I had a scar along my forehead that Dr. Josephitis was able to cover very nicely. Matt, who I believe is one of the contacts for out of state patients, was super helpful the entire time leading up to the actual day of the procedure. He acted as a middle man between the doctor and I, and was able to answer any questions I had. The front desk staff were incredibly friendly the day I arrived for surgery. After I checked in, Dr. Joesephitis met with me to confirm the plan. He was very friendly, professional, and had great bedside manner. Once I was taken back into the procedure room, all of the techs, or nurses, introduced themselves. The room itself was relaxing and saturated in large windows, so it didn't feel cold and lifeless like some medical offices do. Jersey did my numbing and I actually didn't feel anything, other than a few small stings in the beginning. While she did that, Miko (I apologize if I forget her name, since I was pretty out of it at that point from the Valium) used a massager on my back to trick my nerves from feeling too much pain from the anesthetic. From there, Dr. Joe came in and decided exactly how to cover my scar. Then, the techs/nurses placed everything. The entire process took about 6-7 hours. I was asleep about 90% of the time. I give my highest recommendations to Dr. Josephitis (Dr. Joe) and the team at Shapiro Medical Group (SMG). I am a repair patient and have had many procedures over the years. During my review, I would like to address some factors that I think are necessary to achieve a good result. First, start taking finasteride and minoxidil as soon as you notice your hair thinning. These are effective in slowing down hair loss and promoting hair growth. SMG also offers Exosome shots that promote hair growth. I have seen good improvement after getting Exosome shots. Second, your donor hair is limited. SMG is conservative with their approach knowing that the patient will have more hair thinning as they get older. They consider the future hair loss of each patient knowing that the donor hair for each patient is limited. They also safely determine the area where the grafts can be safely taken out. Third, the graft angle is extremely important. Other Hair Transplant Doctors I went too inserted the grafts at the incorrect angles for the hairline and over the top of my scalp which produced an unnatural result. I still have grafts where the hairs stand straight up. The hairs should lay down, not stand straight up. I had a hair lift and multiple FUT & FUE sessions earlier in life that left me with a wide scar, shock loss, and an unnatural look. I thought that I was out of donor area, so I stopped getting FUE sessions. After I retired, I was on the SMG website and noticed that they now performed FUE and work with beard hairs. Their team is well regarded and highly respected in the hair loss community, so I went in for a consultation with Dr. Joe and Matt Zupan. Dr. Joe told me that I still had at least 1,000 hair grafts he could use as well as beard hairs. I chose to have some of the beard hairs placed into my scar. Dr. Joe placed 360 beard grafts in my scar and the results were excellent. My scar is now undetectable. I had further sessions of beard grafts over the top of my scalp also. I am very satisfied with the results. The beard hairs make for great fillers and break up the balding areas. They should not be used for the hairline. A year later, I had a 1,100 FUE session with most of my remaining donor hairs for the front area and Dr. Joe did a great job. My hairline looks fantastic and so does the frontal 1/3 area. The grafts were all placed at the proper angles. I had another session where I had 1,017 hair and beard grafts placed in the back of my scalp where the shock loss was. The growth was excellent, and the back of my head looks the best it has in 25 years. SMG offers a procedure called Scalp Micro Pigmentation (SMP). This works great for patients who want a shaved head or patients that have at least 20 grafts/cm2. I have roughly 25 grafts/cm2, my hair is thin, and my donor area is almost depleted, so this was a great option for me. After my sessions with Nicole, it looks like I have the appearance of someone who has 45 grafts/cm2. In addition, the SMP was able to make my scalp look good after I got out of the shower. I have severe shock loss in my scalp from a botched hair transplant and this made my scalp look grotesque on the sides and in the back when I got out of the shower. I no longer have to worry about my hair when it rains or when I get out of the shower because of SMP. SMG only works on one patient at a time. Dr. Joe is very skilled, caring and compassionate. He takes his time and answers all questions. He does make recommendations based on his experience which is appreciated. All in all, I am super IMPRESSED by the professionalism at SMG. SMG spent many hours over the phone with me and answered all my questions. I emailed Ron Shapiro directly and Matt Zupan (Patient Educator) was always there to ensure I had all my concerns addressed. The front office staff, Matt Zupan (Patient Educator), and everyone involved wanted to make sure that I had the best care. They did not care about making money or getting the "sales" as they wanted what was honestly best for me. SMG was the only clinic out of the 5 places I contacted who actually walked me through the concept of donor supply, how to look at the future for when my hair loss progresses and what I can do to prevent more hair loss (medication, exercise, etc.) They have a concept to not blow your entire "wad" with a mega session and see how the first procedure goes to ensure you can make revisions later on and assess where you are. I had a great experience with Shapiro Medical for my hair transplant in 2018. Outlining my experience below: 1) After 6 months of research into other clinics, I scheduled a consultation call with Matt Zupan. We had several calls in which we went over my current hair situation, desired results, pros and cons and any other considerations. He never pressured me to have a procedure. In fact, he even suggested I take more time to see how I responded to medication. This meant a lot to me. 2) When I decided I wanted to have a procedure, he worked hard to squeeze me into their very busy schedule. He also took into account that I was young and had a very tight budget. 3) The day before the surgery, I met with Dr Jo for about an hour. We went over the desired hairline based on my graft density. He prepped me for what to expect the next day and answered any questions that I had (I had a lot). 4) The morning of the surgery, I asked Dr Jo another series of questions, the ladies at the front desk ordered me lunch, and the nurses prepped me for surgery (huge shoutout to those unsung heroes). It's been about six years since I got my transplant. I'm a "diffuse" thinner and the HT was mostly for the front half of my head, and the hairline. Now, I'm not getting ready to have another one to fill in my crown area. I cannot tell you how pleased I am with the results of my procedure. It was a lot of money for me at the time, but was absolutely worth the investment, hands-down. When I tell people that I've had a HT they're usually in awe because the results are so natural. Dr. Paul (Shapiro) was my doctor and he was so kind, knowledgeable, and just all around easy to work with. Spend five minutes with the guy and you'll understand why SMG has such a great reputation! Over the past six years I've occasionally needed to check in with both Dr. Paul and Matt (Zupan) with questions, medication concerns, etc., and they've always been willing to spend time talking with me. I received my hair transplant in March of 2018. I have always loved my hair and the different hair styles I have adopted over the years. I have had two procedures with SMG and both have exceeded my expectations. The first was done when I was 27, second at 35. I have a very strong family history of MPB. As with many young men, my main concern was my hairline. For reference, before I had my first HT with SMG I had receded temples and thinning hairline. About a NW 2.5. My goals were to improve my hairline and ensure a natural result. I knew going in that no one beats SMG with concern to a natural result. I had done years of research on all the old hair loss forums (the now defunct hairlosshelp and still going strong hairlosstalk) and the overwhelming consensus was and still is that SMG is the best at achieving a natural result. This I found out firsthand as I had about 2100 FUE grafts at the hairline and temple regions. After around 12 months post op it was clear that it 1) achieved the natural result I was looking for and 2) improved my hairline to the point where it looked like it did in my early 20s. About 8 years after this first HT I did one more as my non transplanted hair began to thin in spite of being on Dutasteride since 2008. At about 5.5 months post op I can already consider it a success even though I have about 7 more months of growth to look forward to. I want to stress too that before my first HT Dr. Paul was cognizant about my age and did not over do it. I think a lot of young men go to clinics and get their HTs overdone and have unrealistic expectations that the doctors do not discuss with their patients. In a few years when their non transplanted hair begins to thin things can look very off. SMG takes this into consideration so you will always achieve a natural result. I had 2200 grafts (front, mid-top nearly 18 years ago at this clinic. Work was great, staff was knowledgable, competent, and as others noted Dr Ron harvested the donor strip, made the initial incisions, and inspected regularly as his technicians inserted the grafts. I've got fine/blond hair, and they did such a natural job that no one ever suspected. In fact, I had a local physician remove the closure staples, and he didn't notice the new hair, but was just curious what the incision was for. Very clean work I'm due for a "tune-up" now. The top-back has continued to go thin to balding, and the front hairline that included my pre-procedure hair, is mostly gone now. But because I've got all that permanent hair that was moved it still works, using Toppik. I'll likely go in again in the next year to give me some more in the the front hairline, temples, and the top mid-scalp, and Shapiro is where I'll return. The key to this is "natural." The goal is to have a cosmetically attractive hairline that frames your face, and naturally thins in areas that match the "improved" normal aging process. Shapiro clinic understands that, and doesn't attempt to give a 60 year old man, a 16 year old man's hairline. I have had two hair transplant surgeries with Dr Paul Shapiro and I could not be more pleased. Over the two surgeries I had 6,7000 Folliular Unit Grafts transplanted. Dr Paul accomplished a great job covering the first 1/2 of my scalp using almost 4,000 grafts in the first surgery. In the second surgery he focused on my crown. The surgeries look completely natural and covers my head with a good density. When I tell people I had a hair transplant they cannot believe me because the work is so undetectable. The scar is barely noticeable. I can cut my hair with a # 3 blade in back and no one notices it at all. The best part of the surgery is that it makes me look a lot younger. I am ten months out from my FUE procedure and am floored by the progress. I went and got my hair cut last night and it made me laugh to think about how I wanted my hair "done." I don't just cut my own hair with a clippers anymore. An FUE is interesting because it takes time to fill in (there's probably still some happening for me), so you don't think about it every day. Then one day it hits you how much more hair you have (for me it was my first round of before-after pictures). I'd liken a bald spot to having a hole in the drywall. It's the only thing you see on the wall until it's fixed, then you completely forget it was there. I was worried people would say "why do you have more hair now?" It rarely comes up. Some are probably too polite, but with friends who are close enough to say something I'm not even sure how much they notice. The "hole in the drywall" is just going away. You don't think much about a person having hair unless they're bald...any more than you think about a wall not having a hole in it. Dr. Josephitis did my procedure. He is a really kind, cool guy. Just about a year after my hair transplant and I could not be happier. Dr. Ron Shapiro is considered one of the best in the world and that's why I chose him. He was able to transplant a tad bit under 2500 hairs. The results are really fantastic. 2500 transplanted hairs on a mostly bald scalp is not a lot and so I was amazed at how skilled he was at giving me a nice hairline and a fairly full looking head of hair. I have enough transplant hairs available for a second transplant, but honestly this transplant stands on it's own and so I won't need a second procedure. Additionally, the scar from the harvest area is not at all noticeable and so I'm able to get my hair cut short without the scar being seen. Dr. Ron Shapiro is also an exceptionally nice person. He made me feel relaxed and comfortable. For those who are considering a hair transplant I would highly recommend using this doctor. Consider that you only have a limited number of hairs that can be harvested, so you want to make sure it's done right the first time. Also consider the fact that this is surgery - a decent size swath of hair is cut out from the back and side of your head in order to harvest the transplant hairs. I had my transplant a few years ago - they totally screwed it up. Dr. Shapiro or one of his workers - I didn't see the Dr doing any actual transplanting at all. I was semi-knocked out on valium, but I was aware enough to know Shapiro just came and went from the room. Anyways, they put way too much hair on the sides of my head without blending it into the thinning area of the recession - so if I cut the sides of my hair short like the current barbered trend, I have a thick chunk of hair on each side with a semi-bald spot behind it. I mean, it looks so obvious it's a cut and past job my barber always laughs at it. And guys, it was like this from day one - I cut my hair short one year after the transplant and it was very obvious it was a cut and paste job. I went back to the complain but the used car salesguy they have selling the services just basically told me to put some makeup on the area or pay thousands more to fix their problem. I was shocked. I recently had Dr. Ron Shapiro (and his team) perform hair transplant surgery for me; the experience was great! I first spoke with Matt Z, he clearly explained the types of transplants that exist, the process, pricing and more. After deciding to move forward, he also assisted me in setting up the appointment. As an out of state resident, I traveled to Minneapolis the day before the surgery - I was at their office at 7:30am the day of my surgery and left ~6:30pm. The procedure itself started ~8:15am. It was a relatively painless procedure; you can feel the first two shots, but the pain is very minimal. And the recovery was relatively immediate (I simply took one pain pill when I got home, then rested for a few days in Minneapolis before returning home). Unfortunately, they do have to give you a "haircut" and you can see where the hairs were planted so it'll take a few weeks before I go out in public without wearing a hat or hoodie. I underwent FUT surgery on the 20th of July 2010 with Ron Shapiro and almost 5 years on I don't regret it at all. The team were really friendly and helpful, Matt helped me through everything in the lead up to the surgery and I had a discussion with Ron the day before. The growth that I experienced afterwards was well beyond my expectations. For me it meant a big change in self confidence (no more hats - awesome) and I got a number of comments about how different I looked. I don't know what the hair transplant market is like now, but back then I can remember looking around and seeing that SMG were the best (in terms of consistent feedback and reviews) and yet most affordable team on the market. I figured that if I was going to have to wear something for the rest of my life I didn't want someone to mess it up and decided to make the long trip there (from Christchurch, NZ). I remember appreciating just how well the team looked after me and how much time and effort they took to explain the process to me. I do have a scar at the back of my head but it isn't noticeable as long as I don't shave it too close (i.e. not closer than a No. 4). I had a hair transplant procedure with Dr. Paul Shapiro. My results are like a doll head and much of the side hair above ears is patchwork like with big gaps between the overly thick transplanted hair and natural hair - it looks very obvious that I have transplants. I don't think Dr. Shapiro actually does the transplants - I came to from oral sedation numerous times and other people were placing the transplants. And don't get me started on the sales consultant Matt Zupan - he's like a used cars salesman - slimey and gross. read more

High recommend this place. They have the sweetest staff. To the man at the front desk, the consult, nurses and doctors. Dr. Josephitis did my procedure and the nurses. They were constantly making sure I was doing okay. They even crushed my pills because I have a hard time swallowing large ones. Dr. Josephitis was great at describing the procedure, answering questions and making sure I got what I wanted. Not only did they do all of this but my mom came with me and they gave her a room to watch movies, brought her blankets, coffee and lunch. Can not say enough how great this place is. read more

I've been a patient of Shapiro Medical for 10 years. I've had 3 transplants in that time span and consider myself very lucky for finding them. I started receding in my late teens and into my mid 20's and decided I wanted to change the look of my hair as well as how I felt daily. Hair is part of your identity and is not easy to lose when you're younger (or at any age). After each treatment, I was so excited for the hair to grow in, and as it did my confidence grew with it. I was also surprised how good they are in hiding the donor scar, which I thought for sure would be a difficult task to do, but they pulled it off every time. Now that I'm in my 30s, I still have a great looking head of hair with barely any recession. My name is Jay and i have had surgery with Dr Ron and Dr Paul Shapiro, i travelled over 4000 miles to have my procedures at Shapiro Medical Group and am thrilled with the results from both doctors. During my first visit i arrived at the clinic and Dr Shapiro greeted me with a handshake and welcomed me to his clinic, straight away all my fears disappeared because the guy was one of the most kind, warm hearted gentleman I've ever had the pleasure to meet he really took onboard my hair loss concerns and was very passionate about helping. Firstly he checked my donor, laxity and recipient site and we discussed the options and for about an hour. He's extremely thorough and answered all my questions and concerns and really took onboard what I was saying. It was obvious the man had my best interests at heart, there was no pressure or rushing to get me into the chair, he wanted to get the plan of attack just right before we started. After a plan was made i went to the procedure room and the staff greeted me warmly, I felt like a vip and couldn't have been more comfortable, the techs were friendly and made me feel comfortable. Dr's Ron and Paul Shapiro must have had the nicest work force I've eve come across my whole life. I was then told to put on a medical gown ready for the procedure, whilst doing this their consultant Matt Zupan came in, he introduced himself to me, what a nice guy he was, he seemed genuine, caring and very likeable just like the other staff members. I was placed in a chair rather like a dentists chair and was given my aneasthetic using an extraordinary vibrating machine that was placed on my forehead to numb my scalp. I never felt any pain whatsoever, just the odd scratch like feeling now and again, but this was normal and was nothing at all to worry about. I can honestly say hand on heart that the aneasthetic wasn't as bad as that administered at a dentist, im soft so if it hurt id be the first to complain. I was then placed face down on the chair with my chin on a head rest so the strip could be removed. This was painless and to be honest I almost fell asleep as I was comfortable lying there and had had little sleep the night before due to needless worry. After the strip was removed the techs starting the cutting while I was being sutured up. Dr Shapiro managed to get rid of most of my poor previous scar which came courtesy of another Transplant clinic in my home town, i was thrilled and felt a little emotional, to be honest I almost started to cry soft sod I am lol. He then started to make the incisions for my new hair with Janna counting everyone out loud so we knew just how many there was. When about 90% of the incisions were made, they used a dye on my recipient area for them to see the incisions better. They saved around 10% of the grafts to be used for fine tuning at the end. Janna and the other techs then started to plant with Dr Shapiro checking all the time he was very thorough and hardly ever away whilst they were doing this. They planted in a rotation so that each tech didn't become too tired. It was obvious that they had all been there working together for a lot of years as they were like a well oiled machine working in tune with each other it was very impressive. During the surgery I was given valium to help me relax and offered a choice of DVDs to watch on a TV in front of me, the whole experience was very relaxing. I can honestly say though that throughout I didn't feel one bit of pain, and I was told that if I did to tell them so they could administer more aneasthetic. The whole thing lasted from 8.00 am until around 5.00pm with a break in the middle for lunch. Throughout the surgery I was offered drinks periodically which was a nice gesture as you can imagine sat in a chair that long you become restless and a nice drink every now and again alleviated that . When most of the grafts were placed Dr S and Janna began to fine tune the hairline with the last lot of grafts and they really took there time over this to ensure it was just right and as planned from the beginning. After the surgery was finished one off the techs went through all the post operative instructions and gave me a bag with pain killers and some gauze cloths, graftcyte spray and antibiotic cream he was very thorough with the instructions and made sure I understood which was good. I was then given something to eat and drink before I said goodbye to everyone and thanked Dr Shapiro for all the work he had done , Janna then asked if I was happy with the results and im not ashamed to admit that even though I'm a man off 34yrs old it brought tears to my eyes when I looked in the mirror. It's been over nine years since I had my transplant surgery. I have to say that this has been the best money I've ever spent on myself. In my opinion having a great hair and great teeth will always make you look 10 years younger. On the day of my surgery, I went in, sat down, got sedated, watched some movies, woke up, had lunch ,went back to sleep and then woke up and it was all complete. The only discomfort I felt was itching around the donor area days after the surgery was done. I wasn't going to wait until people started referring to me as a bald guy to get this done. I've always told my buddies, the sooner you go in and get this handled the better. Dr. Ron and Dr. Paul and Matt and everybody I've ever come in contact with on their staff have always been really great to work with and its nice to run into them when I am out and about. Yes I paid thousands for the surgery and yes I continue with rogaine at night. But I'm 51 and I have more hair on my head than most guys I know within 15 years under my age.
