This place should get ZERO stars. Came in for a simple glaucoma check. Left annoyed and unable to see for hours. They let you drive home with dilated eyes which should be highly illegal. They never even tell you to bring glasses to the appointment. The tech was extremely rude basically hates her job and it shows. Even backing up to check in the lady with the northeast accent is abrupt and rude. At the end she said ONE YEAR....um what? I said I won't be coming back. The tech didn't offer a mirror to remove my contacts, when I asked why she had to touch my eye vs. why they don't use the air puff she rudely said: BECAUSE WE DON'T. I hated my experience here and DO NOT RECOMMEND. Ridiculous. The doctor didn't explain anything she was doing. DO NOT COME HERE. read more

Highly recommend Shane Retina - personally wouldn't trust anyone more than them to work on my eyes. I had sudden vision change and it turned out to be a torn retina! All of the staff was extremely kind, professional and knowledgeable. Dr. Shane explained what the issue was clearly and expertly tended to the tear. To have them proactively work with my insurance company to sort it was covered was icing on the cake. read more

I was referred to Dr. Shane from my doctor in another state as I am one of the "snow birds" who spends extensive time in Florida. Getting an appointment went well. The doctor did call my phone number the day before my appointment to see if I had any questions. Since I was seeing him the next day I did not call him back. A morning appointment with no long wait. I saw 2 assistants first. One dilated my eyes, gave me an eye exam and did the photograph of the eye needing follow up treatment from cataract surgery in 2024. To digress for a second, I would advise a person with cataract problems to delay having the surgery as long as possible. After surgery complications are common. Back to Dr. Shane. I explained to the second assistant that I had been on unsuccessful eye drop therapy for my one of my eyes since May 2024. Every time I went off the drops, inflammation in the eye would return. Weaning off the drops seemed a non scientific method with mixed results. I was on a 3 drop a day routine with 2 drops a day to be the recommendation of my out of state doctor to again start the weaning process. I advised the second assistant of what eye drops I had been using and the point about the inflammtion coming back each time I stopped. Dr. Shane then came in. He apparently had been briefed by the second assistant. He immediately began to advise my that he wanted me to go on another eyedrop bromfenac, which is a non steroid eyedrop. He felt using that type of eyedrop along with the steroid eyedrop I was on would help wean me off the othery eyedrop. He then mentioned they would give me a coupon to help with the cost of the drug which apparently would not be covered by my insurance. I think I spent less than 5 minutes with Dr. Shane. When I checked out I was not given the coupon as I was told and also was told that I didn't have to pay for the office visit. That was incorrect as someone called me after I had driven away saying I needed to make a payment and come back for the coupon. But I had just received a text message with info for the coupon. Also, my insurance sent me an estimate that it would cost $9. Later I received a text that my insurance had denied the prescription due to lack of information from the doctor. My thought was maybe the insurance company didn't have all of my records related to the eye issue. I contacted both my prior eye doctors offices involved and requested they send all the info to Dr. Shane's office. The prescription company informed me they had sent 6 requestes to Shane's office for more infomation regarding the need for the prescribed new eyedrop but had never been given any information. I received at least 3 phone calls from an assistant from Dr. Shane's office to come and get the coupon! I tried to explain to them that I did not want to use a coupon and pay 5 times for a new eyedrop than what I had paid for prior eyedrops. Apparently there was a communication problem between the prescription company and the doctors office regarding getting the full medical records regarding my eye issue. I called Dr. Shane's office in an attempt to explain to him my concerns. The only response I received was once again from the assistant to tell me that the prescription company did not approve the prescription. Absent a discussion with Dr. Shane himself, I then cancelled my upcoming appointment. If a doctor will not talk to me the patient, the one going through the medical issue, I will not allow such a doctor to treat me. Patients do have rights and should not blindly follow the advice of doctors. The fact that the eyedrop being prescribed was not considered by 2 previous doctors I had gone to also raised a red flag in my mind. Are there not best practices that all eye doctors follow. just returned from Dr. Shane's office and had a very very bad experience which I need to share. About a year ago Dr. Shane operated on my eye because I had a detached retina. When the same symptoms happened this week I called Dr. Shane's office yesterday to make an appointment as soon as possible and they said they had an appointment available the next day, which is today. When I got there, they asked me if I had the same insurance company when I said yes, they said they no longer except my insurance company and that the doctor could not see me Unless I paid $175 on the spot, which I certainly did not have and cannot afford. They told me they left me a voicemail to tell me about the situation which they never did and I never did get a voicemail from them. They should've told me when I made the appointment that they no longer accepted my insurance. We went back-and-forth for at least a half an hour, and they refused to have the doctor to see me even for a consult. I am now sitting here with what may be a detached retina and believe me they couldn't see me just because of the money. I would not suggest anybody go to that office. I only wish I could personally call Dr. Shane and tell him what happened because I'm sure he would not agree with what came down. Dr. Shane is great! He actually called me before my appointment to see if I had any questions, which I did. I saw flashes of light in my left eye and was afraid my retina was detaching. (That's what I get for Googling!!) He reassured me it was only an ocular migraine. I was so relieved I cried! read more

While dealing with some serious eye issues, I was told to see a retinal specialist. I found Retina Care Consultants while driving past their offices on Tamiami Trail. They were able to get me an appointment just a few days after my call. The staff were very friendly and helpful throughout my testing and examination. I was highly impressed with Dr Shane on all levels. He was extremely thorough and took his time to explain each aspect of the examination. What stood out for me the most was his ability to take very technical information and make it easily understandable to the average person. He did not rush through the examination and made sure that I fully understood what he had told me. All in all, a tremendous experience. They were polite and very professional. I didn't wait long and was seen at my appointed time. This is the best high quality eye care I have found in Sarasota and Bradenton. I have used two others that were very poor but as soon as you walk in here, you are treated with respect. I seen Dr. Brugger and my wife seen Dr. Shane. Both were the best. The staff that assists are just as wonderful. Incredibly great staff all around. They confirmed what was in my eyes after cataract surgery for both eyes at a different clinic just down the road from them that treated me rudely and claimed I was making it up. Their equipment is top notch and their exams are very thorough. If you want respect, courtesy, efficient staff, you can't go wrong visiting the Retina Care Consultants.
