I've been here a handful of times - always on my way to or from somewhere else - year I've always wanted to spend more time here after discovering some of the local goodies. For starters, everyone should stopover at the magnificent piece of architecture that is the Sundial Bridge, the neighboring arboritum, and the Turtle Bay nature preserve. The downtown has plenty to explore as well, including countless small shops and restaurants in a very walkable environment. Lastly, it's within an hour of piety of natural splendor, including multiple lakes, rivers, Lassen National Park and lake and Mt. Shasta. Like any reasonably sized city, there are some downsides. Get in the wrong part of town and you will find some crime and more drug use than some other cities of its size. Take the mostly good with the little bad and you have a new place to visit! I'd recommend Redding to anyone looking for a foothold on exploring the northern part of our state.

Redding has plenty of outdoor activities from hiking to fishing to kayaking... not to mention within a 30 mile radius of Redding are more than 600 square miles of State and National Parks and Forests open to public access. You'd be complying with social distancing! Redding is known as the "Trails Capital of California" unfortunately, I'm not an avid hiker. I live through hiking photos from seasoned hikers, Elmer and Shayla. I do enjoy sightseeing and beautiful scenery so we do "some" hiking. Redding experiences over 300 days of sunshine, Redding is the 2nd sunniest city in the U.S and last week we came to spend a weekend here. It was 108° degrees, humid, then the following day thunderstorm! Forbes Magazine named Redding a "Top 10 Fishing Town in North America." The Sacramento River runs clear and cold right through the heart of Redding and is California's longest river beginning near Mt. Shasta and flowing into the San Francisco Bay. All of Redding's drinking water comes from the Sacramento River. Redding is home to the Cascade Theatre which opened Friday, August 9, 1935. It's got some historic background behind it and, supposedly, it's haunted! Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 it remains temporarily closed. Under Governor Newsom's plan, venues like the Cascade Theatre will not be able to reopen until stage four. Damn this pandemic! Lastly, we saw for the first time The Sundial Bridge. The bridge is pretty famous and is a California icon and one of the largest working sundials in the world. It is a pedestrian bridge over the Sacramento River in the heart of Redding. Beautiful bridge. Saw it in the daytime and nighttime. Redding is not exempt from wildfires. In July 28, 2018 the city experienced one of the California's large wildfire that burned in Shasta and Trinity Counties -- The Carr Fire. This was big news in Northern California. The fire burned 229,651 acres destroying many homes and structures and, sadly, deaths. I found it ironic that the Carr Fire was caused by a car... yup, the fire started when a flat tire on a car caused the wheel's rim to scrape against the asphalt, creating sparks that set off the fire. So sad. We have not experienced a good dine-in restaurant in Redding because of the pandemic. I'm not fond of takeout too much. Once in a while I like to be served inside a nice restaurant. Beautiful caverns with lots of history about how they were found and even some original paths in and ladders from founder. The light show at the end was fun. Worth the history, boat and bus ride up. Plus, Elsie, a boat from WWII Normandy sits in the harbor and is still used to boat stuff around and even has old bullet wounds to show. Reasonably priced adult ticket is $47.84 and can be purchased online or at the cute little gift shop. This is for at least 2 hours and if your a smaller group, lots of 1 on 1 with your guide for questions answered and they are very knowledgeable.

You can also purchase tickets from the gift shop. The entire trip was smooth and super fun. It started with a ferry ride to the other side of the lake. There was a bus waiting for us. We loaded the bus, drove up to the caves, and met our guide. We met Jenna, tour guide, and began our tour. She was funny and very informative throughout the entire tour. The caves were fantastic to see. BEWARE: there are lots of stairs in the caves that you must climb and descend. There were loads of rock formations to see in the caves. The lighting system made it easier to each one. I especially liked the light show at the end.

I ASSUMED it was because they wanted to do right by me and provide me with food since the JITB employee was such a d***. They had me sit in what I can only assume was the reservation waiting area but I was surrounded by people who looked like they don't even eat food. I waited and waited and was finally taken to my own private dining room. I waited there for HOURS only to be served with what amounted to a generic brand lunchable. When I complained to the uniformed server he was very very mean to me. This restaurant is HORRIBLY designed because they put a metal toilet in the same room where they serve you your meal. Luckily I didn't have to pay a dime because they made me hand over everything in my pockets earlier on. -1/10 WILL NOT BE PATRONIZING THIS ESTABLISHMENT AGAIN!

I know the dept is short staffed for the needs of the city but they consistently exceed expectations. Chief Barner is a dynamic leader and works well with, and has the respect of, his officers and the community. The K9 units are worth their weight in gold and I am a big fan of them. My only recommendation is that the City Council allocate more resources for more officers.

This skinny officer tells me there's no such thing as a fix it ticket being all cocky. I told him well that's not what I was told by the officer on the motorcycle. I handed him my original ticket along with a letter I received in the mail from the court. Then told him I need to pay it. He was cocky which made him look like a fool because I was right and he was wrong. So I get to the counter to pay my $25 ticket and I asked the clerk about my ticket. Guess what YES it was a fix it ticket and it's at the discretion of the office who gave it to me. So Mr. Cocky officer who stands behind the convaer belt upon enter you were WRONG..and your attitude needs to be adjusted because your not all that. The other officers standing around were very nice but the skinny guy with the mustache he needs his attitude checked before going to work. NEWSFLASH YOU WERE WRONG AND I WAS RIGHT.. Within these walls ethical misconduct runs rapid like water, ruled by actors with a love for money, power, and popularity. Of course there is a handful of people whom to trust, who are not deceptive and possess integrity with pure motives. These humans work endlessly to serve clients compassionately and appropriately. If you must have dealings here, actively pursue the few rare gems for services, assistance and hire.
