Very clean restrooms. There is some trash on the ground. However, not all people are slobs. Happy we stopped there. It was really weird seeing a hardwired phone. It is convenient for those who do NOT have a cell phone. The doggy areas are pretty well explained. However, some people forgot reading skills behind the steering wheel when they departed their car.

Super clean rest stop. Nice covered picnic areas. They also have vending machines. The bathrooms are really clean. They also have options for single bathroom users only. They also have a electric vehicle charging station. Just hope it's not a flex alert time. OK that was a little poke at the electric vehicle owners. Sorry. Haha

The Shandon Rest Area is a bit more than half way from the I-5 (roughly 35 miles) to Paso Robles (another 19 miles). Plenty of parking for families, big rigs, RVs, trailers, etc. Other than one of the stalls in the women's restroom, the entire place was clean and not trashed out like other rest stops I've seen... If you're traveling with dogs, this is a great place to let them stretch out for a bit, but beware of rattlers and other critters. Several picnic tables are available. Some information boards to glance at... Vending machines are also available. I'm still so intrigued by the ice cream vending machine. Perfect for hot days like when we were there (9/21/15). Clean restrooms.

Clean restrooms, lots of parking and off the 46 between Paso Robles and the 5 freeway. Also a cool breeze...

Great half way point between Paso Robles and the San Joaquin valley for travelers. We travel with a 5th wheel and it has nice big area for trailers so we were happy campers, no pun intended. When we stopped at noon on a Sunday the restrooms were clean. Actually it is a nice clean rest area I've seen a lot worse. It's a rest area there's really not much more to say.

On our way to Monterey, we stopped here for a rest. This location had plenty of bathrooms for men, women, and unisex ones for those who require assistance. They also had vending machines with soft drinks of almost every kind, in bottles and cans, bottled waters (starting at only $1), coffee, coffee beverages, snacks and even ice cream. Sure, its not cheap to get snacks, but its here for convenience. Some of the machines even take Visa./ MC! While using the women's room, I noticed the stalls were out of toilet paper. I spotted 2 workers in yellow vests, and they were maintenance people for that location. I told them about the TP issue, and they fixed it. Very clean, they even have a dog area, and ample parking for the big vehicles too.

What if the rattlesnake IS my pet?

The Shandon Rest Area is a great little stop on the 46 between Paso Robles and Lost Hills; I've been stopping here for years when I head West from Bakersfield to the coast. The restrooms are usually clean and well stocked with toilet paper and soap. The ladies room boasts two hand dryers and good water pressure in sink. Just outside the restrooms there are two payphones (who even knew they existed anymore) and vending machines well stocked with soda, candy, and chips. Venturing farther afoot, there are several benches, three picnic tables, one large shady tree, and plenty of room to stretch your legs. For those of our friends with either more than 2 legs or less than 2 legs, there is a designated pet exercise area. For those puzzled as to why I included our friends with less than 2 legs check out the picture of the signpost I included which has two signs, one designating it a pet exercise area and the other warning of the possible presence of rattlesnakes (who I assume are somebody's exotic pets?) Bonus - there is a geocache hidden somewhere on the property. We found it one night on a late night run back from SLO. If you know what that means, try your hand at it next time you're passing through!

    For the budding rest-stop naturalist.

The truth is, we only stopped here to find the geocache. But then...it was SO PRETTY, that we felt compelled to pee here, too...to show our appreciation. This is one SWANK rest area. I guess when you're in wine country, everything gets a little fancier. Apparently this facility was rebuilt only a few years ago, and it still has that new-bathroom feel to it. The restrooms are large and clean, the picnic area looks like a place you might actually choose to picnic, and the vending machines border on gourmet. OK...not really, but when your brain is set to rest-stop standards, they are really nice! Add to all of this extremely informative informational placards, and you might actually be fooled into thinking you stopped at some sort of area visitor center rather than a place to pee! Also, the CHP has what looks to be some sort of private break room here, and their presence probably keeps things relatively safe around here. Highly recommended stop! Even if you don't need to pee...stop for a coffee and ice cream!

The world's most interesting vending machine! Get an It's It....you'll be glad you did.

I've stopped at a lot of rest stops in my life. This one was not the 7th circle of hell I was expecting. It's clean. The bathrooms are clean. There is soap. There is shade. There is not dog poop everywhere. You actually feel better after you stop, and don't crave a cleansing shower. Be sure to visit the ice cream vending machine. It is the most fascinatingly strange vending machine I have ever seen. It sort of looks like The Claw. And you need a little ice cream and happy entertainment after visiting the nearby James Dean memorial, right?

Very clean rest area and restrooms. Water fountains were also well maintained. Vending machines accepted credit cards and was cheap for a bottle of water ($1.50 each) They also have a pet area

A nice rest stop on the highway. Clean and well needed driving the distances. Quite a few family toilet and diaper changing facilities

Disgusting yellow/orange water in toilet and to wash your hands. Not sure if it was rust or what. It looked like recycled vomit.

I have used other road side showers along I-5 (Joe's Travel Center for example) and that is the place to go. They are far apart in distance so hopefully I find something in between. To be blunt this is a last resort option. You better have your own soap, shampoo and towels to bring inside. Water temperature warm enough. I would never return in the current condition.

There's a Arco/AMPM and Dairy Queen. The Bathrooms are clean for a gas station and the staff is friendly and helpful too. The gas prices are also better than the other surrounding gas stations in this area. Parking is ample if you're stopping to order some food get travel information. Etc... There are well over 20+ gas pumps, so even though it's busy the wait for a pump is minimal. I can't speak on how good the Dairy Queen is as it wasn't opening time yet. It is really convenient if you're hungry. Overall, if I'm traveling down I-5 and have to make a pit stop Lost Hills will definitely be one on my list of Truck/Rest stops.
