In short, if you want the best, go to Dr. Oyakawa. He and his staff are all excellent. I chose Dr. Oyakawa to do my Lasik procedure about 25 years ago. As a dentist my vision is critical so I thoroughly researched him and found that he truly is the best in Southern California. I have since had cataract surgery and new lens placed by Dr. Oyakawa and I now see better than I have since he did my Lasik. In addition he is a retinal specialist should I ever need that help. My vision is too important to me to trust to anyone else. read more

Dr. Oyakawa at Sharper Vision Center performed my cataract surgery 4 years ago, and I am so thankful for the good vision I now have without contact lenses or glasses. Dr. Oyakawa cares about his patients and carefully listens to any concerns I have about my eye health. I appreciate that Dr. Oyakawa is using the latest technology to monitor the health of his patients' eyes. There is no need to have my eyes dilated during my regular exams since Nydia, the technical assistant, takes photos of my retinas. The photos give vital information about my eye health, which Dr. Oyakawa then explains to me in detail. This means a lot to me. Dr. Oyakawa and his wonderful staff always make my visits a pleasant experience. read more

This review is long overdue. I got my lasik surgery done with Dr. Ray T. Oyakawa back in 2006. I remembered thinking about getting it done for about 5 years prior. After my surgery....my only regret is not getting it done sooner. Dr. Oyakawa is an ophthalmic surgeon who's been in the practice for almost 30 years. He did lasik surgeries for 3 of my co-workers which was how I got him as a recommendation. At that time I was wearing contact lenses and my eyes were getting infections constantly. I was so tired of it and to top it off, my vision was getting worse each year (I'm near sighted thanks to my Dad's genes). I also had a slight astigmatism on my right eye. I initially met up with Dr. Oyakawa for a consultation and set up for surgery at Cedars Sinai. As with any surgery, I was extremely scared (especially on the day of). The staff at Cedars Sinai made sure I was comfortable and also gave me a teddy bear to hold on to, lol. The actual surgery was done in a snap. I mean each eye took about a minute and before I knew it...I was good to go. It took a few days for my eyes to get adjusted and I had to wear special glasses. But after about a week....20/20 vision baby! No more contact lenses! No more astigmatism! No more eye infections! And I can SEE! It's been 6 years already and my eyes are still 20/20. I still get my annual checkup to make sure everything is functioning correctly. But I never regret getting this done. I highly recommend Dr. Oyakawa. read more

I'm old. At least that is what my regular Optometrist would tell me when I inquired about Lasik. It was too late for me, according to her. My vision was getting progressively worse and I wanted a second opinion. I researched and found one of the best Lasik Surgeons in the South Bay. Dr. Ray Oyakawa. After getting a free consultation, he felt that Lasik would benefit me and that he could help. Yes, I am older than one should be when getting the surgery, but my eyes were healthy and should heal well. I asked to have my farsightedness fixed. I wanted to be able to drive and shop without glasses. I am now 2 months post surgery. I easily see when driving, and I can also use the computer without glasses. BONUS! Both my far and near vision AND Astigmatism was repaired. It was worth every penny and then some. Now, I use "off the shelf", 150 power reading glasses to avoid eye strain and see small print. Dr Oyakawa and his staff have been amazing and taken great care of me. I can't thank them enough. read more

I'd been going to a long-time friend up in the West side for my eye care, but with so many family members going here, I finally gave up my 1 hour drive, and am so VERY happy! From the staff who did my initial eye exam for glasses, and to Dr Oyakawa who did a very thorough eye exam, I'm very happy with his professionalism and care. Everyone in my family who has been *seeing* Dr Oyakawa for years and years only had the best things to say about him, and now I know why. He's very caring, thorough, and explains in detail what he's doing, and how your eyes are. read more

I hadn't been to an opthamologist in a few years and wanted to get a check up because it seemed like my eyes were slowly being covered by a dark cloud. A co-worker of mine recommended I see her family opthamologist of many years...Dr. Oyakawa. Thank goodness for that. Shortly after my examination, I was shown evidence of cataracts in both my eyes (I was only 49 years old at the time - year 2015 - and I would have never guessed I had cataracts). Anyhow, I told my co-worker and found out that she also had cataracts at a younger than most cases age and said her Crystlens lenses inserted by Dr. Oyakawa worked out very well (she didn't even need to wear glasses anymore). I'm glad I took her and Dr. Oyakawa's advice and went with the Crystlens lenses - they were right. Dr. Oyakawa is a wonderful opthamologist/surgeon with top notch office staff. I was nervous about the surgery, but Dr. O let me know exactly what to expect in regards to the surgery and follow up procedures - and he was spot on. My surgery went off without a hitch and I continued to see Dr. O on a regular basis for check- ups until I moved out of state about five years later. Anyhow, I think the world of Dr. O and his skills. I highly recommend him to anyone that is looking for optimal eye care services. Tracy B. read more

Ive been a patient of Dr. Oyakawa for about 20 years. When I decided to do cataract lens replacement I found that Dr. Oyakawa was the preeminent Dr. for Crystlens. The replacement was miraculous and my new sight was amazing. Dr. Oyakawa perfectly explained the lens replacement procedure and the advantages of Crystlens. Dr. Oyakawa is the most knowledgeable Doctor I've ever met. I referred him to a friend, my brother and his wife. They were all very pleased with Doctor Oyakawa's excellent service. read more

I had a retinal tear on a Saturday and went to the emergency room. I was as seen by a hospital ophthalmologist but there was too much blood in my eye to fully access the damage. The hospital contacted Dr. Oyakawa at 10pm and he agreed to see me the next day which was a Sunday! He was very pleasant with me and very professional. he found two retinal tears and promptly used cryotherapy to fuse the two retinal tears. I saw him again twice after this and am very pleased with the care I have received. read more

Dr. Oyakawa has been my eye doctor for 33 years!! This man has saved my vision over the years and is absolutely amazing. When I was 27 I was losing vision and my health plan couldn't find a doctor within my plan on a Friday evening, so I was sent to a specialist. That night Dr. Oyakawa performed cutting edge surgery on my left eye, which saved my vision. In my 40's, I lost vision when a dentist damaged my optic nerve. At UCLA, I was told by a reputable doctor there that there was nothing he could do to help my vision. Dr. Oyakawa performed surgery and I am able to use that eye effectively. A week ago, Dr. Oyakawa performed cataract surgery and placed a new lens in my right eye. Everything went great and I can see clearly once again. I absolutely, 100%, advise anyone who needs to see an eye doctor to go see Dr. Oyakawa. He is the BEST doctor I have seen in my lifetime. There are no long waits, the office is incredibly efficient, and they are knowledgeable and kind. read more

I filed complaint to the medical board about Dr. Oyakawa recently, however it was over 8 years after Dr. Oyakawa gross neglegence. over the statue of limitation. The board has to close the case but Dr. Oyakawa did lie to me numerous times regarding redo the surgery. I had very bad experience with Dr. Oyakawa's cataract surgery and follow-up treatments. He was incompetent, greedy and irresponsible for his surgery. 1. After the initial cataract surgery was done unsuccessfully, Dr. Oyakawa continuously misled me that I could not replace the Crystalens, caused me to lose the opportunity to correct my vision within the first year of surgery. 2. Dr. Oyakawa charged extraordinarily high fee for simple cataract surgery. He persuaded me to use Crystalens which was very expensive and had no promising results on patient had Lasik surgery in the past. 3. Dr. Oyakawa also charged me for post-op visits due to his incompetence in both cataract and Yag Laser surgeries. 4. In most my follow-up visits, Dr. Oyakawa always claimed my unsatisfactory cataract surgery was due to my prior Lasik procedure, caused him could not calculate my focus correctly. Regarding this viewpoint, I discussed with a friend who had Lasik many years ago, and she also did cataract surgery around the same time of my cataract surgery. Her ophthalmologist told her not to use multifocal lens because it is hard to determine the focus of vision (same reason as Dr. Oyakawa claimed). Her doctor recommended using single focal lens and adjust one eye aim for far distance and one eye aim for near distance, so she doesn't need to wear any glasses and she is happy with the results. It seems to be a widely known fact that Crystalens (multifocal lens) is not suitable for Lasik patients around 2013, however, Dr. Oyakawa still recommended me to get Crystalens, because he got award of Excellence of Crystalens, he sold Crystalens to patients no matter it's suitable or not to benefit himself regardless of patients' best interests and wellbeing. read more

He missed floating debris in my eye that I could see in the mirror. I even asked about those specks and he brushed off my question, with "they are in your eyes". I repeated the question and he repeated those same 5 words. I sort of knew that much, which is why I went to an eye doctor. He fixated on another long term (15 years) issue I had and ignored the retinal detachment that just started. I even specified my symptoms on the medical forms before the exam. Not until I was at the front desk on my way out, and I asked again in front of others did he recognize my concern. He said "it is good that we caught this" and put me back in the exam chair. Diagnosis was retinal detachment. I left his empty office for another doctor who listened to my questions and exhibited technical competence. read more

He has the worst manager and staff I have ever been subjected to. Yet, Dr. Oyakawa thinks they "walk on water". They dilated my eyes and I sat in the waiting room for almost 45 min until I finally asked when I would be seen not knowing when the effects of the drops might start wearing off. Ann, the office manager, rudely told me they wouldI get to me when they can and if I can't wait, they would schedule me another appointment! Dr Oyakawa could not find the meds I take in his computer and asks me why I didn't give it to them. When I filled out the med forms, I clipped my list of meds to the clipboard but the staff failed to take a copy of it. He argued with me that I never gave it to them! He tells me they would never make a mistake like faiing to input my meds. It is my fault and maybe I should look for another opthalmologist! Today I had an appointment with my nephrologist in the same building and as I was going to my car after my appointment with him, another gentleman was walking in front of me. He fell off the curb and fell face first onto the concrete floor. I ran to put my hand under his head, His dark glasses were cracked, he had a gash on his forehead and cuts and bruises on his face. Another man called 911 and I asked him what doctor he had come to see. He was a patient of Dr Oyakawa. He was 87 years old and he drove all the way from Culver City. He said his eyes were dilated and he didn;t see the curb. What doctors office would allow him to leave to drive home in that condition! This is how caring, observant, and professional this horrible office is! While I sat there waiting for over 45 minutes, Ann, was on a social call gabbing away to some friend and never checked on me. Obviously, she doesn't observe much and is too busy to care. read more

I truly believe that Dr. Ray Oyakawa is a good Dr. - he knows his stuff. However, his staff are rude, inconsiderate, inattentive to the patients needs before their own office chatter and more over do a lousy job. For Example, my daughter came there for an eye exam she needed for work. They knew this ahead of time since we had phone the day before. After the exam, she needed her work form completed and the staff were put off by it and told us, they couldn't not complete it since we didn't give it to them at the start of the exam for they had other patients. We didn't know we had to give to them the form at the start of the exam as we were not instructed to and my daughter had it in her hand the whole time she was being examined. They knew ahead of time that my daughter was there for a work related exam which required a form to be completed and signed by the doctor. Mind you. it was a one pager with only a small section to be completed. We still had plenty of our 1 hour appt time but they just did not want to do it. What happens at this place is that the staff are always going on about their personal life. The Dr. often joins in and jokes with his staff which is so unprofessional. Upon us checking in, a competent staff would have asked, "Do you have any forms that need to be completed for your job?" But no, they are too busy carrying on about this that and the other no work related. Back to our story, when I tried to complaint to the Dr. he came to the defense of the staff which is when I said, I will never come back here. He lost three patients that day, my son, my daughter and myself. My daughter had left school, missed a class and was press for time for she had to get back to school which was at least an hour drive away. They didn't care. There used to be long waits when I first starting going there, but since not so long perhaps other are choosing not to go there anymore as well I still think the Dr. is a good Dr. but his along with his staff's unprofessionalism and rude service is a deterrent. read more
