Shalene helped my family buy our first home last Autumn here in Oakland. I knew her already as a friendly neighbor that worked in real estate, so when we decided to buy, I looked up her reviews and they were all describing exactly what I was looking for. We did a remote video call to figure out our needs, and ask any questions and went from there. Shalene sent us homes that she thought we might be interested in, and anytime we were interested, she promptly made an appointment to view the homes. During our tours she pointed out things we should pay attention to, like furnaces that were really old, roofs that were difficult to clean, and signs there could be issues with foundations or dry rot. She was always happy to answer questions or explain intricacies of home buying. She is also a plain old really nice person. I miss her now that she isn't my neighbor anymore. We ended up looking at around 10 homes and offering on three. For the first offer, it was on a house where we got a last minute notice of a preemptive offer at 9pm that we had till 9am to counter. Shalene stayed up till 1:30AM and woke up early the next morning to make sure our offer was complete by the deadline. For our second offer there were some complexities that needed a lot of communication with contractors and the other agent and she helped with all that. For our last successful offer, she knew the seller's agent, which seemed to give the sellers confidence that we were reliable. Shalene helped us through the entire process, and even after the close of escrow. We've since gotten contractor recommendations from her and feel like she is still happy to help us. We regret hiring Shalene Rose (of Caldecott Properties) to sell our home.  Working with her amplified the stress of selling a house, and we came out of the experience feeling manipulated and taken advantage of. As one example, we discovered that Shalene, as our seller's agent, had signaled to the buyer's agent that they had the highest offer.  We were stunned to learn Shalene had done this since it undermined our ability to negotiate, and was not in our best interests as sellers.   The National Association of Realtors (NAR) site says that real estate agents have an "imperative to refrain from making disclosures that may not, in the final analysis, be in a client's interests." When we shared our experience with others, we were advised to file a charge against Shalene for unethical conduct. Please be careful when you choose a real estate agent.  There's a lot on the line--not only money but also peace of mind--and you don't want to have an experience like ours. read more

I've literally never felt this way when writing a review, but 5 stars is not nearly enough in this case; 10 would be more appropriate. Shalene and her partner, Michael, helped me sell my condo in Oakland, which had been a rental for almost 5 years. I am in NY and hadn't laid eyes on the unit all that time. Initially, an agent with the property management company I was using to manage the rental was promising me higher returns (using inappropriate, overly rosy "comps") for less money (lower commission, no need to spruce up the property for sale), but after digging in carefully and realizing that Shalene and Michael's assessment of my property appeared carefully thought out and more realistic, I decided to go with them (one of the better decisions I've made). Once they could get into the property, they found it to be pretty beat up... They arranged for new carpeting, full interior painting, all new light fixtures, and other repairs and updates, always making smart aesthetic design choices within the constraints imposed by the property (existing tile, dated kitchen) and always working hard to ensure competitive pricing. They also dealt with a whole litany of issues (private sewer lateral debacle, attempted break-in...) that you'd think would be outside the purview of a realtor's duties, but they never broke stride or seemed to regret taking on my property. The end result was that it looked more spectacular, both in person and online, than I would have thought possible for the amount of money that I had to put in up front. Despite their hard work, we still had a hard time selling it for reasons that nobody could have predicted (covid having introduced all sorts of new dynamics into the real estate market). As we had to adjust the price point several times, they carefully walked me through their reasoning each time, and I saw the virtue in their strategy. In the end, we found a great buyer, and I am 100% confident that we got the maximum price possible in the current market. I seriously cannot recommend them enough. read more

I can't give a 0 rating. Heck, I'd complain to the actual sellers if I could. We made a no-contingency offer (except to check on a couple of structural items that professionals had indicated in the disclosures), and the realtor countered us for 4.2% more. When we accepted the counter before the deadline, we were asked for more time for the sellers to decide, even after we had agreed to everything the sellers asked for. (The realtor claimed these were siblings selling and they need time to reach out to all.) Then the realtor came back many hours past the deadline to say the sellers had accepted another offer, without any explanation. Now, this property has been on the market for almost 3 weeks and I am expected to believe everything miraculously happened, all at once, where the sellers found a willing buyer bidding at the same time? Finally, many weeks later, we found out that the sellers accepted an offer that was 0.4% more than what they asked us in a counter, that had contingencies and a long-close as opposed to our no-contingency short-close offer. I don't know if it is the realty company or the realtor, but I'd stay away from any property represented by these folks. read more

Bottom line: we were first time homebuyers and she helped us close on a house that felt like the best deal on the market for our price range and in a neighborhood we wanted to live in. Shalene is not a very pushy or aggressive agent, and she always put our interests first. If she didn't think a house was a good fit for us, she'd say so. If anything she could've been slightly more aggressive. She sent us regular listings and did a great job showing and advising us on houses that I typically found online, but she rarely alerted us to specific houses that fit our profile as they came on the market. But, given how aggressively I was scanning new listings, I didn't really give her much room to do that. In any case, I would highly recommend Shalene as an agent, especially if you are willing to do some of the legwork on sifting through listings yourself (which I think is better than relying on an agent anyway). Seriously could we of found a better realtor for us? Im pretty sure we couldn't. As first time home buyers we needed schooling on all the technicalities and paper work. We worked with Shalene and Michael and they both were amazing! We had a limited budget and wanted to find something that wasn't already totally fancy and staged that we could fix up a little and get a good value on. Shalene and Michael drove us around to several different neighborhoods that we were curious about. Everything from West Oakland to the hills. They were informative and down to earth and never turned their noses up at our fixer upper ideas or lost patience with our many questions and concerns. Both Shalene and Michael were easy to get in touch with and prompt about getting back to us when we didn't reach them right away. In the end we wound up with a bank owned home that was a great deal but like pulling teeth to get through the paperwork associated with closing. Shalene and Michael were both calling and emailing the bank and listing agent along with our mortgage broker multiple times a day to get it all to happen in a timely manner.
