My first stay at The Retreat was in 2009 when it was under the care of MD Donald Ross. He has now…read moreretired, and is moving to Texas. The turn over since then (I have been multiple times since the lack of "quality" treatment in my area) is astonishing. I am also someone who works in the field and continues to go for a higher education in clinical counseling psychology. I have a diagnosis of AXIS I PTSD and AXIS II Bipolar 1 Disorder. When I was brought this time to the retreat my family was told, by admissions, they were able to handle and treat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I believed them, because the Retreat has a Co-Occurring with addiction Unit, which the "gateway drug" to addiction is trauma. I was under the impression the Unit and the staff would be and qualified with Trauma Informed Care, at least the nursing staff. By my fourth day, and my second flash back, I could see this was not the case, holding this certification myself. There was a fire drill, I was huddle in a ball trying to ground myself from the noise and crowd of people and a nurse grabbed me with out asking, sending me into a downward spiral and flashback which they could not control. When I brought this up to one of the leadership committee Psychiatrist group members , in group. He said this is something I will bring to rounds. After talking to new nurses and older nurses I had found out no one was qualified to deal with trauma or any kind of true trauma emergency. My last night there I pushed the emergency button, since I again, had another flash back. I stayed grounded enough to know a nurse did not come to me until they could find the only nurse to deal with a trauma situation, because she was trained years ago, when Donald Ross MD was there. It was minutes. I also had upsetting situations with the food. My stomach was upset, having just tried to overdose, and I asked for grilled cheese. I took 4 hours then a nutrionist knocked on my door asking why I wasn't eating and gave me a yogurt, She soon was able to give me a grilled cheese. The next day the cook told me "I had to buy my own bread and cheese and make it myself because they don't do special orders" for the amount of money you pay, you think you can get a grilled cheese when sick. Lastly (negative) psychodynamic groups are sad. Dr kuskca (sorry for the spelling) sits there saying nothing using silence as a tool. I was told multiple times while there that I am a better counselor than the doctors working there. There is also a new Dr, who keeps answering every question himself and doesn't turn it back to the group, which you learn in undergraduate group 101 not to do. Peer to peer learning and support is was more valuable then hearing him and his ideas. Multiple staff also agreed this doctor was not a good fit to run groups but was afraid to say anything themselves, so the clients were paying the price. If you go even after all this, ask for Dr Larooo (from south africa) He is a thinker and a listener. He will give you advice and tell you truth from the heart which is rare from a doctor. Also, alway go to teresa f? tall with dark hair. She has been there a LONG time and knows her stuff. She will take time with you, and her heart and soul is in this job. she will love you until you can love yourself

I left The Retreat about two months ago. To sum up my experience: retraumatization. Whether it was…read morenurses entering my bathroom while i was showering; the nurse manager Beth acting like the Queen of Sheba; or another resident making sexual comments at me, pacing outside my room, verbally accosting me, and the head Dr, Dr. Young pulling me aside saying that i should feel safe on the ward and this fellow resident wasn't a threat. When i got home, my team of doctors (all of whom have a lot of experience ~running~ Yale psychiatrists) were horrified to hear of my experiences, and even more horrified when they heard my supposed diagnosis and saw the laundry list of meds i had been put on. Do not go here.

He takes the time to stay current with the latest research, and it shows in the thoughtful, evidence-based approach he brings to treatment. When I was going through one of the most difficult times in my life, I felt that I could trust him completely. He not only provided excellent care, but also gave me genuine hope that things could improve, and they have. I also feel very comfortable being open and honest with him, which has made a big difference in my treatment.

He was the doctor at Kolmac Outpatient when I was there almost 5 yrs ago due to medical negligence…read more Long story short I ended up here because a doctor told me to go to detox to get off Klonopin that I had been taking as prescribed for 16 yrs. Negro loves to prescribe Phenobarbital, a barbiturate. Was put on a really high dose the first day I was there! Not sure why we didn't question this. They said it was for withdrawal and even offered Suboxene! I said no. Had all the signs of Akathisia. Tried to tell them I was having Benzo Withdrawal and they didn't listen to me. I was diagnosed with "rebound anxiety" and told I needed a psych hospital day program for "anxiety". They then rapidly taper you off within the few weeks you spend there. They eventually slowed down the taper when they saw I was getting worse. You can, I suppose, replace Klonopin with Phenobarbital but it's a rather barbaric way to "get people off Benzos". Was ignored and misdiagnosed by Negro and the other staff members. I still have Akathisia. See my reviews for Kolmac.

Both the drug therapy regimen and the talk therapy have had a positive impact on my son's condition, and, although not "cured", both his depression and anger issues are largely in check, and his reactions to stressful 'triggers' are less frequent and less severe. We've both learned an awful lot about the illnesses my son has to deal with, and are very appreciative of both this information and the road map Jeff has provided us to work towards our ultimate goals. Jeff has also given me a assistance with some relation problems I was experiencing, much to my relief. I honestly would not have been able to navigate these issues alone, and am grateful my son and I met Jeff when we did. Thanks, Doc.

Absolutely AWFUL. At best incompetent, quite possibly dangerous. He is currently facing…read moredisciplinary charges with the state LCSW board because he was purchasing opiate drugs from a client! I saw Jeff for a few months more than a year ago, and I am still find myself disturbed by his behavior in sessions. I came to see him after a significant traumatic experience, when my own judgment was not great. He frequently engaged in bizarre trains of logic, interrupted me with bizarre and disturbing questions, forced me to repeatedly recount intimate details of the traumatic experience(!), and when I confronted him he was condescending, cruel, and tried to convince me I was out of my mind. He never informed me of my rights as a patient and repeatedly tried to form bonds beyond the normal boundaries of therapy. This felt strange at the time, but I now know that this is actually a serious offense in his field, called forming a "dual relationship." Now that I know he has a habit of using his clients as drug connections, I feel that I dodged a bullet in quitting when I did. BE CAREFUL AROUND THIS MAN.
