The last time I went to the Philippines, which was 11 years ago, I had pizza from Greenwich and was not a fan. I was venting to my dad about how the Philippines doesn't do pizza justice, so he suggested I give it another chance and to specifically try Shakey's. On my recent trip to the Philippines it was like the stars and planets were aligned as my hotel, Dusit Thani, happened to be located right across the street from Shakey's. It was less than 2 minutes walking distance.
My mom, uncle, his fiancé, and I arrived at Shakey's around 7:30pm on a Thursday. I found it to be a casual, sit-down pizza joint. It felt very Americanized and even reminded me of home. The place wasn't too busy at the time, so we had no problem with being seated and served right away. I also thought that our food came out considerably fast for pizza (~15 min), but it probably did help that Shakey's Pizza was thin crust.
I had a "solo" (side-sized) Chef's salad as my starter. I thought it was totally fine. Tasted exactly as I would expect of a Chef's salad. Furthermore, the ingredients were fresh, and lettuce was especially crisp.
For our pizza, we had half Firehouse and half Belly Buster. I had a couple of slices of the Belly Buster, and I really enjoyed them! It was like a glorified combo pizza. In addition to the great quality and flavor of the pizza, I liked that the thin crust was very crispy and held together quite well.
After my experience at Shakey's, I texted my dad to let him know that he was right. Shakey's was legit and worth the try. It was so good that I can now say I have a go-to pizza spot in the Philippines. read more
