros we had apple flavour sheesah. The service is also very good and the person is generous. True taste of moroccon food can be found here. Still a fan!! read more

We ate here twice during our stay in Granada. The first time was just by chance as we were on a public bus after touring the Alhambra. Decided to just go here on the fly. Staff is kind, although has a lot of tables to attend to inside, outside and upstairs, so customers need to be patient. It's worth the wait. We really enjoyed the Mint Limonade, Pakistani tea, pita w/hummus and the Shawarma/wraps. They have really made a great effort to decorate the upstairs as a Moorish palace with couches, stools and ornate wooden tables. Background music is nice. Locals definitely like to relax here with a pot of tea! read more

Shawarma King's selection of teas are to die for! I ordered Baobdil tea and it was the best tea I ever had, period. It was perfectly brewed with a strong flavor and it was beautifully sweetened with a variety of exotic fruits. You could see the fruits at the bottom of the tea pot. I couldn't get enough of it. Oh yeah, had the best chicken shawarma too! I drove to Granada from Madrid and I reached there around mid night. I was super hungry and I stumbled upon this place as it was walkable from my hotel. There were a few men smoking hookah inside the place. Even though they looked harmless, I felt a bit nervous. But the owner of the place was sweet and friendly, I felt safe. The prices were reasonable too. Their credit card machine was broken that day and I had to gather all my spare change to pay the bill. It was a bit frustrating. There was one waitress we got on our second visit who didn't speak English and didn't really make an effort to try to understand the Spanglish we spoke.. If you are going to have kebab in Granada (which, why wouldn't you??) you must go Shawarma King! Not only is the ambiance amazing with cool Moroccan tapestries and cushions, but the service is incredible. We became regulars here and our waiters were so kind. One in particular is out of control hilarious and always chats us up. Oh and the food is yummy and a great price. It might be a little more expensive than other kebab shops but you also get free hookah if you spend more than ten euros so its a great way to pass an evening with some friends, hookah and good food. read more

Good food, very nice atmosphere. We like that they have goldfish in two aquariums, but there are too many fish for the size of aquariums that they have. The health of the fish appears to be suffering. In one tank several of the fish are sitting on the bottom. There should only be two or three fish in each aquarium. The absolute worst "restaurant" in Granada. I ordered the chicken skewers with bread. The chicken came but the bread never did. Imagine eating chicken kabab with no bread! We repeatedly asked our waiter (a guy with a mullet that was a poor homage to Davy Crockett's cap) to bring the bread. Nothing happened. Eventually, we gave up and paid our bill. Was not bad for my first time here, I have been to gyro places in the United States, but figured I would try it here. I got dry but they were kind of cold by the time I got them and there wasn't any salt on them. Still good though. I also got a chicken wrap which was good but had too much lettuce and not enough sauce, the chicken was kind of hard.
