We have read in online forums that fish folk from Nanaimo to Victoria make the trek to Island Pet Zone in order to tap into Scott's expertise. We traveled to a variety of stores from Nanaimo to Victoria when we first got into fish and this (lucky us) is by far the best all around place we found. A good pet store that does not sell live anything other than fish and well worth the time to shop there.

Out of nowhere, he became violently sick--vomiting, shaking, passing bloody diarrhea, and collapsing into lethargy. We rushed him to WAVES Emergency in Victoria, where he was diagnosed with Acute Hemorrhagic Diarrhea Syndrome (AHDS). The vet made it clear: his raw diet was the likely cause, and we were told to stop it immediately. We've now spent over $1,000 in emergency care--and if he relapses, we've been warned a vet stay will cost us $3,500+. Bruno is slowly improving on a prescription diet and medication, but this has been horrifying. What makes this worse is Buddies' complete lack of transparency. Their website offers zero warnings about serious health risks linked to raw feeding--no mention of AHDS, bacterial overload, or that raw food can transmit bacteria to humans, especially children. Our vet told us all of this--why doesn't Buddies? After digging through reviews, I found I'm not alone--other customers have had serious issues too, including foreign material in the food and poor responses from the company. I'll be warning everyone I know. Raw food isn't inherently evil--but this company's silence about its risks is. Do better, Buddies.

Aside from the catnip mats, FHPS also carries these very sturdy, adorable orca dog stuffies in two sizes. These make the most perfect gifts and have held up well to my dog's chomping and tossing. Totally unexpectedly, they also carry a vegan dog food I'd been wanting my pup to try and it wasn't unreasonably priced! Their pet food selection is extensive and high quality and they have rows of both dry and canned dog and cat foods. I also recommend their locally made dog treats up by the cash register. My dog is a big fan of the squash and beet varieties. Employees are helpful, the store is clean, and parking is decent.

The aisles are tight, so it's hard to get through if others are standing around. Also, the no pet policy is ironic since it is a pet store. That's like going into a baby store and you're not allowed to bring a baby inside. What's also ridiculous is that every other shop in the area has a sign saying dogs are welcome inside the shop. You know it's silly when even the coffee shop allows dogs.
